Just wondering what every body's beef is with David Ellard. I have always been a fan. Tackles hard good on the inside, but uses the ball quiet well on the outside generally.. I think he has really stepped up in the last month or so, but have noticed on here (and the main board) a lot of negativity towards him, putting him in the same class as AJ. I dont get it, and wonder if I am missing something.

What are every body else's thought on him?

Not sure I agree with your contention.

My feeling is the majority think he is a pretty good player who has really improved.

When side is injury free he is probably a line ball selection if he has a bad game or two, otherwise most I would think are happy with him.
has done all the meat and potato work required of him
been at the bottom of every pack preventing the opponents breaking out
tackles all day
shuts down his direct opp well
always a threat to sneak a goal
Will never be the fastest, most skilled nor tallest. But as always works his butt off.
WA Blues own David Ellard should be applauded for a great work ethic and somebody who has stepped up and taken his chance the best he can

My thoughts are the midget is a bit of a quiet achiever and fan favourite, I dont think I can recall any fans really giving him a touch up at matches or on here.

You have to admire the way he goes about it, and people forget as a junior he was a small forward, I know who I would prefer out of him and Jeffy right now...Sorry Jeffy..

this is a big call, but in a few years I reckon he will be our lenny hayes. He will bleed blue and be respected for his hardness and the way he goes about it. I reckon atm we seriously lack this kind of figure head player.

I am Ellard's number 1 fan and most know that
It does thrill me he has earned a spot in the 22 but disappoints me that CFC has not had the development of players that make Ellard a good VFL player only. He should not be in the 22 with his faults but at the moment his upside easily makes it a no brainer

Ellard is a beauty.

There is no negativity about him being in the side, people are only saying if he was no longer in the best 22 we had, we would be a powerhouse to be feared. I think it is a credit to Ellard that he is seen as the benchmark for effort in the club.

You tend to think that if Ellard could some how merge with Gibbs.... What a player we would have.
Ellard works harder than most ever will, just wills himself on. I still wonder how he brings down players in tackles though with that body, sheer willpower.

one thing I have noticed as my only critcism and this is just from watching on TV as it looked better at Subi live: Ellard seems to not be working as hard away from the ball as he did last year. Maybe his opp also is not but once the ball clears his area he does not seem to get on his bike to go back or forward like he did. Again he may just be sticking on his opp but I know it is not because he is unfit. Must say Ellard was very vocal pre-game at Subi really trying to fire the team up and not using Shakespearean language at all. Him and Army seem to be the 2 that were really showing some hunger before the WC game. Maybe just being in front of family and friends but was interesting to compare with say his debut and earlier games where he was like a lil mouse. Not anymore

It does seem to be an issue with the team in general I think. For some reason, no-one much is running to create space or options. I personally didn't notice it with Ellard, but it does seem to be an issue in general, perhaps there is a bit of fatigue at the moment.

that is my concern - the attitude seems to be contagious. Spreading for a rebound which will come either way, getting to the next contest etc all seem to be tasks we are finding too hard. I sound like a cross of all the blokes on 360 I know but all we need is attitude and effort and we can easily get back in the fray this season

the weird preception is that for carlton to be a premiership contender we have to shed of players like ellard, armfield, curnow and mclean and replace them with lucas, bootsma, okeefe and buckly.
i dont understand why but some supporters feel that certain players have a right to be in the team over others. whether that be because of where they were drafted or how they play when there up and running.
what we must come to terms with is no matter how blue collar a player is if there done the job and doing it well they should line up everyweek.

fans and the media like to see Walker's big marks and Jeff's amazing goals not the hard tackles under a pack or chase down of an opp that Army and Ellard are known for

Not sure that many people have called for O'Keeffe to come in.
That being said though, given he may not have the pace to play on the wing, imagine if with his good sized body he could become a powerful clearance mid, who could roost the ball 70 metres when in space.
Just a side note.

This is what I don't though. Surely as an AFL player, you don't suddenly realise that you forgot to run to space the last few weeks. Is it as simple as laziness, or is there something else going on?

your right i was looking for examples to solidify my point, essentially what i was getting at was you need meat and potatoes, because without meat and potatoes your left with curry and what happens when you eat curry for a month..... Sh*t goes everywhere.

Ellard and Armfield are good honest hard working players. I've always liked the way they go about it. Both have great intensity and are in the top 22.

Joseph showed glimpses of what he is capable of in that final last year against WCE, like when he kicked that goal at half time. But the biggest problem of his game is that he doesn't back himself and gets too scared when the ball comes near him in defence - and this is a huge problem. Under no circumstances is he in the top 22 until he rectifies this, and it may never be rectified by him.

yeah he's a good solid footballer as other's have said. Not a gun player but not a poor player. Seems to line up on the oppositions best inside midfielder every week and does an ok job. Seems always improving, is a player that could benefit from some extra strength considering his job/role. Would like to see less of his kicks smothered.

Ellard has taken the steps he needed to this season, upping the number of disposals to midfielder numbers of consistently above 20 per game.

One of about 3 players to have improved from last year.

dropped from 2nd best tackler to 3rd behind Judd and an improved Mitch

kidding yourself if you think Judd is one of the better tacklers at the club. He'd be one of the worst
just quoting the factual stats mate. Judd was 1st last year and is 2nd this year. Numbers do not lie so take that anyway you want. may say more about the rest of the list than your judgement of Judd
