If it’s actually our marquee game surely home team should be rotating, have we had home team privileges yet? From memory it’s been North every year - just keep it North & Dogs & rotate home team every year and let us build it into an event, simple. North do need to put on a better showing for that to happen though
Yes it's been North's home game every year since the game was introduced in 2017. There's been 6 games scheduled, of which we've been put on for 4 of those and the AFL kindly kicked us off and gave St Kilda and Essendon a turn in 2018 and 2019 respectively. 2020 was meant to be North hosting us but never happened due to covid. Unless we get to host occasionally and be involved every single year you can't call it our game. Why this is different to any other marquee fixture, who knows but it would be a fair assumption that it's due to the team/s involved.

As with all of the 'blockbuster'/marquee fixtures we've been involved in, we've never been the home side. We couldn't even get a home game round 1 2017 after winning the flag but were so lucky instead to get to play Collingwood away on a Friday night at the MCG.

The biggest issue I saw on Friday - and it’s way more obvious when you’re at the ground imo - is that JUH is involved in pack contests all the time because he, Naughton and often Weightman are all in the same area most of the time. If he was leading to different areas and the mids could direct it more effectively he’d be getting a lot more of the ball. The way we’re entering the 50 doesn’t suit him, as others have pointed out.

The forward line remains a work in progress, although it looked better with Bont and even Cordy in there for parts of the game.
Naughty & Jamarra have a similar play style - they’re both number ones who command the packs around them and want the ball delivered high out in front (obviously Jamarra hasn’t shown this ability at AFL level but it’s how he’s played his juniors)

They just need time to sort it out and of course Jamarra mostly needs to learn to play as a secondary target at this stage of his career and draw his defender away from Naughty even if that means he’s not putting himself in the best position to get the footy. It’s just game time game time game time that’s the only thing that can help, that’s why dropping him to VFL level won’t achieve shit.

You only have to look at Bruce & Naughty in their first year together which was a shambles, as again they both have traditionally played a similar role - but they sorted it out reasonably quickly and learnt to compliment each other.

Also another thing on this is our ball entry into the forward line is usually so slow, so many times you’ll see Naughty or Jamarra present on a lead leaving the other one the main target behind them but we neither honour that lead or take the option behind we wait and wait and then by the time the balls driven in then everyone’s just back in the home position flying for the same ball.

It drives me crazy. Even if you don’t like the kick to honour that lead, that is now the right time to kick long over the top of the leading player to the hotspot, seeing as Naughty or Jamarra has already drew a good defender out of that pack. I think what this is a lot of the time is they won’t hit up Naughtys lead but then they also want him to be the one flying for the high ball so they wait for him to reset, in this situation we just have to back Jamarra in and give him a chance - it’s what he’s there to do. Of course ideally we’d want Jamarra making most of those dummy leads leaving Naughty over the back but this is just something we need to work on

Yep.
Anzac Days - teams rotate between home and away.
Queens Bday - same.
Dreamtime - Rich and Ess rotate.
Easter Monday - Cats and Hawks rotate.
Round 1 - Blues and Tigs rotate.
Showdown/Derby - rotate.

GF - North game, and we're not even the guaranteed opponent!

It's laughable.

I guess the Ballarat games are our 'marquee' fixtures??!!

I never watch the Subday garbage on 9, but happened to flick across just now while having late breakfast (happy Easter everyone btw).

The dunderheads were debating whether North should have Good Friday taken off them because of onfield performances across 5 years - conveniently ignoring all the years Melb were sh1t but no one suggested taking Queens Birthday off them, or Blues sh1tting the bed in round 1 for 10 years.

But the most laughable was Lloyd.
"If you're going to take it off North, the ONLY team without a marquee game - St Kilda - should get it."

Naffan Brown agreed - that St Kilda as the ONLY club without a marquee game should probably been given a crack.

Others agreed Saints would make it a great spectacle, having King! I guess they could have the dwarf throwing fund-raiser for RCH, or nude pics of players texted to everyone I the crowd. What great entertainment possibilities!

Brown is a former Bulldogs player, and Lloyd is allegedly a great analyst - just curious to ask them what our marquee game is?
The dribble I heard on the ABC (who I expect better of) yesterday was just as bad. They suggested Norf should lose Good Friday due to bad performances and said that the Anzac Day game is always close, regardless of ladder positions because the ‘big’ clubs know how to perform on the big stage. I nearly vomited on myself in the car.

I looked up the Anzac Day stats.

26 games
4 margins over 10 goals
6 margins over 5 goals.

The general media narrative on this is just appalling.

Nearly as bad as The election coverage.

Thought Saints had a pride game vs Sydney?

Leave Good Friday with North.

QB is worse. 21 games, 4 margins of 66 or more (2 of them 80+), 8 margins of more than 6 goals

But the Big Freeze has pretty much cemented the teams (no problem with that), but it's not exactly a set of close games.

My point was we don't actually have a marquee game (we're not even the guaranteed away team on Good Friday), yet the bozos in the media think we do.

If North keep GF, which is fine by me, what is the marquee game we have an EQUAL share in?
Answer: none

(Also, tbh, IDGAF about St Kilda, their marquee game could be in Ricky Nixon's backyard FAIC, they're just a bunch of p1ssants anyway. Is Maddie's game considered a marquee?)

GF should alternate between North and us.

If it makes sense it won’t happen

I noticed he was well under the ball at each marking contest :(. Needs to get his timing right and not compete with Astro, who will do him all day. Kick the ball low to him on the lead and he'll grab it every time. High up it will be Naughton or Weightman. Good things will happen one day.

The "marquee" Good Friday game has got lost amongst the rest of the games of the round. There's now Thursday night, another interstate GF game and at one stage I saw or heard the Easter weekend advertised mentioning Thursday night's game and then one of the weekend games. No mention of the GF game/s at all (I'm sure it was TV advertising and it wasn't that the station wasn't going to be showing the game - unless they didn't want to take away from GF appeal). It was only a big deal when it started as it was breaking tradition & controversial. It's now just another games amongst the rest of the long weekend. I'm not fussed about it really.

Saints do have a marquee game Maddie’s match with Richmond

AFLMedia. Where you are only ever as good as your last game.

Quick, look over there. Oh, it's soooo shiny.

Shame on you for expecting anything beyond knee jerk reactions let alone forward thinking analysis of where the game is going.

Double extra shame on you for watching the 9 footy show when Songs of Praise was on over at the ABC on this the most blessed of days.

St Kilda would be the worst possible option

Agreed - and having all three fly for it - is really annoying when there is no one at ground level to collect it....

The thing with the ANZAC Day too is that the people marching get a free ticket to the game, or they used too, which built it up. It happens that a lot of neutrals are in the city at that time.

The Good Friday Appeals volunteers could be given a free ticket to the game, that might build it up.

It’s also probably the biggest holiday weekend of the year where a lot of Melbourne leaves the city Thursday night which makes it tricky - still 40k should be absolute minimum

Do we know the extent of Garcia's injury? If not, why not?
Less than 24 hours after Sloane hurts his knee we are told he needs a reco. 3 days after Garcia's injury and there's nothing in our media. Please explain!

Bulldogs comms on injury to player are opaque or non-existent. Shocked to be sitting here.

A bit to take in here, so here goes.
Re Jamarra.
Why don't the so called experts start questioning the fact that Number 2 pick Riley Thilthorpe struggles to get a game at Adelaide even though Tex Walker has been out most of the season. Why don't they also question why Number 3 pick Logan McDonald struggles to get a regular game at Sydney only back this week because Franklin is out injured. Two sets of rules with the media who like the low hanging fruit as click bait.
Re Good Friday.
All other marquee games are rotated with home side status except Good Friday, surely it's our turn. The media are happy to claim the crowd numbers are down meaning a change of clubs is needed but take a look at the start time of 4.20pm WTF???. By the time the game is fininshed it is too late to see family for dinner etc yet Anzac Day and Easter Monday games start at 3.20pm. It's almost like the AFL don't want this game to grow legs.

So, now I can answer my own question: damage to cartilage in knee (same as the reco in 2019). Will be assessed over next 3-4 weeks. Starts rehab now.

Western Bulldogs midfielder Riley Garcia is set for a stint on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in Friday afternoon’s victory over North Melbourne.

Scans confirmed the 21-year-old has damaged some cartilage in his right knee after landing awkwardly in a contest during the second term.

Head of Sports Medicine, Chris Bell, says the youngster will begin rehab this week before the Club decides on a return to play date.

“Riley landed awkwardly from a contest in the second quarter and jarred his knee,” Bell said.

“When assessed during the game he had some catching pain in his knee that impacted his function, so he was removed from the game.”

“Scans have confirmed that he has damaged some cartilage in his knee.”

“This is the knee that Riley has had issues with in the past, including having an ACL reconstruction in 2019.”

“We will progress Riley as symptoms allow over the next 3-4 weeks, and will work towards a definitive return to play timeline following this.”

Is this the first mention of it from the club? Very odd that nothing has been said earlier.
