Just herd on the Ernie Sigley show on 3aw, that there is word of the kangaroos to merge with western bulldogs.

Has anyone herd this, over have more info on the matter?

Please tell me that this is not true and just a stupid rumour.

Not that the Ernie sigley show has much creadibility in my books!!!

rumours as stupid as this one have been coming and going for as long as i can remember (since 1993 i think)

its just stupid IMO.
Two Vic clubs merging will not work IMO, due to cultural and Traditional differences.

Just remember if any mergers are going to happen they will happen in the next twelve months, before the TV rights are renegotiated, as once the AFL commits to a number of teams they will have to support them to the end of that contract, as they have this time around.
Kangas + Doggies? Hmmmm - don't think so.
Most likely scenarios are Doggies and Geelong, and Kanagas with either Carlton or the long held rumour, Melbourne. The Melbourne Kangaroos. I would have to buy a tartan rug and a Range Rover key ring - couldn't afford the actual car so would have to fake it.

Sigley is a Bulldogs fan, so it may just be some idea he picked up when discussing his clubs future with those within the club.

If there was any serious discussion of a merger, it would have to involve the boards of North Melbourne and the Bulldogs, and the AFL commission - and you can bet there would be plenty of leaks if the proposal was discussed.

Firstly, that sounds like a bunch of c rap.

But just for the sake of it, if we were forced to merge, culturally I'd pick the Bulldogs. Pretty close fit.

However the window has closed. 1997-2000 would've been the time to do it. Playing lists, membership bases etc at the best balance between them.

...

.........

.................

For what it's worth, when the Lions merger failed in 96, Doc was on Talking Footy saying he would immediately chase Melbourne to secure a merger if he was in charge of North. But times have changed.

Sigley is a Doggies man so I reckon that renders anything that comes out of his mouth on this topic null and void. North would only do it if we retained 90% of our identity I would think, the same fate that was to befall the Lions.

If a merge was to happen with the Doggies, I think they are a great fit with Geelong - both western, both have the whole horizontal striped thing going on, cats and dogs, you know, the list goes on. After that Hawthorn can find a team to merge with and it's done and dusted!

Ernie Sigley has to be the most uninformed, useless, lack of knowledge media personality not only on 3aw ,but on all outlets!
Cant stand the bloke purely on the fact he is so inaccurate on any comment he makes, particularly on Football.
I dont listen to 3aw anymore, since SEN started, but one afternoon,he swore black and blue that clinton grybas that Lou Richards commentated the 77 Grand Final on Channel 7 with......wait for it.........Sandy Roberts and.....wait for it.....Leigh Matthews was comments!!!!!!!
Well i have the DVD of both the draw and the winning Grand Final, and yes while Lou did call the game,i can tell you the other two didnt!
Sandy Roberts would have been 20 years old at the time and why on earth would a Hawthorn rover in his prime id say 22-23,want to special comment!!!!!

NUMSKULL ERNIE SIGLEY.....RETIRE

This rumor has been around for 20 years. Mergers are not part of A.F.L policy. Why would they give both club money as part of the C.B.F and then back a merger. The Melbourne Hawks put an end to mergers for ever. Clubs will either die or relocate.

I'd like us to merge it would stop all the crap we get every year, melbourne would be better than the dogs at least then we get a good team every second year. there would have to be a two mergers for it to work. so dogs cats would be the other but how would the dogs fans like traveling down to gellong every second week?

the other posiblity would be to go a 3 way with dogs and teh D's then we would be a super club and be even with collingwood and the dons 40k+members, how many members would drop off do u guys think? 20-30% from each club?

We'd be making prelims and they'd be losing them for us!

Wouldn't mide the Dogs to go back to the days of losing prelims.

We don't need to merge Envelopes, just wait & see over the next couple of years, I honestly feel our membership base is going to rise quite well with the kids of the 1990's growing up & able to buy a memberships. The other thing if a merger did happen I think your figures are around the wrong way, I feel only 20 - 30% of members of those clubs would support it.

Just my opinion though

The rumour is pretty silly, but as an interesting exercise who would fit in our team from their lineup?

I haven't seen a lot of the Bulldogs (they did beat us this year) - looking at their list for this week I'd take Darcy and West. I'm sure Johnson and Smith could fit in to our side for this week. I'm not sure whether Jade Rawlings or Chris Grant would make our side today.

Backs: M. Boyd B. Harris S. Koops
Half Backs: R. Smith C. Grant L. Gilbee
Centre: S. Power S. West J. McMahon
Half Forwards: R. Murphy J. Rawlings N. Eagleton
Forwards: P. Bowden L. Darcy A. Cooney
Followers: D. Cross, P. Street, B. Johnson
Interchange: M. Robbins, M. Hahn, F. Ray, W. Skipper
Emergency: S. Birss, R. Hargrave, D. Bandy

Round 17 combined North-Footscray team

Darcy for Porter
S Harvey and Sinclair out for West and Smith.
Maybe Mick Stevens out for Johnson.

A coin toss between Jade Rawlings and Corey Jones.

Am I being a bit unfair to the Bulldogs?

After calling him many things, Sam Newman on MMM stated last night that Sigley swears black and blue that he created the footy show idea. It was his creation and and he has never been recognised for it.

Along with this merger story, old Ernie seems to be coming up with some real good stories at the minute.

Not at all, and this is the Bullies problem if a merger did occur they would be a minor player in the new team, membershipwise, sponsorwise, playerwise and definitely on the coaching panel.

Very unfair I think.

Both sides have a lot of young players, although ours are a lot more developed than theirs, and we have a greater spread across all the field positions. If there was a merger and say 44 players were allowed for the new list, I think a lot of players aged 28+ would bite the dust prematurely.

I don't think Brad Johnson would be one of them though, and Jade Rawlings would be well ahead of Corey Jones in the reckoning.

I wouldn't mind harris, ray, robins, murphy, hargraves, bandy and cooney so whats that 9 out of 38 theres probably 3 other young blokes we don't know, I dont know if we could find 12 players we don't want about 5 would be easy but after that would be really hard to choose

If you want to pick the carcass of a dead & bleeding club and you take Robbins and friggen Bandy, I'm glad you're not in charge of our list!

The question was who would fit in to a team of 22 players for last round. (looking at the named teams for both sides). I know you've named 9 players, but I doubt there are 9 out of 22 players from our team against Hawthorn that would be dropped.

Who do you reckon out of those 9 would have come in to our side? Not many I bet. That's the problem with Footscray.

For the last round it might have been. Doesn’t mean they don’t have quality players longer term. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care for the stupid M word, but to dismiss their players based on the last round is short sighted (imo).
