News Waite....no longer. He's gone.

It is my view that we spent far longer down than we needed to and we have been far to slow to build, entirely because of certain players on our list not doing the absolute best to help us get up there. The tail has wagged the dog at Carlton for a decade IMO.

Not picking on Waite. He and Walker have been my two favourites. I have absolutely no doubt that if Waite had been more mature, had taken care of himself and had given 100% on the field every game, Carlton would have been a much better side over that journey. All players at Carlton wanted success, only some have been prepared to put in the work to get it. Waite wants to capitalise on the hard work of North players to this point, rather than give everything he has to get Carlton up to that point.

Robbie Flower deserved a flag. Robert Harvey deserved a flag. One club players who gave their all because they loved the club, and could easily have gone somewhere else for glory. Flower only played finals in his final year. Not all players deserve a flag I'm afraid.

I agree entirely. Through 2004-2010 we brought a lot of young, talented players to the club but failed to develop them and create an environment where they pushed themselves to succeed. It's no wonder players like Gibbs and Yarran are having breakout seasons years after they should have - things have finally clicked.

Waite's an odd cat though. He might have become the player we all envisioned him being, or he may well have continued to underachieve. It's all speculation and hyperbole. I don't think he deserves a flag either - but he's got every right to chase one with his chosen club.

But rather than see his departure as inherently dark, I'd rather see it as indicative of the direction of the club over the next decade. For every player that leaves, new players get opportunities. If we can nab Jaksch, have a fit Henderson, along with Casboult playing closer to goal we may have stumbled on a formula that might just work.

Waite is 'very selfish'. Direct quote from somebody very, very high up in the club. After what I've heard from the best source imaginable, i'm absolutely angry about JW now and hope he achieves nothing at wherever he goes.
So Terror Management... any good news?

We offered a very good deal, with a certain amount of games (achievable for Waitey mind you) for a 2nd year but he wanted guaranteed 2 year contract and was willing to leave unless he got it. Hence, the very selfish quote.

Also the source said 2016 is our year.

Waite departure disappoints McKay

Carlton’s head of football believes the Club has players ready to step up in the wake of Jarrad Waite’s exit.

Waite informed the Blues today that he plans to exercise his options under free agency. It will close the curtain on the 31-year-old’s 13-year career at Carlton.

The Blues and Waite’s management have been in discussions for some time, and until today it was unclear which way Waite was leaning.

Carlton’s GM – Football Operations Andrew McKay said he wasn’t taken by surprise when Waite told the Club of his decision this morning.

Long live the source!

On the other hand, we have role players like Matt Spangher, who fully deserves his premiership medal, after years of heartache and near-misses in premiership winning teams, but he never complained, just kept on toiling without fuss, and obeying the coaches instructions to the letter.

You are right, attitude and discipline are very important qualities.

All the best to JW.
Onwards and upwards, I guess...

I hate this part of footy.

Exactly this. Logic, reason and 13 years of observation suggests he's no great loss. But I'm sadder about his departure than I can explain. Criticism of Waite's attitude on- and off-field is well founded, no question, but to an extent, the Club shaped him as a person and leader. I suppose the good news is that the Club has looked in the mirror and realised that being better than that is non-negotiable.

Still, I hope he's the last father-son we lose to free agency for a while.

It's disappointing Waite didn't become a one club player after many years with us.

However, I'm not upset at him leaving. He's 31 and doesn't fit the age profile and direction of where we are heading. Wouldn't have been a part of #17 anyway.

Best of luck to him wherever he ends up but it's unlikely we'll have Robbo to run through him next we come up against him (if he's not in the rehab group).

Still remember one of his first ever games against Brisbane at Princes Park. Pretty sure it was the game where we were up at halftime and it was during their period of dominance. I reckon they went on to crush us in the second half but Waite's game that day on Akermanis on the wing was special. It is easy to get confused and mix games up as time moves on but it may have also been the game where his father died the night before and he played. I know people are angry at him but I will miss Waite.

That was the Melbourne game, one of the enduring memories I have of Waite is of him taking 3 bounces and slotting one from 50 that day.

Yeah thanks Stig, you are right. His first half against Akermanis that day was sublime. Had talent to burn.

I was there too. One of the only games at Princes Park I can remember because I was so young back then.

Not too much enthusiasm for JW on the Norf board. I wonder if he's headed elsewhere.
The first injury Waite gets @ his new club will not go down well. We at least were used to it and kind of had that 'defend him at all costs' mentality - his new club won't. He WAS Carlton. All part & parcel of being a footy orphan.

Was always my favourite player before MK came along, I'm gutted he's leaving. Its a pity because in any other era he would have played in a premiership and probably stared.
Good luck to you Jarrod I'm sure you'll be a welcome past player in a couple of years.
