1. I have no problem with a team getting priority picks. This is up to the AFL to eliminate if it brings the game into disrepute. So I give Carlton a tick regarding playing by the rules. People can rant all they like. They would do exactly the same thing.

2. The real concern I'd like clarified is whether Pratt is entitled to "set a footballer up for life" under the current rules. Can he create positions in his company (eg Directorships) in order to pay "elite" players significant amounts of money outside the salary cap.

Carlton fans can cry all they like about this but I for one, do NOT trust Pratt. His flagrant disregard for competition laws shows he is willing to squash competitors legally or illegally. AFL is all about fair competition.

Why did Judd say he wanted to secure his future outside of football? Did he negotiate anything with Carlton whilst under contract? Can Pratt do this legally within the rules. If so, I will shut up and cop it sweet. If not, he needs to be investigated. Pure and simple. Too much money and power. If he can set up a few "elite" players lives after football, you can't blame players trying to secure their families future. However, this almost becomes a case of buying a premiership. Great for the rich and famous, but that's not what fair competition is about (something Pratt clearly has no idea about).

Is this legal? That's my question for smart posters out there. Emotional blues supporters who are only going to come out with abuse, please put me on your "ignore" list.

Gee........Another hawks supporter having a go at carlton.
WERE CARLTON AND **** THE REST!!!:thumbsu:

i guess only time will tell. Surely you'd think Carlton would be smart enough to work within the guidelines this time. No-one really knows if Judd is getting anything extra out of his deal with Carlton, it's all just speculation for now.

So yeah I'm not really concerned, moreso interested. Carlton have made some big plays in the offseason so far but at the end of the day they're going to have to back these things up with some on field glory.

Thank you for your insightful contribution to the topic being discussed ...

Cheats never prosper.
I'm hoping they get to prosper after rehabilitating though .... otherwise we are both in trouble.

So what you're saying is the rules don't apply to you?

I'm of the firm belief that Carlton have in fact cheated financially to get Judd, but in saying that I do believe the AFL will look the other way.

Why? Because it cost them so much to bail Carlton out last time and nearly killed the club. There's no way they would want to instigate that again.

Well done Carlton on calling the AFL's bluff... which is effectively what's happened.

Good post:thumbsu:
Its exactly what worries me about Pratt. There is absolutely no point having a salary cap if its going to be compromised by having Daddy Warbucks simply come in & buy whoever he pleases for whatever it takes. We then end up with a mercenary system just like in soccer. Does anyone other than desperate Carlton supporters actually think thats a good thing for footy? Do we actually want to have a comp where your clubs only hope of success is to find a billionare to bankroll it? By all means its great that Pratt has saved them from their dead-beat poor position & will use his influence to gain more support for the club but that doesn't mean we should allow a compromise of the competitions integrity. I certainly hope that the Judd situation doesn't become the norm. I don't want to see a return to "chequebook football".

THE billionaire businessman Richard Pratt will endure the full glare of public scrutiny this week when the competition regulator delivers its damning evidence of price-fixing between the two biggest players in the $2 billion cardboard box industry...The statement and a penalty - expected to be as high as $40 million - have been agreed upon but the judge still has final say on the deal.

Howard says he's always found Pratt to be a generous man. The multi-billionaire can afford to be. Pratt has sure been generous to the Liberal Party, pouring more than $1.5 million into its coffers, three times the amount he's donated to the Labor Party.

A commercial arrangement with Chris Judd would be very good for any company. In these days of high executive wages I dont reckon you could really fault a $200k salary for this.

I would pay Judd that if he worked at my business in a high profile role.

Hmmm I wonder if he likes Chocolate?

I don't know that I have any problems with Pratt offering Carlton players jobs outside football. It's called networking and it happens in all jobs. Many people (me included) choose a job not just on the basis of the job itself but what network will be created and what other opportunities will come your way. It is too hard to regulate this.

What if a players family had a massive stake in a fruit business overseas. Can he not go to Geelong because, at the same time, Costa can offer him/his family money outside football?

What if a players wife was a shrink and they chose to play for the Hawks because, through Beyond Blue, Jeff Kennet could significantly add value to the wife's business.

I don't necessarily love it. I hate Carlton with a passion. But I can't see that it is all wrong

The scarier thing with Pratt is he has the legal backing and money to take the AFL on if they plan to do anything about salary cap breaches.

better then kicking them out of the club when the guy obviously needs help:confused:
Are you talking about the numerous chances Angwin had? Or are you talking about Whitnall and the fact that he can barely play anymore and so was offered an off field position instead? Let's be clear on exactly which set of facts you are glossing over in order to converse properly.

Cheers

Pratt is a self confessed liar, cheat and fraudster.
Fits in perfectly at Carlton, they'll win a flag under him
Geez I hope so. He is only supposed to be there for one more year, that would be a fantastic result.
