Want Taranto but not Hopper keep as many of our draft pics

12, 19, 30 and F1 for TT and Hopper needs to be done if that’s what it takes. It might be over pay but its better to just get a trade done then try win it like Dodoro.

We have two glaring holes on our list, inside mid and KPF. Worse they’re probably the two most influential positions on the ground, outside that forward mid creator role.

We could fill those holes with those picks but the problem is the best ones usually go earlier then those picks, you can definitely get lucky and get a champ but your chances are diminished. Everyone always remembers Cripps at 13 or Fyfe at 19 but forgets the absolute trash picked around them. Lennon, Mcarthy, Z Jones, Acres, Dunstan, Lang and Apeness or Menzel, Griffiths, Tapscott, Kobe Stevens, Weedock and Bastanoc. And none of that fixes the hole for next season.

Not to mention if we try to fill KPF or inside mid at the draft we maybe forced to reach for a player, to fill a need.

Conversely we can turn inside mid from our biggest weakness to a strength in one off season. Taranto and Hopper are studs, but one on their own just probably makes our midfield competitive instead of potentially top 4 in league.

To be top 4 with only one we’d need Cotchin to be near his best, Prestia to stay healthy or an RCD/Ross/Dow to become an AFL quality inside mid. That’s a lot to hope for.

We have the best forward line, with a below average midfield and an average defence hurt by our below average midfield. Yet somehow we were still in the lead in the final quarter in every game bar 2 or 3 last year.

Plus they’re 24/25. They’ll be our mids for half decade, so you don’t lose much. And there will always be another chance to hit the draft in the future.

I think KPF will be a problem but inside midfield is the problem right now. Acquiring Taranto and Hooper would turn that weakness into a strength. Then next year we need to either trade for or draft in (maybe by trading out players to move up in the draft?) a KPF. I think if we can see it, our list management team would of had it on the radar years a go.

Exactly! This list management team has proven twice now they’ve seen a hole and fixed it (maybe even 3 if you count Prestia, but I don’t think that was a glaring hole more just improving a strength). They saw a hole in KPF and got Lynch, this time they see inside mids and get two exceptional ones.

Better still it’s been obvious we have targeted all of Lynch, Hopper and Taranto a long way out. Our recruiters have anticipated these holes, which tells you they’re pretty good at what they do.

Drafting unproven youngsters is an educated guess, drafting proven talent is more like an exact science and backs up your your premise

Yes and Blair is currently working on Todd Marshall & Ben King

I always thought the Giants were top heavy over the ground. their 2019 team had Cameron, Finlayson Himmelburg up fwd and Corr, Taylor, Haynes Davis. That's tall. Mumford fell into their lap as fall out from the buddy trade. They took injured players into the GF, and got belted. But, it was good for NSW football. I met a couple of AFL fans who didn't like the Swans.
I don't mind Nank, Mummy Preuss, Pittonet, type rucks. There's only one Gawn or Brundy

The bizzare situation they Giants find themselves in is having a constant (over) supply of high draft picks and which is not making them a better team. They go for best available Bruhn, Callaghan. There's always other clubs coming after their players

Their list is underperforming so I expect a bounce back to good football with a new coach.
Suns on the other hand
Clubs like us target their players because we know they have completely screwed their cap & have to trade them out.

Gws have the self imposed salary cap issues. Why not play hardball?

Badly coached and a poor list build. Too many star junior mids and not enough talls or role players.

It was expected they’d take Grundy at pick 1 but didn’t take him in the first 3 picks letting him fall all the way to pick 18. There’s been plenty of talls at their selections but they’ve always monopolised the young mids coming through and ignored their spine.

They’ve had guys like Mumford who they didn’t even plan for, and s**t trucks like Preuss in the ruck. While you don’t need a high priced star but you can’t load up on mids and nothing else.

First time Ive heard too many star mids being an issue.

They have had some decent bigs; Cameron. Taylor. Hh. Davies. Lobb. Finlayson. Riccardi etc.

What I will say, Hopper fits more of a need for us.

Taranto is icing on the cake - in fact, Taranto is at his lowest trade value right now, everyone has forgotten how good this guy is. Leon Cameron made a mare of his on field role.

Dimma could end up genuinely receiving an absolute superstar, and one of the best players in the competition in Taranto if he can rediscover his previous form and build that into our system.

Yep Taranto has a much higher ceiling. Could be a steal under a good coach and system.
