seems a covid-mindful shoot, not overly but it feels like they tried to film most of it within the one state
lot of new name faces, Wayne Blair (also directed the series), Benedict Hardie, Rob Carlton, Colin Friels, Alex Dimitriades, Harry Greenwood, etc. Like the first series, lot of thinly-veiled portraits/composites and a thoughtfully playful look at contemporary politics. Felt Rachel Griffiths had more to work with, with overarching intention it seems, mainly down to the changed circumstance, S1 she was an embattled center-right female leader wearing her pearls whereas here she gets to be a bit more herself.
kind of series that makes you sadly reflect on the limited prospects for indigenous actors overseas, a kind of disadvantage that almost entirely restricts them to our shores (maybe a more genre thing like sci-fi, or an ethnically ambiguous bestie, that's about as good as it gets). You are more likely to see them behind the camera in the states than in front of it (Catriona McKenzie made it in that sense as a television director). I don't think I've ever seen Deborah Mailman give a less-than-excellent performance, she is right up in that top handful of our 21st century actresses, and the chance of her getting a major part in a stateside awards drama are very farfetched compared to some of her white Aussie contemporaries. Rob Collins is also one of our best character actors in recent times. Some of this is reality, where a lot of English language cinema gets made and their almost nonexistent presence within that culture, this isn't a criticism for Americans but a reflection meant for fellow Australians, from our context it underlines the disadvantage indigenous actors have in securing a steady screen income overseas with the same talent. Deborah Mailman has to big fish it in a small pond. There are pros and cons to this, but it saddens me nonetheless, particularly with such a huge talent as Mailman.
anyway as dark and sinister as parts of this season were, still a welcome 'Black Bitch' escape from the ignoreguration

And another small thing - it’s probably been done before but the symbolism of the end of the rail tracks with the guys working on it to add further meterage in the opening scenes, really hammered home that the outpost was the end of civilisation and any apparent safety.
Damn I loved this show, wonder if they’ll do a S2.

Watching “The day of the Jackal”. I’m up to ep4 and it’s worth a look. Cat and mouse spy story is building nicely. Great soundtrack too.

There's a doco on David Lynch tonight on SBS Viceland and OnDemand, it's only short at 50mins but should be interesting nonetheless

Divided We Stand- German series set at the time of reunification in 1989
Elsbeth- Carrie Preston reprises her role from the Good Wife, loved her character enjoyed the first ep so I was interested to see whether she could carry a series with all her quirkiness akin to Monk
