Harry Morrison (34 disposals, nine marks, six score involvements, three inside 50s, three tackles)

“As I've said for a number of weeks in a row, Harry was really solid for us. He started on the wing and spent some minutes across there. Then due to a few injuries and personnel, we moved Harry to half-back and didn't get a rotation in the second half, just purely based off injuries and what we had available for us. He used the ball really well and was really calm. The thing that Harry’s doing is he’s putting his hand up and he’s got his foot jarred in the door so if the door does open, he's ready to take that step through to AFL level. That's all he can do at the moment - continue to play really consistent and solid footy, which he's doing. He’s making great decisions with ball in hand and is able to be really tough as well in the contest. If an opportunity arises, I'm sure Harry will walk straight through the door and definitely be ready and that's what we want our players to be.”

He was a Clarko favourite wasn’t he so wondering if North are into him

Not really, it was more that Morrison managed up well. He asked if he could have a regular one on one with Clarko, and Clarko was initially impressed with that. Once it became clear with he wasn't going to be an A-grade player Clarko's time dried up a bit...

Some stella form in the last few weeks at Box Hill. He hasn't played with the freedom he's showing since his first year at Box Hill, I've loved it. Just the sort of player we need as flexible backup, hope we keep him.

He’s good depth but I don’t see him making it for Hawthorn.

I can tell you straight up this is wrong, Clarko left the club with a lot of affection for Harry

I get the feeling Harry Morrison is going to become the coach of the Hawthorn football club one day.
Great understanding of the game and he points fingers on the field as well as anybody I have ever seen, perhaps except for Hodge.

ELITE finger pointing!

GENERATIONAL digit directing!

I don't think what you are saying and what I said is in disagreement. Clarko stopped their regular one on one performance chat, that's all I'm saying.

If you are right it's either because he gets a good offer somewhere else or we have so few injuries we don't need any depth in several positions he can fill. Both outcomes are good for us!

I know it's hard as we have a really healthy list in his position at the moment. But he's played over 90 games, in his 8th season and in fantastic form and not getting a game and probably in a group with younger players in Ward, Maginness and Mitchell who are next in line to come in. I can see him going elsewhere, I can also see him staying and being that depth player who covers injuries and the side doesn't miss a beat. Kyle Cheney and Jonathan Simpkin did this well for us in our threepeat years. If you are vying for top4 and playing against a rival during a patch of injuries, i'd much rather play a 100 gamer with a mature body than whoever you got with pick 58 in the previous years draft.

If he did that it wasn't because he wasn't going to be an A-Grader, I don't know anything about any 1:1s. I know from someone pretty close to Harry that Clarko felt he was a future leader pretty much all the way up until he left the Hawks.

He's too good for the VFL - being that he's a free agent this year I dare say he would be departing at year's end for a club that would give him more minutes. A shame as I've always liked him but I dare say he doesn't want to be a depth only player if he can get a gig elsewhere as a best 22 player.

I honestly think he'd be very good for Melbourne. He's a good spot up kick inside 50 and he's a hard worker. They need someone on the outside with somewhat better skills.

Yeah they have some gaps in that midfield he could help fill. He'd like have a couple of suitors keen to grab him - he wouldn't be an expensive acquisition you'd imagine. A shame he couldn't quite go to another level or find another string to his bow - his workrate is all you could ask for.

Would walk into the Dogs best side on the wing.

They might think they're a chance of landing another long player from us like Taylor Duryea.

Honestly, how good was Morrison yesterday?

16 disposals, 3 score involvements, 9 marks and 2 tackles in less than half a game of football.

For me, he’s the best sub option we have going into the remainder of the year. I love Breusty, but he can’t offer the above at his age. Also seriously hope we find a way to keep him at the club.

He was very good. Not sure about the comparison to Breust though. They both offer very different impact as sub.

Morrison very good at getting involved in the transition as a link player. While Breust can fill a gap in the forward line and chip in with a couple crucial late game goals.

With Gunston and Dear in the same side and neither being completely consistent in terms of scoreboard impact it’s been important to have Breust as sub from a tactical perspective. And even though one will likely be dropped for Lewis, until we’re comfortable that Lewis can consistently play full games at AFL level, it’s probably a good idea to keep Breust or even Wingard in strong consideration for sub.

Morrison does appear to offer more flexibility as sub in general. He can play most roles well and can be relied upon to insert himself into the game quickly (some subs struggle to pick up the pace and get involved).

I’m happy to see either Morrison or Breust lining up as sub as it means we’re batting deep and have a pretty fit list.

I only mention Breust as I thought prior to yesterday, he had been named sub the most this year? Could be wrong.

I think we’re finally getting close to our best team. I understand there might be situations where an extra tall as the sub might be beneficial, but I’m not sure if that’s the best path forward.

Morrison just provides such a great amount of outside run, that I think - if fully fit - Dear sadly goes back to BH, Gunners, Lewis and Chol remain the talls and Morrison the sub.

I got you. My point was more that what Morrison offers as sub and what Breust offers as sub is very different. Morrison might get more of the ball while Breust can directly impact the scoreboard. So there's no clear "best sub option" to go with each week when our sub selection is going to depend on other factors that will change from week to week.

We could even add Seamus to the list of potential sub options if he doesn't take back a starting 22 spot soon. That gives us 3 very good options who can come in and impact in each third of the ground.

Harry highly unlikely to be at Hawthorn next year, a pity because he is a real heart and soul player, but he'd realise he has limited opportunities at the Hawks going forward. Similar story with Chad, who is a fantastic player at his best and will still only be 31 at the start of next season. Dual AA's don't grow on trees, and when fit he's an absolute beauty.
As I've mentioned before, this will become a real problem at the end of 2025, when guys not in the best 23, still young, and deserving of a spot in many AFL starting teams, will be weighing up their options.
The likes of HH, Ward, Mitchell, Serong, Ramsden, Butler, Reeves, Maginness and even DGB will attract significant interest.
