WE need to appeal our sanctions

So what would we all prefer, a lettuce slap for Essendon giving us grounds to appeal our own draft sanctions or for Essendon to cop the fully monty and we live with our own penalties?

FWIW, I sit in the later category.

A lettuce slap but only if our picks were reinstated. A losing appeal holds no merit.

Ultimately we are Crows supporters and should want the best for our club.

I would agree with you in most situations, however I think this one is vastly different.

The longer the Dons draw this out the more damage they do to their club and brand.
We heard yesterday a players mother and the issues they were going through as a family, there's probably another 20 families feeling the same. Then there are the sponsors, they would not be liking the negative publicity and would be thinking about sponsorship arrangement long term with the Dons.

What happens if they take the AFL to court and lose, how will they explain that to players, parents and sponsors?? Then think about what parents may be saying if their son has a chance of being drafted by them.
What if they cant explain what was injected into players, they are likely to get sued by parents. Then there is the possibility of players walking out on the club.

This isn't going to end nicely for them one way or the other and the effects of this will be felt by the Dons for years. The more they fight and keep this in the public domain the more damage it will do to their club.

What we did was bad but the allegations against the Dons is 10 times worse and they must be penalised accordingly if found guilty. If we were penalised for 2 drafts they must be excluded from at least 4 on top of other penalties the AFL determines.
Fair enough and I understand your point.

But if Essendon wrap it all up Monday without loss of draft picks , would you agree their brinkmanship has served them well? Will anyone remember or care in a few years time when their draft picks are up and running.

In the meantime out club has been the good citizen which gets us where ?

We fired up the silks and postured only to collapse, whereas Essendon has huffed puffed and shown very clearly they will blow the house down rather than lose draft picks . The whole episode is very instructive of our willingness to roll over and sacrifice our future rather than be seen to be upsetting the afl.

I bet, the players involved will get an infraction notice......however, it won't be for 15 years....well after the players have retired.

The AFL will say, we git them, we showed them and we are a competition of high standards and enormous integrity.

The players won't get charged, it's gone on too long now to do that.

I was thinking this way last night, but the integrity of the game has to override our own ambitions here.

If Essendon cop the full whack then we don't have grounds for appeal. If draft sanctions aren't part of the penalties then we have more than enough grounds to feel aggrieved.

This is what frustrates me with the AFL, they always come out tough and relatively consistent when it comes to policing but then its like they have a spin of the chocolate wheel when handing out penalties.

I totally agree with you Peter. We as a club are more concerned with being a good citizen of the AFL and are hell bent at being seen as a respectful, professionally run well administered club. To continually accept the bias against us is a massive sign of weak leadership. If as you suggest Essendon are able to wrap it up Monday without the loss of draft picks what does that say about us as a nice compliant club. I only wish we had leaders in our organisation that would fight for our club instead of being submissive all of the time. To think that we have lost the equivalent of 2 first round draft picks, 2 second round draft picks,Tippett, what ever we could of traded Tippett for,Matt Rendell,16 weeks of not having Dean Bailey in our coaching group and a hefty fine and our esteemed leaders think we should be satisfied with this outcome.Give me a break. Where is the fight. We as usual meekly surrender and accept what ever we get. And don't for one minute think that when we run out to play interstate we are going to be playing on a level playing field but we never complain never rock the boat. Maybe if our club was a bit more assertive we might actually be given a fairer go.

They're good at watching.

Surely it's better they watch to see what happens than go off half cocked? Remember, they know how negotiations work at the afl house of pain. They know negotiations are taking place and will wait to see what the final outcome is.

If the bombers get a light penalty you can bet Triggy will right the AFL a very stern letter-----and thats it

No, it's a I can't say. FFS.

Jenny, time will tell.

History isn't on your side regarding the Crows administration having the gumption to stand up and question the AFL.

Losing hone finals, crows vs Melb - nope.
Stadium deals - nope (we still have the worst)
Gibbs father son - nope
Matthew Rendell - nope
Tippett - nope
Dean Bailey - nope

So, you honestly expect us to believe our administration will now grow a set and stand up to the AFL? Sorry but I call bullshit.

This s a crows issue, not Trigg as that list are not all his doing.

They have huffed and puffed but are still sitting down to negotiate. Essendon supporters are furious. Why huff and puff and not see it through? Because the AFL holds your balls in their hands is why.

I'm not asking you to believe anything. I even said in my first post I thought they should act, but don't know if they will. I do know they are watching what happens though.

The AFL is a house of cards. All it would take is one decent blow, and it would all come tumbling down. The draft, the fixture, the COL allowance, the works would all disappear. The wealthy clubs would prosper, the struggling clubs would fold. Why do you think all 17 other clubs sided with the AFL after Little called for a vote of no confidence in Vlad?

And if they escape without draft sanctions - what will you think of their huffing and puffing then. Of course Essendon are negotiating still . They didn't like what they heard first time, went away an upped the ante, now they are back knowing the afl are desperate to wrap this up to preserve the finals series.

The big Melbourne clubs are more important to the AFL than the interstate clubs. The AFL is still just the VFL with add on teams.

I will pass judgement when final announcement of penalties are announced. We won't know how effective their huff and puff was until we see the end result.
