Seems the board was split on Option A (retain Rutten) or Option B (ditch him and make a last minute play for Clarkson).

Reading between the lines of everything he's said:
That he's been warned he'll be an outsider, that he'd need full support to take up a role, that the list is irrelevant, that there needs to be off-field alignment, that he's glad they're purging...
It's pretty clear that Lyon is saying he wouldn't even consider coaching Essendon because he has no faith in our higher ups and believes Essendon is incapable of fully aligning behind a coach.

Regardless of what you think of RTB, it's seriously concerning that he wouldn't even consider coaching us.

Haha I joked about that, he was going from saying to metaphor and back to an idiom. He'd be such a bad choice. I had a coach like that once, it was supposed to fire us up, but I'd struggle not to laugh. Especially once the whole playing group realised he did it. We couldn't look at each other whenever he was giving us a rev.
