West Coast's plodder midfield - will it work?

Not this again......it was how he handled it pointing at the young girl and then the dance he did to rile up the Carlton supporters. He's a hypocrite

Tell the other half of the story -: Goodes had planned to celebrate a goal with that dance, yes the one that he'd been taught by a teenage Indigenous team. If the goal was kicked to the Swans end then he was still gonna perform that dance. In the same game Lewis Jetta had a dance to perform too, it was an Indigenous Swan dance .... thing being, Jetta didn't boot a goal that night.

I'll debate the inns and outs about the girl who was rightfully singled out .... if'n ya wanna do that of course .... nahhh, neither do I.

Hearsay. Fact is he did it to opposition supporters who weren't happy about it

I thought it added a touch culture to the game. If Visy supporters wanna get all hot under the collar about that then what about what Adam had to suffer for month and months ?? The game is too sterile and correct these days. We need players that add colour (no pun intended) to the game. Acka's hair style lol, Jacko's antics etc. Not saying Goodes is perfect and yes he coulda done things differently but the man should be remembered for being a great player of the game .... make that a Champion of the game.

Yeah once the public heard about it after the game it was fine, however during the game everyone was like wtf did Goodes just do. It looked like he ran up to the Carlton fans and tried to rile them up

Pointing at the young girl that racially abused him? And the dance? Please, spare me, not one person in that crowd even knew what it was, so don't tell me you can get offended by that.

It just happened to be after the fact that it was described as a war dance, so conveniently everyone was 'offended'.

Leg speed is an overated commodity imo. Sure its handy to have and you don't want to be super slow all over the ground but a football can move about 10 times faster than the quickest player so personally id take slick skills over pace every time.

He was born here, yes, but didn't play here....

So the West Coast Eagles played their home games in Melbourne when Judd was here? I don't remember the trek's to the ground being that long.

We're a decent team. Grand Finalists in 2015, finalists last year. A lot of people have us in their top 8 in the pre-season ladder predictors. We've got a potent forward line and a good defence, but the midfield has been our weakest area for a decade.

As we know Naitanui is probably out for the whole season so we have lost our competitive advantage in the ruck, and the ruck load will be shared by Lycett/Petrie/Vardy, none of whom are likely to threaten for AA ruck honours. We've added Mitchell so now have two Brownlow Medal winning mids in their 30s, both of whom would lose a foot race to the coach. 2018 is a different ball game as Naitanui will be back and perhaps Mitchell and/or Priddis will be gone.

Midfield rotation: Mitchell, Gaff, Sheed, Yeo, Masten, Redden, Priddis, Shuey, Duggan, Jetta, Hutchings.

Yeo (flaky, more of a flanker), Jetta (pace to burn but barely touched the ball in 2016) and Shuey are the only ones with any real pace. Even our more outside players like Masten and Gaff who get a ton of it aren't all that quick. Mitchell/Priddis/Sheed/Redden/Hutchings is a bit samey.

I'd expect us to line up with Wellingham, Schofield and Sheppard in defence, and Cripps and Hill forward. There's pace in those areas, and our tall forwards and defenders are fast for their size. Hurn is another one paced player but moves the ball quickly by foot.

Is this the sort of midfield group that's capable of matching it with the flag contenders? Is there enough pace and quality across the ground to make up for the one pace nature in the centre?
Who knows? Without Nic Nat things are much tougher. I think that Mitchell could help in getting the ball quickly to the speed outside, but he is likely to be tagged. Which means that Priddis or Shuey have a bit more freedom, so that is a plus.

Of more concern is that some of your players are getting a reputation of not performing well under pressure, or on the big stage. And worst of all I read somewhere that David King has tipped you for the flag! The ultimate kiss of death.

Ya only gotta look at Sam Mitchell (or going back some years, Diesel Williams) to note that slick skills are every bit as important as leg speed, if not more important. Neither are/ we're blessed with speed but here skills and delivery were second to none.

I love it how people just assume Judd is better due to;
Being Victorian
Media salivating over him for a decade
Playing for Carlton in a rubbish era
Being a pin up boy and being quite conformist
Judd was better, especially pre groin injury. He played many big games against Goodes and in my opinion came out on top, 2005 Norm Smith being an example. Judd was legitimately the best player in the comp from mid 2004 to mid 2007 when he hurt his groin and the Ablett's and Franklin's of the comp took over.

The other stuff about Goodes has been discussed about 1billion times so I won't bother.

If they can stay healthy and click then WC is a smokey for the GF. As in, if they play well I expect them to be there.

But then what do I know.

Major negative issue is that they are reliant on a few quite old guys to stay fit and in form. Good thing is those guys are champions. My range for WC is 1-6. Because their midfield is damn good. Losing NN isn't as big as stated bc very good ball winners.

agreed. in every sport technical ability > athletic ability all other things being equal
