I still haven't got my badge for winning it last year.

1. Haywood and Florent cementing their positions in our seniors team after another pre-season under their belts. They have the pace we are so desperate for. I'd love to see Ollie make it into our midfield but that could be another year or two away.
2. Melican and Aliir playing in defence. Having Aliir there should allow Mills and/or Jones to go into our midfield.

Rhys Shaw stepping up into a bigger role alongside Horse.
This is exactly what i have been thinking. Dew has been approached by the Suns? Playfair has commited to Saints. Shaw has coached neafl
team to 2 grand finals correct me if i am wrong. The point is that he is ready to step up to the next level. He knows who is ready in our reserves. Dont get me started on Playfair, average player, who suddenly became top level coach!

My heart keeps saying Aliir Aliir needs to play now. Down back and, if not there, somewhere. Find him a place.

My positives the obvious one, next year's an even numbered year so we at least in the gf.
Out of 60 even numbered seasons, we have made the GF in 10 of them. Losing 8 and winning 2

The continued improvement of the youngsters - Hewett, Papley, Heeney, Jones, Mills, Naismith, Newman, Florent, Hayward and Melican. All have come into the side and never really looked back (except for Heeney whose forgiven given he played throughout this year somewhat laboured.) They seem like a tough, courageous bunch of kids but more important they have a bit of mongrel about them. Paps and Jones are lippy, Mills and Heeney are tough as, and Hewett has stood up as a future leader. Can only see them getting better.

A big season from Buddy - this year he kicked over 70 goals, won a fourth Coleman, a seventh All Australian and equalled his career best Brownlow votes in a season. But it was nowhere near his best season, and it was no doubt cut short by our SF exit and his own injuries in the finals. Feels like he's really going to want to redeem himself a la 2016 when he returned from his mental health break the prior year. He'll also pass 900 career goals which is a massive accomplishment.

(Hopefully) the return of our guns? - Hanners played injured all year. Parker's first half of the season he looked out of sorts. Sir Dane injuried his arm and looked pretty average after that. Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh are also completely different players when they're carrying niggles. Hopefully all of these guys will come out at the start of 2018 fresh and pumped up, ready to improve on what were relatively disappointing 2017 seasons.

A balanced midfield - Credit to Horse he finally improved our midfield contingent this year, adding Heeney, Jones, Hewett, Lloyd and even Papley into the midfield mix. We needed that midfield depth because it's cost us in years past. But I felt it went a little too far to the other extreme. It's good to have those guys getting their hands on the ball, but we're still no doubt at our best when Kennedy, Hannebery and Parker are leading the charge, and there were probably a few too many games where our best players didn't have to be at their best, and that's not what you want. Hopefully Horse will find a way to make sure our guns are still dominating, but the second tier blokes around them are still providing able support.

(Hopefully) finding a solution that means we don't have to continue putting faith in blokes like Reid and Towers and Sinclair.

A red hot crack at the flag - after this year, I highly doubt we'd squander early games again. We'll come out breathing fire, and wouldn't surprise me if we were 6-0 or 6-2 or even better. A good start can really set up a crack at the premiership. Look at us last year, and Adelaide this year, it just gives you an edge over the competition and can drive a team to keep on winning. Given how much went wrong for us this year, it's pretty exciting to think how much could go right for us next year...

The one thing I'm not looking forward to is the melts on this board when Aliir Aliir is racking up All Australians year after year with another club. Seriously Horse, get him in the side.

Well I hate to say it but you're spot-on Caesar. Credit to you for not letting up for Aliir for the entirety of this year. But seriously Horse get him into the team.

It's especially frustrating because we went into the semi final with two key defenders. Last year when our back-line had a historically great year, we had four key defenders (Grundy, Sir Dane, Aliir and at times either Laidler or Marsh playing on talls). So not only do we go throughout the year one short in that area, we then go into a semi final TWO short in that area because Melican doesn't play.

It put way more pressure on Sir Dane to play one-on-one (where last year he was at his All Australian best playing a more intercepting, loose man role) and it also meant we had a pretty handy defender Aliir (even if he wasn't in great form in the 3 games he played this year) running around in the NEAFL, along with capable defenders Laidler and Marsh.

It was just kind of arrogant coaching I reckon. Like yes we have a great back line, but they are not the ******* Avengers. It only takes the opposition coach throwing one twist into the game (like occupying Sir Dane with Dangerfield) to then nullify the back-line's ability to function. Anywho this post has descended into a melt so mods feel free to do what you please with it.
