Top Father-Son Prospect Will Ashcroft Officially Nominates Brisbane

The Brisbane Lions are excited to confirm Will Ashcroft has formally agreed to join the Club as a father-son selection at this year’s AFL national draft.

It was announced earlier this week that Brisbane father-son prospect Will Ashcroft has nominated the Lions as his preferred destination heading into this year's national draft and most experts have had Ashcroft down as the number one pick for most of this year. It seems pretty likely that West Coast or North will make Brisbane pay full price for Ashcroft by bidding on him with the number one pick. The Lions also happen to be on the edge of the top 4 right now and seem like one of the legitimate threats to win the flag this year. Brisbane would be the first club ever to win the flag AND secure the number one draft pick in the same year if everything goes according to plan for them.

How would you feel if this played out? Last year we saw the Bulldogs make the grand final and secured father-son pick Sam Darcy with pick two and we also saw the Dogs make the first round of the finals in 2020 when they secured Jamarra Ugle-Hagan with pick one but we've never seen a team win the premiership AND get the first pick in the draft in the same year.

Can't say I really care tbh.

Vic clubs get the lion's share of gun players returning home from other states and nobody bats an eye. FS I am fine with in regards to Ashcroft.

Academies are a different story, however.

The AFLs daughter COLA Sydney going and buying Hawthorn's best player off them after just beating them in a grandfinal is something to actually be upset about.

This was a year after buying tippet from Adelaide on a massive contract.

Sydney's COLA flags should not even be counted imo.

The draft is meant to even up the competition. While the rule is a feel good story having a son follow in his dads foot steps fairness of the competition is more important. Imo top draft picks (top 10 maybe) shouldn't be allowed to be f/s selections

The way I see it, if we were crap, it would speed up our rebuild process (Look at Collingwood with the Daicos boys).

Doesn't matter if you're 18th or 1st, it's having an effect to some degree and it's available to every club.

The player also has the choice, look at Marc Murphy. I do not see the issue.

F/s is the best rule in the game. They brought it in so Barassi could play for Melbourne after his father became the first VFL player to be killed in WWII. I love seeing the likes of the Abletts, Silvagnis and Daicoses follow in their famous father's footsteps. It's a fans' game after all and it should all even out in due course.

Not every club. We (Gold Coast) and GWS still have to wait at least another 10 years before it'll be available for us.

It's a nice rule but draft integrity is more important. Top draft picks shouldn't be allowed to be f/s selections as they are meant to go to the worst teams to help them climb up the ladder

No. The father son rule is a great part of the sport, over time every club will benefit/disadvantaged by it in any given year. Obviously the newer clubs will take some time to get the benefits though

Traded Tony Begovich and Scott Watters to Sydney for it.

Also did something similar in 1996, traded Ian Downsborough to Port Adelaide for the first pick.
