The bump he put on Rich that left Rich sick and sorry was exactly the type of legal but intimidating physicality we need in a young team.
There was nothing legal about it. It was late and irrelevant to the play, and was rightfully penalised with a down-the-field free kick. It was a dumb cheap-shot and when opponents do it to one of ours I'm out of my seat screaming for punishment.

We could give him credit to the fact that Rich had disposed short to a Lion in 30m of space so the action was extremely unlikely to cost us anything AND he significantly impacted one of the Lions key playmakers eventually subbing out of the game - but even when it was to our direct benefit, I still don't like that play.

There was another moment in the middle when, straight after a ruck contest, Lloyd ran through Neale and ?, bowling them both over. He fumbled the ball (seemed more interested in taking bodies), but didn't infringe and cleared a path for a team-mate to swoop in and clear the ball. THAT is effective use of his size and intimidation. Crash packs, tackle and spoil hard, block opponents and run through opponents at the contest to clear a path. Don't snipe someone 10m off the ball - that's not how we do it at Hawthorn.

I loved the physicality Meek brought - more than any other game for Hawthorn. It's what we need him to do. Just not the Rich hit.

Saturday was the first time I have seen Meek really use his phyical attributes to impact more than a marking contest. You could just see him growing in confidence witheac contest and if he continues to do so our midfield is gonna go to another level.

I must admit I did not notice the free kick for being late. Sigh, I concede the point. But I still liked the intent!

Obviously we are playing two ruckmen but does anyone feel Meek has gone past Reaves this year? Feel he looks our number 1 at the moment.
Certainly is capable of it, but both are still babies in the grand scheme of things. Let's give them at least until the bye round next year (or even the end of next year) to see how they go, until then strap in and enjoy the ride!

Recency bias. They've both had good games, Reeves is playing through a bit of soreness at the moment so Meek has been taking a bit more of the load.

It changed the game in our favour.

Rich was the only one who had the class to get through our zone with his kicking. Once he was off they were out of ideas (outside of Wilmot going for a dash and run).

After McCluggage got injured and there was that huge stoppage in play until he walked off I was worried that it was going to benefit Brisbane more than us because at that point we had huge momentum. Worry not because looking back on the game now I actually think the stop in play benefited us more as it allowed us to reset and focus.

Hi again Folks, I was just checking in on Lloydy to see how he was going for you guys and delighted to see you're mostly happy with him. As I said in my post about him WAY back I thought he'd be best as a ruck and not a Ruck/Fwd and was a bit worried early in the year at how he was going but am so glad to see him hit his straps. I watched him on the weekend and against us and saw the guy I'd hoped he'd become. I think I mentioned in my initial summary that he was going to help around the ball and be a physical presence and the Rich hit was exactly what I was talking about. He's no sniper or Preuss type knob but I heard Sean Darcy describe him once as "pointy and rock hard when you hit him, he always hurts". I think Rich found that out.

Stoked Meeky is making a go of it and I hope you guys enjoy him for all but the games against us for a long time. Things are looking OK for you blokes which is good for you too, enjoy. Good luck the rest of the way.

Thanks for dropping by. It’s always good to hear balanced comments on new players from other supporters.

I think Meeky has settled in nicely and starting to play well with Reeves as a tandem.

Good luck with your team too.

Box Hill shone under lights, taking home a 39-point win against Frankston to cap off a fine home-and-away season on Friday night.

Lloyd Meek (3 goals, 26 disposals, 8 clearances, 41 hit-outs)

"After a disappointing performance last week, Meeky controlled the ruck and had really good connection with his mids all night. He was damaging in the air and was able to push forward and take some valuable marks and hit the scoreboard himself. To kick three goals and have 10 score involvements from 26 disposals as well as eight clearances is a great return from him. He was the dominant big man on the ground."

Monster.
Let's see some of this in the seniors next season!

16 games and as the year progressed Meeks improved, a bit more forward impact, read Goals and Marks, maybe clunk a few around the ground we might just have a second ruck. I look forward to the competition between Meeks, Kozi and Rama. Be amazing to have all three fire, another preseason for the three of them may be telling.
