Really the value pick that everybody missed (and in hindsight would have been absolutely perfect for us now) is Josh Treacy at pick 7 in the bloody Rookie draft that year.

And we was still picked before Ginni!

If anybody cares, I represented us in a Phantom draft that season.

I took Tanner Bruhn with our first pick, then traded up to grab Bailey Laurie. (Swapped future firsts with Richmond to facilitate it, which in reality would have worked out to only be a 1 pick difference 12 months later).
Matched a bid for Connor Downie, then took Jack Ginnivan late.

In hindsight we probably would have been okay if this is what happened in real life 🤣.

I love Ginni, but I'd trade him for Treacy in a heartbeat.

Downie was the one that ended up being a disappointment, unfortunately.

Agree with all of that.

I'll just never understand how he got through the endurance testing. Surely his time would've stood out as a red flag.

I am told Patrick Cripps stood out like a ball of fat and tested badly as well, so slide to pick 13.

Pies were interested at first and had 2 top 10 picks.

Drafting is clearly not an exact science.

Really feel for him, he showed such promise in his early games, I had very high hopes for him. Aside from injuries, which are unquestionably a factor, I really can't put my finger on what happened and why it didn't work for him.

Hope he gets picked up elsewhere.
he will get another go somewhere, as high draft picks always seem to get another chance. Whilst I wish him the best, I just don't think he is cut out for AFL football. Best of luck Denver.

Gutted for Denver. By all reports he was a bit of a mood maker in the dressing room. All the boys speak highly of his character.

Hope he gets another chance.

Sometimes it doesn't work out.

As soon as we started trialling DGB as a forward, in year 3, it was clear he was struggling to find a place in our system.

I don't look at it as a wasted pick, as it did seem like Denver was the best selection available for us at the time, in one of the trickiest drafts in history. But this is exactly why a player's draft pick number becomes irrelevant as soon as they arrive at a club. There's 40+ players that are equally as desperate to carve out their own careers regardless of where they were drafted. That's not a stab at DGB, as I'm sure he gave it his best.

Wishing DGB well for the future.

All the best Denver, hopefully he will get another chance with the Blues.

He will definitely have less competition for the half back interceptor role at Carlton which in my opinion is his one shot at making it in the AFL.

I’m almost sentimental at the impending end of this thread, 151 pages long! He their even been so many pages written for a guy who played a grand total of 28 games?
