I had hoped we'd nab him as a Kade Simpson replacement as I think his frame and game style were a lot like Simmos in his ability to read the play and hardness for a lighter frame.

Probably the best comparison I can think of in the current AFL based on frame, bravery and the way that they play.

A positive is that he has a bigger frame to fill out than Simmo, and has easily had a better first few games :p

The kids a gun. Was our best player again today, for how he played and took the game on.*

* not for stats

I have to pinch myself everytime I see this kid out there. He's such an exceptional decision maker and skilled young footballer.
I'm sure he may get a break at some point this season but can't see him actually getting dropped because of form.
Fantastic pick up Hawthorn Footy Club. His granddad would be very proud.

Such a similar player to Birchall, absolutely love this pickup.

Uses it well, goes in hard, decent height & looks to be better overhead than Birchall.
I reckon he’s actually more Fyfe than Birchall. Fingers crossed.

Is going to be a gun. Would really like to see him up on a wing for a stint. I was escorting them through Perth Airport the other night and he is taller than I thought aswell. Really polite young man aswell.
187cm apparently. Taller than JOM, Mitchell and Worpel.

Are we the only side without "tall" mids? Maginness 189cm

Howe at 191 would be our tallest if he was fit and playing
As it stands Hendo and Smith share that honor at 188

So, Howe aside, our tallest mids are our wingers?

Will be nice to see Howe back in the side
I think the issues in the middle go beyond size.

Day and Finn if they became successful mids could certainly change the dynamic, Day would bring some much needed foot skills into the mix.

Lachie Neal at Brisbane is proof you don't have to be big to be effective in the middle. McLuggage is probably Brisbane biggest mid at 187 yeah?

I think our issues are we have two many similar style mids and our setup is really stagnant

I think part of it is our set up at stoppages. We constantly seem to get sucked in to the stoppage, leaving oppo mids on the outside. This creates 2 problems:

1. If we win the stoppage, our mids are surrounded by oppo and can't exit. This makes for a rushed kick forward. Dirty exits most often create turnovers.
2. If we lose the stoppage, the oppo mids are clear or goal side, and can break away from the stoppage, allowing for an easy next kick.

If Day could be a first receiver in the future that would make a massive difference. He's shown some good smarts about getting to dangerous spots and he can hit a target.

We suffered these problems last year until Chad went into the middle. What is his % of game time in the midfield at present?

Birchall was one of the best kicks in the league, and was brilliant at setting up play and moving it forward - which are skills that Day shares with him.

But Birchall was never strong in the air, which is something that Day seems to be.
