Despite a good structure and quality of talls, they are never going to be able to win it all with the midfield they have. And it's been that way for years. I'm surprised they've done as well as they have to be honest, especially last year. And I realise I am stating the obvious ... everybody else has said it and the staff know it (hence bringing in Redden and Jetta).

The only decent mids they have are Shuey and Gaff, along with an aging Priddis. And while these guys might get into AA contention/selection, they are still a decent notch below the truly elite mids like Fyfe, Dangerfield, Ablett, Pendlebury, Mitchell, etc.

I think they could be in a bit of no-man's land for a few years. They're going to be good enough to finish say 6th-12th, but I don't see any young mids coming through that will make much difference. Duggan and Sheed could be OK, but they seem very vanilla and I'll be surprised if they end up better than say Masten. At best they will help balance the decline of Priddis and maintain the status quo.

Jeez this is how bad BigFooty is. So reactionary. After the win against the crows everyone had Eagles as a dark horse to win the flag. Now they gone and everyone says they are cooked.

Crows lose everyone writes them off. Hawks lost a while back and they were cooked.

Eagles just had a shocker at the worst time. This is the most even top 8.

Just sit back and enjoy the ride and appreciate that every final this season is who turns up on the day

I like your insight. A lot

We are in a lot of trouble next year Nic Nat out for a whole year will expose us i see a bottom 10 finish next year and top 8 the year after

A lot of players just didn't mirror 2015. Yeo and Cripps are prime example.

Hard decision has to be made on Lecras too. I know he really wants that flag after missing out on 2006 but his year was awful. Then again they have no one to play that role and somehow Hill would still survive. Wellingham is another Des Headland. Stand out in a premiership that came home and did nowt. Brad Hill will be the same if he went to Freo.

Full credit to Hutchings though, earned his new deal.

Who wants him, though? Trade value would be pick 40+.

Redden got a first rounder...needless to say if Redden got one, Masten could get an early 2nd rounder.

To be fair, Jetta looked half decent v Hawks and Adelaide.

But he probably would have spudded up tonight in a red hot game.

Maybe...but who was the genius that decided to play EIGHT talls against the Bulldogs who rely on speed? No wonder you were killed on the outside.

They're soft. If they don't get silver service from their rucks (Naitanui) they can't win first possession. Their starting centre square mids front run and gamble that the ball will go their way, and if it doesn't they are exposed. They structure up entirely to hide that their midfield is as weak as piss. Stop them taking intercept marks, give them even the slightest impression of tackling pressure, and they disappear.

How many times did you see Eagles players pull out tonight? It's not lack of skills, it's not lack of pace or fitness. They are soft pretenders.
This.

Bit of an overreaction. In 2015 we applied tons of pressure for four quarters week in week out (apart from a few games at the start and of course the GF). Pressure football to cause turnovers which helped us lock the ball in opponents halves for long periods of time.

We saw that same team a couple of weeks ago in the GWS game and even more so in the Hawks and Crows clashes. The problem is that we hadn't applied that same pressure all year. We have been soft in quite a few games and coasted to some easy wins in others. There had been glimpses, but nothing like a four-quarter effort over a period of several weeks.

Applying pressure and playing high intensity football needs to be practised both physically and mentally. You can't simply flick on the switch when you feel like it, you need to build that kind of form during the season so it becomes the default setting. We haven't done that and the result is clear.

When you don't apply the pressure, opponents have time to pick out team-mates and get over the back of your zone. You end up looking slow and disorganised.

There are some players that need a good shake-up, but when they play at their best they can be very good players. Yeo hasn't been as good as last year and Darling needs his head examined because he lacks confidence, but discarding them would be madness. We still have a lot of young players and very good KPPs. Jetta and Redden can add something and hopefully another pre-season will get them settled and focused. LeCras can still add something, but needs some competition up forward to shake him up a bit. A new ruckman might not be needed as Giles has looked alright and hopefully Lycett won't need a full reco on his knee.

Get their heads right, develop some of the younger players and we'll be fine next year.
