I'm not sure when you got to see Jasper play, but I've watched him at the VFL games 3 times now, and I can honestly say he's a lot better than you are suggesting.

He needs to work on his running patterns - especially laterally - and needs more 'forward craft' to play against experienced players.

But - but - this will be his first professional pre-season (I refuse to include the WAFL) and he is by all accounts showing more than a bit.

He's big, strong, quick off the mark, and good grab and has a monster kick.

He now needs to learn the 'craft' - which he will, and quickly.

If Dear doesn't get up for the start of the season, I have no doubt that Jasper will be, at the very least, under consideration.

The kid can play.
Big, big opportunity for Jasper to play early and often now with Dear and Lewis both out for an extended period of time.

He's such a massive unit, I think he could be pretty useful if he can get his mobility up to even baseline AFL standard.

Realistically we don't have many other options apart from moving Sic forward which I don't think is a long term solution.

I do hope you are on the money with Jasper and a full pre-season will tell us a lot. As a guide, how did you rate Jekka after he had been with us for 6 months (I'm not being facitious)?. Perhaps Jasper has more desire but I'm not sure he has better skills.

I have not seen him live but have watched as much video that I can view as I am not in Melbourne.

As an almost 60-year hawk and former junior & senior coach, I have my view on what I have seen. Having said that, I will back in every player that joins our club and cheer for them to do well.

Such a shame he will have this delayed start, he was the player I was most looking forward to watching this season.

He is such a natural, and he (and Chol) was forming a great understanding with Watson, with their taps to his advantage and creating space for him.

I wonder if we will go with a smaller F50, with Chol and Gunston as our talls, or will Ramsden come in and offer a target? Personally I hope it's Weddle that moves up the ground.

I'd still rather keep Sicily and Battle in the backline.

How's the overreaction on this board. If we are pinning on our hopes on a devolping 19 year old kpp we are in trouble. There is also 3 months until the season, a stress reaction isn't a stress fracture.
No one’s ‘pinning their hopes’ on Calsher. I for one am just disappointed for the young man that he’s suffered a setback so early. I’m sure others are the same. Even if he does get up for round one, he’ll be underdone without a proper pre-season.

And in the light of our best key forward perpetually struggling to get on the park, it becomes doubly disappointing.

Depends how bad Dears injury is and we are not sure yet of a time line.

So it was just a coicidence we barely lost a game since he debuted? Dont care what age he is, he's an integral part of our forward line. He could be right to go round 1, but the fact it's all bit of an unknown means it could be longer.

I would wrap him in cotton wool for half the season, far to valuable to risk long term and likely what the club may do, can just focus on conditioning and core once his able to train. His the best first year forward I’ve seen since almost anyone, and not just for the goals he kicked but how he brought everyone into the game, will be no easy task replacing 50 goals for the year but we have the players now to do so.

I’m some ways I reckon it helps us find a balance of Sicily, Hardwick, battle, weddle (and co) who rotate forward and back as needed, and we get to clear the 50 for the wiz to make his mark. Gives the coaches a lot to focus on…

And fingers crossed Lewis can just slot straight back in with the movement of 2023 Lewis.

Let's be honest, we're not exactly flush with key fwds at present.

The positive thing with Skaife ……. loved the way when he arrived at the club and said something like “I’m going to be a 200 game player for the HFC”, it’s only his first preseason, at training he is like a sponge seeking advice from great backs such as Barrass and co on how to position the body in marking contests etc. Shows plenty of determination

I wouldn’t base his ceiling on a small number of BH games he is far from the finished product.

The best and most eye catching thing about dear was how competitive he was when the ball hit the ground. İf scaiffe can replicate that then we won't miss a beat as we have multiple scoring options in our frwd line. Ramsden might get first crack but he seems to rely on marking and not so good with the ground ball and pressure. Sicily could be an option until one of or both Lewis and dear get back. We should be fine as long as mabs and gunners are injury free in that period.

With 2 defenders coming in, it may be more of a solution than you think

Scaife plays like Lewis from what I’ve seen. Very much a leading type of forward whose well built.

Ramsden has more ground game but seems more of a ruckman currently than a forward. Has also had his troubles against stronger players. Hopefully the extra size will help him.

The only forward we have that plays like Dear is Chol.

If none of the talls are putting their hands up I’d rather go with a smaller set up and more forward pressure.

He literally carried us into finals, and borderline dominated the one we won. Pinning your hopes on him seems more like being consistent imo, though his absence will also create opportunities for others.

But if it's a stress response, he's going to need to do some serious work with corrective movement peeps. Hopefully he comes back better for it.

Relieved that it's not a stress fracture though, that is a great point you make there.
