The score involvements is the big 1 for me.
A half back racking up 30 odd touches a game like he has in the back half of the year - in a team that is known for its transition from defence - should have 10 a game at least. He was getting 3

If this is any indication then Newc will probably come 4th in the voting. Insane.
I was just going to warn everyone who thinks Jai is a chance in the award not to read it unless they want to be triggered.

Yeesh some of those votes on AFL.com.au are a hot mess. I’d argue Ginnivans ranking is a lot of recency bias, he’s had some abysmal games in the middle of the season, but just had a decent stretch in the last few.

However, more than recency bias, the clear positive link is ladder position with these rankings. Colour me surprised that they muddle overall team performance with individual performance.

Eh - just means the humble pie will be all the sweeter when Duke wins the Brownlow in a few years ;)

I've long since given up on Jai winning it but having someone legitimately rank him below Ginnivan and Martin makes my blood boil.

He'll come 3rd in the rising star and that's where he deserves to finish.
Statistically he's had the best ever year of any rising star eligible player according to Champion Data (this is across all years since they have been keeping track not just this year).

And he 'deserves' to finish 3rd this year. Just **** off and stop pretending you support Hawthorn. Can't wait until Reeves hits his games target and you are gone.

I'll admit that I've given footy media a pretty wide berth this year (and been better for it). But is the view of Jai's season really that warped amongst pundits?

Daicos has had a very good first year as an uncontested transition player. Yet Jai was clearly a better contested player and a better defensive player. And offensively he advanced the ball further, assisted more goals and had more score involvements in a worse team despite fewer possessions. It's really not hard to make the argument that Jai's season is right there with Daicos' or better depending on what you value.

So to see him not only not considered close to Nick, but in some people's judgements not as good as Ginnivan and Martin seems crazy. I guess everything is a slave to the Collingwood hype train right now.

There was a play in our f50 right at the end of the dogs game where he showed elite evasiveness to break away from congestion, it would have been a fitting end to the season if he was selfish enough to go for goal and kick it himself.
anyways, he deserves a top 3 finish and when your a mid fighting it out with a rebounding defender and a KPD it is difficult to compare metrics and it will come down to subjective opinions and individual preferences. all 3 are special players and any club would be happy to have them.

I really hope that Sam and others at the club are getting around Jai and blokes like Dimma also. I am sure players might say publicly they don't give a stuff about these types of awards but surely it must sting a little to be overlooked when Jai has carried our midfield all year and Dimma is consistently one of the best small defenders in the league and ultra-consistent. In Jai's case finishing runner up and in Dimma's case making the AA squad but not the side would at least be some testament to their output - but if Jai finishes anywhere outside of second and with Dimma not making the squad they'd have every right to feel unfairly overlooked. Hopefully it fires them up to tear sides a new hole next year.

Sam's flown the flag for these guys (and more) in the media. Being recognised internally at the club will always be nice, but to have your senior coach go out in public to tell the world just how good you are would be extra special. Even if it doesn't result in awards coming your way.

In a way it forges a stronger bond between player and coach. Sam has gone out of his way to get players who deserve it the external recognition they deserve, and where it has failed to materialise in awards there is now a shared journey for Sam and players to "prove them all wrong" or even just "prove ourselves right".

Sam threw Morrison's name into AA discussions the other day which was met with some healthy scepticism. That surely creates some extra motivation for Harry to reach that goal next season. Not for the sake of being AA, but because his senior coach showed the belief in him to put his name out there and be (politely) mocked for doing so.

I dont think Harry was quite at AA level, but this year he has stepped up massively. Like the way Moore has. Been some impressive improvements from a number of our young players.

Sadly some have also gone a little backwards (like Nash). Although maybe its not backwards, but just not as much of an improvement as expected.

As for Newcombe, he is easily top 3 in the RS. For anyone not having him there shows an impressive level of cluelessness, but also, their level of stupidity in being willing to show how clueless they are.

A lot of "unsexy mid season draft pick" in those AFL.com rankings. Unworthy of attention (Nic Martin lol). There is a genuine argument for Newcombe being the top performed candidate this year. In my view he should finish second in the rankings behind Daicos, but I don't care. Would prefer to have him on our list moving forward above all other names (except Daicos). I'd probably take Ward over the rest moving forward too (would accept an argument on De Koning). That's all that matters.

Lets put it this way how many games do you think these media guys watch each week?

Now how many of those games would have been Pies games?

Now how many of those games would be Hawks games?

I honestly doubt they have sat down and watched many Hawk games this year. I honestly could not care less where in the top 5 Duke places, if he goes on to have the career i think he will it will be long forgotten.

daicos would be a worthy winner if he indeed wins but it would be interesting to know how his stats would change if you excluded all his kick-ins, and see how much his metres gained and disposal stats would decline.

Averages 2 a game

Averages 2 a game

Thanks and 100% played on for each kick-in I see.
So based on this his average disposal would be 2 less, and if you assume it contributes to 50m gained per kick-in it would reduce his metres gained stat by around 100m.

Nothing surer than media nuffies reaming us in awards like this. Clarko never won coach of the year during his time at the hawks despite being known as the greatest coach of the modern era…

Cyril came second to Rhys Palmer and Ryan Burton lost to Andy McGrath so no doubt Daicos, Ginnivan, Dekoning and maybe even Martin will somehow be voted ahead of Duke…

Wouldn’t be surprised if Sicily somehow misses the AA side as the cherry on top…

Disappointing but there are a lot of really good young mids, so he was always pushing the proverbial uphill to get selected in that squad. Hard to argue he's had a better season than any of those included and I'm as big a fan of Newc as there is.
Can't get a game ahead of Coleman?, Taking the piss if these selectors think Coleman has been better this year. He has had a good 6 week period and all of a sudden this is all these clowns remember. It's an insult he isn't even on the bench. Ill laugh If he wins the rising star and can't get a gig in the best under 22 squad. Will embarrass those involved and they would deserve it.

This should be stickied somewhere

Don't think many of us are saying he'll win it(I believe he deserves it but won't). But 'deserves' to come 3rd is absolute garbage.

What are you basing this off? Daicos has basically played purely off a back flank raking in easy numbers. De Koning has been fantastic for sure but talking purely from an influence POV are you actually saying they've been better Jai? The guy has literally carried our midfield in his second season.

If he was the number 1 pick in the draft last year he would absolutely s**t it in. But he won't and you're likely correct he'll probably finish 3rd or even 4th..

But to to say that he he deserves to finish 3rd is completely incorrect.

Name me some draftees that became that teams number 1 mid and didn't finish top 2 in the rising star.

If DGB does what De Koning has done this year in his 3rd year next season, this board will be fapping all over the place labelling him the potential best defender in the comp for the next decade.

He's not a backman. Due to how the 22 under 22 is picked he was only competing with the mids, and the mids have been very good.
