Where are we heading from here. What are peoples thoughts on what needs to happen next year?

Preferably i’d like to see scott resign after admitting he’s taken this team as far as he can. If he doesn’t, let him coach out his contract while secretly sounding out clarkson (who i despise), but at least he knows how to win.

If scott has to stay on another year, at least find a forward coach who can create forward movement patterns. Our forward line is stagnant and dysfunctional. It’s been this way for years and nothings changed. Simply not good enough. Find a new midfield coach to replace knights (or whoever it is) at the same time. Someone who can teach our mids how to deliver the ball into our 50. Bombing it in time after time (usually straight to their best intercept defender) is not a plan.

Next year i think we need to take a sydney approach. Bring in youth to re-invigorate the team.

Backline needs a major re-jig. Kicking sideways, backwards, out of bounds on the full, or rushed kicks that result in turnovers and goals is a never ending train wreck for us. Never play blitz back again. His kicking and decision making are not even vfl level. 2nd ruck/midfield only. Hendo’s been a valuable servant but he’s cooked. SDK to take his place. Krueger to take blitz’s place. Henry 3rd tall. Stewarts a gun. Get him right. Tell clark to put on some muscle, and work on his defensive side and he’s a lock in our 22. Kolo, injury cover only. How many goals does this spud cough up. Too mistake prone, terrible kick. Bews? Rather play tuohy but use as a lockdown i guess? Moc - get his hamstrings and fitness right. It’s ruined his year. Atkins? Like he determination but his skills are pretty average at times too.

Midfield. Guess we have no option but play stanley. We have no alternative, and we most likely can’t get one from anywhere else that will be good enough. It’s going to be a few years till one of our young rucks can take over. Maybe give him a heart transplant?

Menegola needs to be traded out. Gone backwards. Simpson- get his body right. Hope cooper stevens can get body right and become a player. Once again he’s listed as tbc on our injury list. What is it this time ffs? Maybe bundle our picks and try to get mitch knevitt? Draft the best mids we can with the rest of our picks. Higgins can gtfo. Cooked.

Forward line. Dahl is cooked. Replace with evans. Rohan? He’s the ultimate conundrum. Can look like a star and ultimate spud from game to game. Can’t rely on him in a final. But who can we replace him with? We don’t really have anyone. Close- get him to put on some muscle, and train him with a specialist small forward coach. Needs to learn some forward skills.

We can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result. But you just know scott is too stubborn to change and will double, triple, quadruple down and probably bring in some more boiled potatoes.

Rant over. Thoughts?

Great post. Sydney model please. Tip in at least 6 young ens next year and play em all year. Bombers also did this.
make calls on fragile players who are often injured and move em on. We have a history of spending say 4 or 5 years with such players then moving them and THEN they become regular players elsewhere (McCarthy and Cockatoo for example)- make the call earlier and put the time into others if our medical team aren’t up to it. Cooper Stephen’s is a classic example. Play our youngsters or they will go - Holmes, Evans, SDK, Krueger, etc. if Clarke wants to go home turn that into something decent or keep him and play him.
Change our selection process and the members of the committee - they are our weakest link.
Teams will have salary cap squeezes like Sydney last year and this year - what didn’t we get Allir for a 3rd round pick? Be smarter and react to opportunities.
Confront Scott and demand change from him and if he is not convincing with the plan to change a broken model then don’t extend him.
Confront the Board and management as well and make it clear running the joint to be consistently good and survive is important but not the main objective. Check that our social community and other goals ( all laudabl) are not blocking us in terms of focus support and time in winning premierships.
be real about how many players were ill or injured going into that game last night and never do it again.

We need another 2006-style review. There are many that need to be accountable for the laughing stock the club has become come finals time.
Everyone talks about clubs being a business, which they are. Well, in any respectable business of this size if a strategy of this long fails and doesn't produce results, mass change occurs.

We’re going out straight sets again. Richmond & Hawthorn won multiple flags...we won stats during regular seasons. Whoopie!
10 wasted years is the reality of the result. We have won a single QF in that time, and that was thanks to a player who now ironically plays for us shanked a kick after the siren.

I'm sorry, but Scott has had his time and then some. No contract extension, even if by some miracle of another world he won a flag this year or next (not happening) his time at the end of 2022 must come to an end.

Likewise any players who do not show up when it counts, they do not fit the culture that was set a decade+ ago, and arguably that culture is already gone, and will be possibly for our lifetime once the last two or three from that time retire, which isn't far off. Our squad is far too casual in their reaction to when results that should've gone our way do not. This "oh well, that's a shame" culture.

I'm sure it sounds crazy, but if Clarkson wants 2022 off, then the Cats need to find money to make an offer for 2023 and beyond. Who knows them better than someone who stole a flag from them, and denied them when it counted many times after. Or for someone untried, perhaps Stevie J wants to come home and show us what Bomber used to talk about in seeing the makings of a clever football brain when he focused on the problem at hand?

We aint doing nuthin.

Scott gets us to finals...that means membership sales.

Also more games so players take home more match payments.

Finals appearances also mean more Channel 7 games which means more sponsorship dollars.

The club only cares about the money.

Clarkson coached a team of generational players - Franklin, Hodge, Mitchell etc - to multiple flags when the completion was weak due to expansion.

Great coach when he has great players.

Since their last flag they’ve been bottom 4-6 and overpaid for the likes of O’Meara and Wingard in the hope they’ll bring another flag. You could compare it to our strategy bringing in Cameron and others - except we have GF and prelim appearances for show for it and are still alive this year despite how disappointing last night was.

If Scott was to move on, Clarkson would not be the answer. Nowhere near it.

I've been constantly in the rebuild camp since 2012.
But we have no choice to keep doing what we're doing for at least another year now.
We paid for and got Cameron. We're just gonna have to get another couple of old blokes again to have another shot.

Winning next week would be a start.

I think a review of game style is warranted but I think we've done that every year. Not sure any other coach would get any more out of the group tbh.

I agree, mostly because I think the coach is but 1 part of the larger problem.
And yeah I know how entitled that makes us sound, that finishing top 4 almost every season is a "problem", but here I stand.

We lost to them last year in qualifying final. Then went on to make it to the grand final. Not writing us off this year yet.

cats_09 isn’t this just the Chris Scott thread rebranded into a new one?

Where to next? Wait until we see what the rest of the season brings and then discuss next.
Why? We all know what’s going to happen we see it year in year out the club as a whole needs to change . A few taps on the shoulder both with the players and the staff is badly needed…and it’ll be nice if we had a board/CEO that will back the supporters rather than attack them

but I’m expecting more of the same as they only care about the financial side of things .

The club is sunk balls deep in medocricity

It doesn't have to be. I think there are positional and strategic changes we can discuss constructively without it just being unhinged ranting.

read the first post. It’s 100% just an emotional Chris Scott rant. It offers nothing different to the Chris Scott thread this one

The Sydney model? This isn't a one year fix.
Not saying it will be. But i’d take 2 or 3 years of finishing 6-10 on the ladder to rejuvenate, than to continually burn our future while being a finals laughing stock at the same time. This team will not win a flag. Ever. Time to try a different approach to rejuvenate.

Scott will probably want to bring in more broken down 30+ yr olds.

Oh look, it’s the chris scott is a great coach guy. How’s that working out for you. Must suck having to wipe that egg off your face every year.

I believe when someone that is an Alcoholic or someone in that type of situation ... to change, to get healthy ....the first step is to admit you have a problem.

Till that happens , then nothing will change , we will look for slight variations, , we will look at the positives and put aside the negatives as bad luck, and poor timing ..and things will be different ..if only we had done this or that. We will move from vodka to rum and think things will be different this time.

So where do we go from here? Id say till I hear otherwize... the club will continue down the path they have driven in the last decade. A decade of finals where we have failed to win there first final every single time.... bar the time Haw lost the game. Not once have we played as a dominant side...yet I doubt we will change. Why would we? Membership is up. Scott is getting plaudits from many media types. The club is acknowledged as being a professional organisation that is always there abouts. Why would the club change? To placate ingrates and ignorant so called supporters who dare to complain about our record?

When we have a season where we lose most games at KP, when we do not even make the finals, when we have fallen into the realms of a Carlton or North Melb ..then I could see a change being agreed to.

Till then. Bring on the rum.
