West Coast coach Adam Simpson said he was powerless to stop Western Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli in an early contender for game of the year.
Bontempelli capped a best-on-ground performance with a game-winning set shot from 35m out to seal a famous victory.

“We couldn’t control Bont, we tried to tag him in the second half, he’s a very good player,” Simpson lamented. “We always knew if we shut one down someone else will pop up. It was a challenge for us, but I don’t think we took a backward step after halftime.”

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge praised his captain’s composure in a frantic finish.

“That coolness under pressure and understanding the stage of the game and (taking) seconds off the clock at that point is pretty important,” Beveridge said

“He showed great composure to be able to do that.

“He’s done it before Marcus; he’s lifted us.”

It was a case of accumulation versus execution with the ball-hog Bulldogs finally putting a winning score on the board against a relentless Eagles outfit.

The Dogs controlled the disposal count 233-163 in the first half and Bontempelli was the chief destroyer, but despite the skipper’s extraordinary start the home team led by just one point as the Eagles held firm under repeat fire.

With superstar ruckman Nic Naitanui gaining control, three consecutive third-quarter goals in time on helped turn ascendancy the Eagles way with a classy Liam Ryan finish from 40m on the run giving his side a 12-point lead with a quarter to play.

In a rollercoaster final quarter the lead changed several times before Bontempelli sent the home crowd into a frenzy to put a bow on a 30-disposal, three-goal afternoon.

Overall, the Bulldogs led the disposal count 407-312, using the ball at 81.3 per cent efficiency for the afternoon.

“You’ve got to get close to breaking even,” Simpson said. “To play your way to have to be competitive. As much as our guys seemed to be trying, they weren’t trying hard enough.”

For the 2-0 Dogs, the heart-stopping win sets up a Good Friday afternoon clash against the winless Kangaroos, with Beveridge determined to stamp out any complacency as his squad looks to establish themselves as genuine contenders for the 2021 premiership.

“Our players understand the challenge in front of them. It’s got to be your will to treat any team similarly. We play in such a tough competition and we go from playing Collingwood and the West Coast to playing the Kangaroos who haven’t had the best start to the year, but our mindset can’t change. It needs to stay exactly the same.”

Monumental’: Beveridge lauds Bulldogs’ progress after West Coast win

Western Bulldogs’ premiership coach Luke Beveridge has declared his young side has taken a “monumental” step in its pursuit of another flag after defeating a battle-hardened and experienced West Coast Eagles in a thriller on Sunday.

The Bulldogs stared down a brutal test from the Eagles at Marvel Stadium to win by seven points, despite trailing by two goals at three-quarter-time and five points with little over three minutes to play.

Even though the Dogs have now won the last two encounters between the sides, the Eagles had had their measure in the five clashes preceding them, not losing to Beveridge’s side after they were shocked at Subiaco in the classic 2016 elimination final encounter.

West Coast also have a good record at Marvel Stadium, and their precise kicking and aerial style – which is hard to stop given their wonderful forward line of Josh Kennedy, Liam Ryan, Jack Darling and Oscar Allen and the Bulldogs’ undersized defence – was not enough to beat Beveridge’s men.

“When the game was slipping away a little bit, and definitely at three-quarter-time, for our boys to collect their thoughts and come again is monumental for us,” Beveridge said.

“It is such an important win on our journey and the passage we’re trying to dig out.

“Against this team, they force you to play a certain way with their strengths. Obviously, you’re trying to play to your own.

“The application to the task, things were going our way at different times without maybe getting the rewards and as they do, the Eagles they’ll hang in there and they’ll force the issue at different points.”

He conceded some wins were worth more than others, and the way he spoke about this one suggested it fell into the more valuable category.

Bontempelli on target as Dogs edge out Eagles

“Our team is continuing to change and evolve and that 22 plus JJ [Jason Johannisen], who we didn’t call upon, haven’t played much footy together. We have got a couple key defenders, Alex [Keath] played his 50th game today and Gards [Ryan Gardner] still played under 20 games. And some guys in our forward line even haven’t played much footy together.

“There’s no doubt when the game was really on the line that group who are in the engine room and who are our prime movers, who play really important roles in the momentum of any game, really picked up the bit and forced themselves upon the end result.”

He singled out Marcus Bontempelli for praise. The skipper kicked three wonderful and crucial goals, the last just before the final siren to ice the game. He also had 30 touches (28 effective), plus 14 score involvements, five clearances and seven inside 50s.

“Just what he did in the last quarter … there’s no doubt her gave us really significant momentum and really swung us and sparked us into action,” the coach said.

The Bulldogs play the struggling North Melbourne next week but Beveridge said it was crucial his team remains single-minded in its focus.

“Our mindset can’t change. It needs to stay exactly the same. Apply ourselves to get the most out of ourselves,” he said.

“They [West Coast] are such a tough opponent. It is a very satisfying and rewarding day.”

In a season-opening where almost every game has been better than the average game fans watched over the past decade, the Western Bulldogs’ seven-point victory over West Coast will stand out long in the memory.

Trailing by 12 points at three-quarter-time, captain Marcus Bontempelli capped off yet another extraordinary individual performance when he kicked a set-shot goal late in the final term to seal victory for his club.

With rule changes designed to tire players out, Bontempelli surged into the forward 50 with ease and no one on the field could go with him. He marked in acres of space and kicked the goal.

West Coast led by five points with about three minutes to play when Jamaine Jones sharked a ball off the back of the pack and scored from point-blank range, but a set-shot goal to Aaron Naughton got the Bulldogs back in front, only for the captain to make sure of things soon after.

Marvel Stadium heaved with sheer and unbridled excitement for the entire game given how open it was at times, but also because it was full of critical contests and tense moments.

The Eagles had three chances to extend their lead at the beginning of the final term but missed them all and it allowed the Dogs to drag the margin closer and overrun their opponents, who were gallant to the last.

Naughton and Josh Bruce kicked six goals between them in one of the few times, if not the only one, in the past season and a bit where they have looked very good in tandem.

But without Bontempelli it is unlikely the Dogs would have won.

He had 12 first-quarter touches, was subdued slightly in the middle of the game, and then burst again in the final term to pull his teammates across the line under the Eagles’ onslaught, which included a devastating ruck performance from Nic Naitanui.

Ground Dogs v Eagle Air
The game pitted the Bulldogs’ run and gun, handball-heavy style against the patient and precise kick-mark game of the Eagles. One trades off a deep midfield and versatile medium-sized players, the other builds on the base of the league’s best aerial players.

So it was that the Bulldogs’ undersized defence went up against the tall timber of West Coast’s forwards in Josh Kennedy, Oscar Allen and Jack Darling.

The Bulldogs dominated inside midfield early but the Eagles remained in touch on the scoreboard because of the quality of their defence once the ball hit the outside.

They pressed high onto the Bulldogs ball carriers and forced them to kick inside 50 under pressure fairly regularly, their defenders then cutting the ball off.

The Dogs could not slice them up like they did Collingwood.

In this respect the Bulldogs’ first-half lead was predicated very heavily on midfield dominance, and how frequently they had general possession. As soon as the Eagles evened things up in the engine room – not even when they got ascendancy in the midfield – they were able to score goals.

That’s because the Dogs had so much trouble defending Ryan, Allen, Darling and Kennedy, all of whom found it way too easy to control the skies.

It all balanced out in the end and there was a fair bit of grit to go with the polish which saw them outlast West Coast.

3. WESTERN BULLDOGS (2-0, 115.8%)

What a cracking game that was on Sunday; and another example of the Bulldogs’ clear pros and cons. They scored very well, which was a great sign, moving the ball by hand at speed like no other club can do. Josh Bruce had a really strong game - we’ve been critical of him in the past, so we have to praise him when he stands up in key moments - as did Aaron Naughton. The problem remains at the other end; Bailey Williams was the match-winner in the final minutes, but their defence is still so exploitable. Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Oscar Allen combined for nine goals, and we don’t want to be cruel, but can you really imagine the words ‘Ryan Gardner’ and ‘premiership fullback’ together?

Bit harsh from foxsports, I can imagine it just as well as fletcher-roberts premiership full back, or Quentin Lynch premiership full forward for that matter.

It’s actually bullying to single one member of the team out and say that.

For a bloke who seems incredibly hard on himself this must be tough to read. At the other extreme you're at risk of drinking your own bathwater.

This is why players shouldn't read too much media commentary. Hard to avoid it though.

It's true the defence is exploitable, but why single out Ryano? Odd statement all together, really.

Really loving the Danny Boyd podcast. Both more relaxed than most footy podcasts but also way more inside info. I feel like I have gotten more insight into the club and players from two episodes than most other sources combined. Check it out.
Thanks for the reminder. Have listened to both so far. Really loved Toby as guest. Funny to hear how opposition teams treat each other off field and the protocols inside the kennel.

Don‘t you mean “Feathers” 😂

I watched Footy Classified anticipating a decent review of our win :p :drunk: :drunk: :drunk:
Cornes went on about our great midfield but contrasted that with the holes in our backline - went for about a minute.
Then in Caro's arrow she had a go at Darce [and a bit generally commentators who are currently linked to clubs] for biased commentary citing his reaction to an Astro mark. Pfftt

Yeah very negative show, never have anything good to say. I think Darcy is the least over the top compared to Eddie, Brown, Bremerton and a few others.

The best ex AFL commentator I like is Richo, I find him very fair.

Nick Riewoldt can also be fair at times

I reckon Darcy tries very hard to not be biased as a commentator. He did let his guard down in the closing passages of the 2016 prelim, but hearing his emotion in those closing seconds was great coverage (from a biased viewpoint admittedly).

No fair minded footy fan would object to those few seconds of unbridled joy. As you say it made great TV because of the emotion.

It wasn’t like it was for the whole match.
