Good get Crows this kid will be a champion mark my words. With a hard training resume behind him he'll be just what the Crows need I'm sure.

The best thing to come from this is he stays at Glenelg when he is not playing with the Crows.:thumbsu:

I heard that he does have attitude problems... He apparently went pretty ordinaryily in the Draft camp interviews along with Albert Proud. Both slipped. So maybe his attitude.

Sellar lands in Adelaide's lap

Adelaide recruiting manager James Fantasia emerged from Saturday's NAB AFL Draft well-satisfied at having secured prized local prospect James Sellar and exciting Queenslander Kurt Tippett with the club's first two picks.

Sellar had been talked of as a possible top-four pick earlier in the year before an illness affected both his weight and form and Fantasia could not hide his delight at having the 195-centimetre forward unexpectedly land in his lap.

"For us it was the first surprise of the day, he ticks all the right boxes," Fantasia said from Telstra Dome.

"He's a key forward, he's a 17-year-old with massive development potential, he's already played at senior level, he's got great leadership and character, he's just a quality young man and him being a homeboy as well makes it very nice.

"I never thought five or six months ago that we'd even get close to him given how our team was traveling and how he was traveling it just looked like he was a lay down misere for a top-five spot.

"Maybe he dropped out of contention for those top spots because of a little bit of a drop in form, but that was brought on through a couple of issues. He trained with us through his AIS program so we got a real close look at him in that regard as well so it all went pretty well."

The club further addressed an area of need with the selection of beanpole Tippett who is one of those tantalising basketballer-turned-footballer prospects that could turn out to be just about anything.

"Kurt in our opinion was a top-10 pick so to get him was very nice for us," he said.

"He comes in at 201 centimetres and gives us a little bit of support in the ruck, but he comes in as a genuine key forward. He played a year a year of senior footy with Southport in a premiership side … he's a great pick-up, a great lad who's got a couple of strings to his bow."

The Crows bolstered their midfield brigade with Vic Metro ball winner David Mackay at their third pick. Described as a pacy, long-kicking midfielder, Mackay played a pivotal role in the Oakleigh Chargers' grand final win this year.

Adelaide went mature-age with its next two picks with 24-year-old, North Adelaide centre-half forward Nick Gill and Norwood onballer Bryce Campbell.

"Nick Gill's arguably the best centre-half forward (in the SANFL) and he's a ready-to-go player," Fantasia continued.

"With Trent Hentschel and Rhett Biglands down obviously he supports that role, but in his own right he's just deserved that opportunity after a couple of years of really solid consistent footy. At his age he's still got plenty to offer and we're genuinely excited about where he might fit in.

"Same thing with Bryce Campbell, he's a bit more of a mature player at 22, but he's just a hard inside midfielder who we think can add to the group that we've got and is ready to go."
Fantasia said the loss of Hentschel and Biglands for next season had been taken into account when formulating the club's drafting policy, but he was confident both Gill and Campbell could go on to have long careers.

All of Adelaide's draft class of 2006 would be in with a shot at senior selection next season according to Fantasia.

"I think they'd all be able to push up at some stage, I think that's one of Neil's great strengths," he said.

"He won't put any limitations on any of those young men, so if they come in and can handle the level, he'll play them."

The good thing about Sellar is that he doesn't need at least 2 years to be physically able to handle AFL. He's a bit more developed than say for example Ben Reid who went at 8... Sellar can slot in if we are struck down with injury. Tippett is already AFL ready.. built like a tank. Can't wait to see how they go next year.

Why did he slip so far??

Not meaning to troll and no sour grapes but I was going to ask this very question as well. Stiffy any clues apart from this attitude rubbish being floated around??? I say this because I genuinely believe attitude can be turned around in the right environment, and Sellar being a kid, that shouldn't be too hard. The kid may well turn out to be an absolute champion but I would like to think that there is more to him slipping than just attitude.

I'm disappointed we passed on him. I think our recruiting team were only keen on the 'big 4' with our pick 5 and when none slipped, they went to plan B or C simply because they didn't see anything special in the remaining KPPs, or worse, they just went to sleep. What I can't understand is how Sellar passed thru Collingwood, St Kilda, Bulldogs and Richmond. They may have gone to sleep as well or there may be some genuine concerns with the kid.

I doubt Sellar will play AFL footy next year. They’ll let him develop with the Bays and hopefully he can cement his spot in their league side. If he’s really knocking on the door for selection then that’s a different story, but as he was one of the youngest taken in the draft he is still a fair way off AFL in my view.

Same situation with Tippett I feel. Sure he’s very well built but he’s only played footy for 24 months and is still learning the game. He’ll need to adjust to Adelaide and I highly doubt he’ll play for the AFC next year.

Apparently Richmond recruiting manager/staff found some flaws in him and Albert Proud. Something is wrong with him that we think is not that much of a problem/we can fix it. It could be that he just slipped so far because -His bad interviews-apparently he slipped so far bceause his bad interviews-same with Proud. He might've slipped because of his bad form and they were worried that he hasn't devloped as well as 1st thought. He was the best played in the U16 Championships last year wasn't he???? His height was a concern because he had been mainly rucking in juniors and the recruiters weren't convinced that he could fill a KPP role properly. I do not know why he slipped so far... Basically we will see how he turns out. Or he could've been rated highly but others were rated even higher???

Massive surprise, I expected Port to select him with their first pick. Very pleased earlier in the year was expected to be a top 5 pick, I agree with spice not sure why he dropped so low.

I guess the AFC is about to find out whether it was just about his attitude or not.

Hopefully he can turn into a great CHF for us.

I doubt they'll both play but they are at least physically nearly ready to play AFL. If we are struck down by injuries, it will be out of Gill, Sellar and Tippett to replace the injured. Can Gill play both ends or is he more suited to CHF...? And how shocking is his kick? WOuld he be one of the worst kicks at our club?

Well in the paper today it said Port were unhappy with his beep test results, which isn’t much of a problem really. He’s only 17 and that can be worked on. There were also reports Mark Williams was less than satisfied with him during the interviews. Put him in an environment he is comfortable with and that shouldn't be a problem.

I’m not worried though, he’s simply an outstanding talent plus he’s a Crows supporter so he should be hungry to succeed. I saw him in Round 1 in his SANFL league debut and he was incredible. Scored three goals in the second quarter and 4 for the half. I don’t buy into the comments than he isn’t a good enough KPP. He is very quick, extremely agile, has great skills and can take a great contested mark. Yes he fell away as the season progressed, but that was due to a mixture of things. The illness took it out of him, literally, as he lost half a dozen kg’s. It was his first season of league footy and was just a very hectic year.

He’s only 17 and I have absolutely no doubts that he will develop into an extremely high quality key forward.

An article on him last year. Was the best player in U16 champs. He can't be that bad.

not much of a surprise, call it Matt Leinert syndrome. Burgan predicted he'd go at no.6 or slip to no.14.

Well apparently he had a mild case of glandular fever during the year which was the reason his form dipped. Why he slipped, I don't really know but I am glad he did. Maybe his form in the championships was the reason he slipped all the way to 14. Maybe its the question whether or not he can be a genuine KPP.

This thing about him not interviewing well is an odd one because last week James Fantasia on 5AA said Sellar is a teriffic kid that interviewed very well and had some great leadership qualities.

He is a genuine bottom age player so for people to expect him not only to play SANFL seniors but dominate there is too big an ask. Fair enough if he was a midfielder but he is a KPP.

Also I think we had a bit of an insight into Sellar as he trained with us for a week as part of the AIS/AFL Academy scholarship. We would have found out a fair bit about the lad then I would have thought.

I am pretty optimistic about our picks.

While I do not know much about James, his interviews I have heard he seems to be a young kid who is excited about the club that he barraks for.

Its funny cause on ch.9 he said he was happy to be passed up by Port so perhaps that explains Mark Williams not liking him that much.

Hopefully we see him crack the Bays on a permanant basis next year and then 08 make his mark in the AFC forward line (well maybe 1 or 2 games this year would be nice :thumbsu: )

Yeah it was amazing, he was touted as the next Joe Montanna in his sophmore year, apparently the 49ers moved heaven and earth to try and get him to not do his senior year because they had the first pick. He ignored the draft and did his senior year and didnt do so well and dropped down a few spots and was eventually picked by the Cardinals.
