What a bunch of thugs they all were. Those contests were so hard!
I was surprised at how quick the game was. Hawthorn and Geelong both threw themselves into it with Hawthorn being better skilled, drilled and passionate. Towards the end of the third quarter Geelongs endurance ability seemed to overwhelm our boys.

How tough did dipper and dermie throw themselves into the contest! How good were abletts goals? His marks were great as well, two knees in the back each time though. Chris langford held his ground amazingly! both legs were planted in the ground like two giant oak trees.

The shepperding was absolutely brutal! Behind the scenes smackdowns.

Fantastic stuff. What was your favourite part of that game?

The part where we hold up the 1989 premiership cup. :D

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

Best grand final I have seen.

Although I would contend that rather than the Cats endurance it was more our 'walking wounded' status that got Geelong so close.

If the game ended up a tie, only 15 of those players would have been available the next week.

The courage displayed was amazing.

However, if you wanted a better game that year, search out the round six game against the Cats at Princes Park.

Hawks down by 10 goals at halftime but still get up.

Geelong still holds the highest ever losing score from that game.

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

Brereton's mark.

Dipper's elbow on Garry Hocking.

Gary Ayres bump on Ablett

Dean Anderson sealing the game.

And last and very least. Batgirl streaking. Possibly the least memorable streak of all time. Woeful.

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

Great game but even better if you watch it as two part episode with the round 6 game from Princes Park earlier that year (as suggested byTWITA). Rd 6 could be the best home and away game ever played.

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

Dermie getting crunched then getting up and running, pure heart and determination.

Dunstall getting on with business.

Ablett nearly winning it off his own boot, thank god he didn't.

Dippa's heart to keep playing so badly injured.

My dad was at the game and said it was amazing best he has seen ever!

A shocking as it sounds for a lifelong Hawks supporter in my late 20s, I've never seen the 89 GF. Downside of growing up in a non-Hawk supporting family, I suppose.

Should get off my backside and hire the GF DVD one day - sounds a cracking game.

I have vague memories of watching the 91 grand final on TV at the time, but have never seen a Hawk GF since.

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

I was there and the most relieving part of the game was the final siren. I can remember, I'd almost eaten my footy record. The final quarter seemed to go forever.

Don't hire it - buy it. A must-have addition to any Hawk's DVD library.

Mine has copped a flogging over the lean years.

Which posters here were there, at the actual game?

I was watching it on television and getting a tad nervous in the final quarter!

I d/l it from fr333dom.com the other day. Its still there... Not brilliant quality, but at least the crummy/funny 80s ads have been edited out!

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

Anderson and Pritchard just running and running late in the last quater when we had nothing left.

Dermie of course ... hero.

Telling anyone who cared to listen later that night that Ablett just may go down in history but Hawthorn won the game.

Making my scottish rugby loving brother in law drinky bundy and coke and watch the dvd over and over until he accepted that Aussie Rules is the superior game.

I was and had my eyes on Derm the whole way through the incident with Yeates at the start. Have always said, the bump you see in the replays wasn't the one that cuased the problems, it's the the second one that caused the damage and I expect it was more fist into his middle than bump.

I was just relieved at the end to be honest.

I agree, Thaihawk.

I was there - the last 15 minutes were agony. We had Ayres & Platten on the bench since quarter time, both unable to play, and Brereton out on his feet - they were 3 of our greatest players, and they just couldn't contribute.

There were several other walking wounded Hawks, and those thug Geelong players kept coming back at us.

We should have massacred them by 100 points, and would have done so if not for all the injuries. Such a great Hawthorn team, and the Cats got within 6 points just by sheer thuggery.

Strange to say but that was the worst of our 80's Premierships.
And I can't bear to watch the replay

.

I think some of our players gave as well as they got.

Wounded or not, it looked to me like Dipper and Brereton played the roles of enforcer quite well. ;)

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

Watched it on TV in the West....It was huge as we were gunning for "back to back" which a lot of opposition supporters were using against us....

"yeah, the Hawks a good team, but you've never won back to back"....(Of course never hear that now)...

At the time, it seemed if you didn't follow Hawthorn, then you wanted the Cats to win.

The last 16 seconds when Dipper holds the ball up in the centre seemed to take an eternity....I remember jumping up and shouting out the countdown of the clock...Massive relief....

Got to go to the 91 GF 2 years later....best day ever....against WCE as well....I'll never forget that day.

Re: Watched the 89 Grandfinal lastnight for the 1st time since the event itself.

I was there - worst seats in the house. 5 rows from the front, in what was Hawthorns forward pocket in the last quarter. Talk about death valley for action.

Didnt have a radio, kept thinking why is Greg Madigan on?

Fuming at Anthony Condon for wearing the wrong stops on his shoes. Every time he got the ball he would slip, I mean everytime  You would think he would have changed at least by half time but nope, continued to play and continued to slip.

Sat there during the final quarter watching the Geelong score go up faster than a petrol price rise - and seeing Gary Ablett soaring up to take another mark. Kept screaming out for someone to just bash him and that would be it.

Enjoyed the atmosphere but had to see the replay to find out what actually happened.
