He's still on the rookie list right? How does that work with signing him to 3 years? Is there a restriction with how much a rookie can get paid?
No but there's a restriction with how much is covered under the rookie cap. The new deal will cover when he comes off the rookie list.

Assuming he's in the leadership group too.
Will captain the club one day.
Have been very impressed with his professionalism and maturity in a few of the media pieces. Conducts himself like an old head, not someone who was banging around the Poowong local league...

Great news. I was a bit worried that if we held him to his last contract on peanuts while getting him on board …… could put his nose out of joint.

And if he starts getting more attention from the opposition bring it on as others will step up. If we are a team that if you keep Jai quite you keep our midfield quite that would be a bit concerning.

This is great news . Another piece locked in!

I wouldn't worry about him recieving more attention . That was happening especially in the back half of last season.
Handled it pretty well I thought, plus we will have a bigger spread to handle the load over time .

Agree, not to mention an oppo player watching Jai is one less oppo player hunting or being in prime position to hunt the footy.
If Jai can get inside position at the drop of the ball no one is getting past him, and good luck to his opponent to hold him back from bursting away with it.
Reckon he goes another level this year, though that will be hard as there's only small levels left before he exits the roof of the building.

Duke has quickly become my favourite player and I think will become our best player, but I can't picture him as Captain. Seems too laid back. I think Day and Ward are more likely.

I think we have a great group of very young potential leaders just not a heap of senior leaders atm

Every now and then a young player shows leadership potential very early. Hodge is a case in point. He was very vocal from the beginning. Most new players just want to learn the game plan and their role and adapt to the pace of senior footy. Among the younger players, I reckon CMac might be the one to watch. I thought he showed glimpses of leadership in his first season - probably more than Ward.

Moore is the standout.

We aren't going to see a generational leader like Hodge for a long time IMO. Voss, Hodge and Selwood to a lesser degree, are rare leaders.

We don't exactly need a leader like that too if we have a strong core of leaders. I think Ward, Hardwick, Moore, Newcombe, Lewis and Morrison can become this group. Hopefully a few others can join them.

The only player in the AFL Comp who could effectively tag Jai would be ….. Finn Maginess
