Toast Welcome Will Brodie

Will seems to get better and better with each game, he cops a buffeting at the bottom of the packs but is proving durable. One of our best pick ups ever.

He is one of those players who instinctively knows where to go to get the ball and dosen't try to over use the ball when in traffic. Once he gets into space he is showing a pretty good don't argue, fend off and a nice little touch of arrogance too at times.

One of our most important players.

When your parents (ie the AFL) have deep pockets, what incentive is there for being a good money manager? None.

As soon as the AFL stop subsidizing the club, their money acumen would improve. I’ve seen plenty of rich, spoiled kids have similar lack of money management skills.

Having a national competition is a major cash cow for the AFL, which financially justifies any subsidy the Suns receive.

Is Will Brodie the new Nat Fyfe.
His improvement this year has been a phenomenon.
The campaigner is a beast & a team player.
Could be leading our brownlow votes in a stacked team.

Thankyou GC. I forgive you for harley bennel.

This may sound very harsh, but I never saw the need for Gold Coast Football Club to begin with. I mean, if they were to be dissolved tomorrow, would anyone blink an eye?

It would have made sense when they were moving north to the Gold Coast. Existing list plus some concessions and we wouldn’t have two basket case teams we’d have one viable team.

True, if the goal is make money first and not be a fair competitive sporting event.

I have to admit I had no idea who Will Brodie was when we got him in the trade and given the circumstances I had no expectations for him at all. All I can say is I'm so glad our recruiters know a lot more than I do. He is a without doubt a star.

It's all been said but **** me, what a wonderful player to bring in at a bargain price and at the perfect age to compliment the team. He's humble and tough. Now if he can drift forward for a goal more often... 🥵

I like that the AFL are growing the competition. A national competition is really important. I can't say that I know how that should happen, but neither of those clubs have been able to dominate despite being loaded up with significant resources.

The most negative aspect of their existence, and it is a biggy, is that they get gun young players and fail to maximise their development. Brodie classic example, perhaps McCarthy as well.

He has been getting a lot of looks, just isn't accurate enough. When he starts slotting them through (probably when he is at his prime at 25) I can definitely see him finishing top 3 in the Brownlow.

Top 3 is a big call! He's played 31 games so we won't know his ceiling for a while. Will be fascinating to see how he partners with Fyfe

He is currently on the Lachie Neale trajectory. I expect his fitness to improve, as well as his goal sense and accuracy. As neale has demonstrated, career best form is associated with fitness. By the time he is 25/26 I can see him getting around 40 a game.

Is that 25/26 games for Freo? If so, I agree

Just watching the replay of the 3rd qtr and two striking plays shortly apart made me rewind to rewatch.

First was Brodie taking that body contact at full pace on the far HFF after that errant kick from Clark, while simultaneously getting the handball out wide to Tucker. I was like 'f**k that was good, who was that?' and rewound to check. I should have guessed it would be Brodie though.

Then there was that 30m Polly Farmer handball (Polly was before my time but I believe that's what the oldies call it) running off half back that I rewound just because it was so awesome.

I used to think Brodie was the best handballer we'd had since Hasleby, now I'm thinking he stands well out on his own as the best handballer that has ever played for this club.

And that, sir, is exactly my point. You can't expect a team to improve when you hold their hand and give them free handouts. My grandpa/grandma who grew up during the depression where crazy about managing their money because they had to. GWS and GC haven't had to. Freo didn't get it and they were arguably a more successful club during their first 10 years than GWS/GC has been. I don't disagree that growing a national comp is good for "the game" but I just disagree how to do it. You can't do it by enabling bad decisions (like the Brodie trade). There is no incentive to change when you get everything for free handed to you on a plate.

Let's look at it like competition for spots on a list. We're better now because everyone know's as soon as they screw up someone is waiting in the wings to come and take their place. We haven't had that in a loooong time and Freo are better because of it. If people are gifted spots (which people have complained about on this board for over a decade, especially with RTB), there is no incentive to get better. AFL clubs are the same.
