Fantastic debut season. It's kinda funny in hindsight that we were all worried about him coping with media pressure and being physically targeted by opponents, when it turns out he's both a cocky little punk who loves the spotlight and a savage nut who thrives on violence. It's been beautiful to watch so far, and I haven't been this hyped to watch a player's career unfold since Naitanui. He's 100% the kind of player you rebuild around. Toss him the keys to the Eagles and let's ****ing go!

He definitely exceeded what I expected of him this year. To get a tag after only 8 games is something scary. One thing I'd do with him? Any and every match sim they have in pre-season..sit Yeo on him for the entire match sim. I wanna see him handle the tag better next year and not turn and wave his arms around the umps in frustration.

I know he's still only a footy baby so I know he'll hopefully grow out of it the fitter and AFL hardened he gets. But I still want Yeo up his clacker to get him ready for the start of the season. Bit of an indictment on guys like Yeo and Kelly that they're tagging a 19 year old instead of them...but what can you do..

What a debut season. Unfair he won't win the Rising Star, although at least we've been saved the trauma of the Victorian football mafia awarding it to Darcy. Remember when Shuey got marked down because he was a third year player against Dyson? Kevin Bartlett still votes on these things for Gods sake.

Anyway, Harley showed a bit of everything in his first year, the most exciting talent to walk through the door since the last number 9. Obviously he will be tagged from now on but knowing when to move him forward to be damaging will help alleviate that pressure. Can't wait to see Hewett and Ginbey in at a few centre bounces with him next year. Or roving up forward with Longy and Dewar.

Needs to work on his personal relationships with the umpires who have decided to let him get mauled from siren to siren. Throwing the arms up and complaining doesn't help- find time to connect with Cripps or Rowell in the off season on how to win friends and influence free kicks.

Harley Reid up to, and including, R11 v Adelaide (10 games) :

FF - 26
FA - 17

He received 7 free kicks in the Adelaide game and the noise started to come about him playing for frees/ducking etc

The next game was St Kilda. He was penalised 5 times and received 2 free kicks despite Windhager attaching himself like a limpet for the entire second half. He was also suspended for 2 weeks for a dangerous tackle that didn’t cause an injury but was adjudged to have the potential to do so

Harley Reid from, and including, R12 v St Kilda (9 games) :

FF - 14
FA - 27

Despite receiving significantly more attention from the opposition in the back half of the season he received far fewer free kicks whilst simultaneously being penalised far more regularly

He was umpired differently and it’s led to a lot of his frustrations later in the year

That's actually absurd and West Coast if they had any balls should issue the AFL a very public "What the actual **** campaigners?"

Sounds like he's copping the Ginnipig treatment from the umps. Needs a reset for next year.

The reverse Nic Dickoss, who is never pinged for throws ever and can be absolutely caught dead in a tackle, drop the ball and not be penalized. He also doesn't constantly engage with the umps or scuffles like Harley does, so there's that.

I'm so glad we took him and didn't cave to the media bullshit. He is an unbelievably impactful player. He doesn't need 480 junk touches from kick ins every week or to be winning cheap footy on the outside. 20 touches from Harley often involves a couple of snags, and almost every one of those possessions is damaging. If he can put in a big pre-season, build his body and endurance... he is definitely one of those guys where you can say if he finishes the day with 25 and 2, fair chance we've won that game.

That last qtr stint up forward is what I'm so excited for in 2025

Reckon he could be a highlights reel even more up there.

Just need some guys to get it down there

He will be a serious mismatch if we can further bolster the midfield so we can just rotate him with another young gun and say you know what - if you want to tag and target him all game, good luck matching up with him deep forward next to his mates Jake, Oscar, Tyrell and Liam.

Stating the obvious, but if these are facts, umpiring is a blight on the game that needs investigating.
It implies there was a meeting or a message sent after the Adelaide game, to address the supposed imbalance of free kicks to Harley - free kicks supposedly awarded fairly from impartial umpires? It also implies that the umpiring wasn't correct in the Adelaide game, that umpiring is imperfect (which is a given in this code and most codes)

Was it a message sent from higher up the AFL chain, a meeting of umpires, complaints from oppo coaches? Whatever occurred, it is a form of fixing, corruption, bias, and yet another case of Victoria manipulating the so called 'national league'. It is their version of equalisation, no different to the noise of affirmation - which only seems to occur in W.A. There is a lack of transparency, shouldn't these matters be discussed openly? These are topics the media should focus on, holding the AFL and the game accountable instead of endless moronic clickbaits on Harley.

Would the same thing occur if Harley was playing for a Vic team? Is there evidence of the same thing happening with other players across the code? If so, then at least there's a form of even-handedness, otherwise it's a rort. Equally do umps get reigned in for penalising a player too much with free kicks against? Do the mysterious minions behind the scenes send a directive down the line?

The AFL tries to prevent criticism of the umpires, the coaches are not allowed to weigh-in on umps (not publicly anyway). Fanbases are allowed to hurl all the abuse they want at umps (short of throwing bottles etc). Yet there is a constant covert 'correction' of umpire decisions behind closed doors, hypocrisy surely.

I fully understand that umpiring is an imperfect science and will never be perfect. Also that Harley appears at times to play for free kicks with the raised arms and appeals to umpires and ducking into high tackles. On a side note, was this a part of his game before he arrived at West Coast, before he was coached by Shuey?

What are the chances his Goal streaming away from Trac is the goal of the year? Drapers was very good a year or 2 ago, but being a ruckman really helps that out, looked like Nic nats greatest point of all time.

Also just seen he seems to have 3 mark of the year nominations, with Baily as well, we and a brockman.
we have alot of nominations this year.

Very high. I'd imagine they want him to attend the brownlow. I have no doubt vic media will want him to talk at brownlow hence he will win it.

No doubt the Vic media throw in some cheeky arent wce crap and why don't you come to vic and homesickness etc.

Well Daicos had a much worse running goal that didn’t even win Goal of the Round, but I guarantee they’ll get it involved in some sort of podium finish that’s for sure.

Not really close in terms of impact

Pretty amazing stats there - some of those guys, McKercher in particular, are still good footballers and probably beat him on the stats sheet. Nice to see it's not just bias. 20 games in his first year for a crash and bash physical player like him is a bloody good effort.

Contested ball >>>>>>>>>>>>>> uncontested ball

He averaged 5 clearances a game, the second best was 2.4 per game in Ryley Sanders
He average 9.8 contested possessions per game, second best (ignoring those with 4 or less games) was 5.4 per game in Sanderrs again and Tholstrup.

Harley was also treated differently by the MRO and at the tribunal. He copped a 2 week suspension for a tackle where no one got hurt, and yet Jones got a fine for his tackle against the Giants on Sunday which was far far more dangerous than Harley's.
Perhaps the club should lobby for having another MRO appointed instead of that idiot Christian.

Another Bullshit decision by the tribunal, Owies from Carlton copped a week for a tackle that was similar to the
Jones one that only rated a fine.
There should be no disparity of sentences. West Coast should have taken Harleys case to court.
Of the 3 cases he copped the largest penalty for the least likely to injure tackle.
How was that fair ????
