Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: James Cousins

Been very hopeful on Cousins making it, worried about his kicking even when its not rushed it tends to be an up and under kick and with him lacking pace he needs to correct that. Sure knows how to find and attack the football though.

I think that clip shows the good and the bad of cousins. Desperate to win the ball. Hacks it forward.

Gee tough crowd here.
Cousins wins a damn hard ball, gives the fend off, and with 3 opponents around him, puts the ball on his wrong foot to advantage to create a goal.

If Hodgey had done that I’d be on my feet.

Contextually, I'm less disappointed with the hacking. Late in a very wet, heavy, physical game where making ground was hugely important. Did end in a goal after all ;)

Oh yeah in the context of that passage of play it was the right thing to do. It’s more that he does it too much. Comparing to Howe in the same game, Howe did hack it forward too but also he tried to be constructive and open up the game for others. It doesn’t come off every time but when it does it creates better opportunities than tumble punts forward. It’s what cousins needs to do if he wants to make the step up to afl.

Cuz has got some pretty tough markers here on Hawks BF.
I reckon he brings the best of Langers, but with far better situational awareness and some creativity and linking - mainly by handball.
No doubt he needs to get 30% better by foot, and I reckon he will.
Will be a serious inside player when he works out where he can grab an extra second and really hurt the opposition with his disposal.

Has a place in the game, hope it's with us.

At the moment Cousins is probably our sixth best inside midfielder. He has a natural ability to find and win the ball, however, is lacking in other departments.

The part of his game which lacks consistency can be worked on and polished. He is fortunately in an excellent environment to do just this. If Sam Mitchell joins the party, then that environment improves as well.

As Hawthorn supporters, we should not be so quick to discount a midfielder who currently sits down the pecking order. This may be conventional wisdom, but who can forget the classic children’s tale about the “Ugly Swan” who became Mighty Hawk.

I don’t think anyone has written him off. But if people are wondering why he isn’t playing senior football, it’s on display when he plays.

Oops didn’t intend to write this as saying we had written him off. More of a general statement as to what could eventuate if we are persistent and patient.

I understand you're a good mind for the analysis and game plan side of footy, but there wasn't too much at all he could do in that position with 3 port players bearing down on him and no receivers to get the ball to.

I don't think that clip shows the good and the bad, perhaps if there was a similar situation where he got the ball with options and tumbled it forward.

Who are the 5 better inside mids?

Sorry, I clarified in a subsequent post.

Further to that post, The way Moore, cousins and, to a lessor extend, Howe moved the ball out of stoppages yesterday virtually took our running players, and our players sitting outside the contest, out of the game. That doesn’t translate well to afl level. Thankfully Pittonet dominated the ruck contests because port were far more threatening out of stoppages when they won it as they linked up with runners.

Okay, I take it back then. Still your point in regards to that one moment was incorrect ;)

I think Moore is in fact the worst for it, Cousins is still young enough to rectify some of his poorer work with the ball though. He should be encouraged to use his hands more often.

Haha fair enough :)

Yes Moore is a vfl player because of it. I’m sure cousins has scope to improve and would be getting advice from the coaching staff for sure.

Cousins too good for VFL. Would be playing more regularly in 10 other sides.

Would probably be top 5 at Carlton or GWS. Better than their top 10 picks too. Yet he's on a rookie deal at Hawthorn, slogging it out for BHH.

Surely you don't mean the GWS midfield of Kelly, Coniglio, Ward, Shiel, Taranto, Hopper, Whitfield, Scully?

I think the bullishness may also come from what happened with Tom Schneider.

Killed it in the reserves, was average low to mid 30s possessions most games, just about the best player in the comp. Then... delisted. Right when we probably could have used another midfielder too.

There may just be some worry about his effectiveness at the top level, mostly his disposal and athleticism. The club has show a willingness to let players go even if they are seemingly playing well if they don't think they can have a properly strong impact on the next level.

Bulltish. Schneider was never 30 + possession player. Averaged 25 possessions tops but couldn’t kick a jam tin. One of the most overrated rookies we ever drafted and never understood the hype for a small, slow midfielder who lacked penetration in his kicks.

Cousins is a different class of player by a country mile
