The Duke must surely be leading the BnF. Who’s ahead of him?
I’d have thought Sicily and Moore would be ahead of him. He’d be alongside Mitchell, Hardwick and possibly Frost

Lewis and Gunston would probably be ahead if not for missing games.

Will be interesting to see how his form continues. He’s really only had 3 top games with a lot of other good games.

Sciliy and that would probably be it. Even that isn't guaranteed. He keeps this form up, he is a very strong chance of winning it.

Geelong, Essendon and today would be the only games he polls well. Otherwise he’s been low 20s or lower with low contested possessions. He does some really nice things I just think others have been definitely ahead of him so far.

This kid has really legitimised the mid season draft. Suddenly teams are lining up to grab a player this year and I feel it is largely off the back of Duke's rapid growth.

Happy for the kid and glad we had Mitch at Box Hill coaching at the time as he would have seen a huge future for the kid.

2. Newcombe should be the Rising Star favourite

There’s no shortage of contenders to win this year’s NAB AFL Rising Star award, but in my opinion, Hawthorn’s Jai Newcombe is the head of the pack. Newcombe has been unbelievable this season, and in Sunday’s win against the Lions in Launceston, he was phenomenal. Newcombe stuffed the stats sheet, tallying 27 possessions (14 contested), nine clearances, six inside 50s, 664 metres gained, 24 pressure acts, six tackles, 12 score involvements and one goal. He was probably best afield, and if he’s not already Hawthorn’s premium midfielder, he’s not far behind. Ahead of Sunday’s game, Newcombe was averaging 23 disposals, four tackles, three clearances and four inside 50s per game. And, he loves it tough. - Trent Masenhelder

They have to consider that the Duke is playing predominantly as a midfielder and has, at times, been leading the midfield unit.

Whilst Daicos has been playing a mop-up and playmaker role behind the ball.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Daicos as he's pure class, is a year younger and is less physically developed at the moment. But the midfield role is more important, and harder to excel at IMO.

Newcombe's game and numbers this week made a mockery of his 16 game, rookie status.

A lot of his contested efforts (some strong marks) were inspirational, team lifting stuff in the face of real opposition.

I think his ceiling is still a fair way off too. Has that rare mix of skill, power and smarts - along with endurance.

Forget the rising star, he's looking more and more like our next midfield King.

He's the favorite on sportsbet now paying $2.50
Makes the $41 of preseason look mighty juicy now 😅

I am hoping to thank all the training report legends who gave the early mail that he was looking very very good early doors

I took advantage of that pricing and told a bunch of mates to do the same, only one did. I've been letting the rest know about the mistake they made.
