If we'd got Ryder to shed about 5 kilo he probably had at least two years of quality ruck left in him.

Even in 2019 despite being shunted to the fwd line and averaging 15 less ruck contests, Ryder only averaged a couple fewer hitouts with HTA being basically even.

Gimme 32yo twilight of his career Ryder over prime Lycett any day. Lycett was a workhorse and put his body on the line hard for us but he just didn't have anything approaching the ruck craft that Ryder had.

Guy who rucks against chop out rucks, and first choice rucks who have spent most of the quarter being bashed into, is able to more freely direct the ball to our midfield. News at 11.

This is about as dumb as pumping up Sam Hayes dominating the ruck in the 4th quarter against a guy who played all game, while Hayes sat in the forward line doing not much.

Would argue they were all reasonable SANFL players and lacked opportunities, not they were rubbish footballers.
Yep I was going to add that. Williams I think played in at least 1 Centrals flag (but so did M. Stevens...) and Brosnan was always reasonably solid for the maggies. Harding I think played for West, but that's all I remember.

And a couple of rucks who seemed to be listed forever but was probably only a couple years. Barely got out of the reserves I reckon..

Except we can also look at their entire careers where Ryder was a more effective 1st ruck who built far better chemistry with his mids. Ryder was an All Australian and John Cahill medallist. Lycett was a physical, negating ruckman with a far lower ceiling.

The reason Hayes got pumped up on here despite his huge limitations is that he managed to actually find midfielders in their stride with his taps and the contrast to Lycett's defensive style was clear.

Because the results of the All Australian version of Paddy Ryder are totally relevant to the one that was struggling to get through games without having to spend the last half on the bench with a bad achilles.

Everyone trashes Scott Lycett for his performance in the second half of the 2020 Prelim. The 2018/19 version of Paddy Ryder would've been sitting on the bench watching Justin Westhoff ruck against Nankervis.

He spent a lot of his first run in the side, simply spiking the ball into space and then our midfielders going and finding the loose ball. Sometimes they get their hands on it, and we fly into our forward line unopposed. Yay Sam Hayes is awesome. Other times the opposition midfielders get their hands on the wild slaps and they fly into their forward line unopposed.

Its why we had such terrible clearance results during Hayes' games.
