Can we get Paul Roos out of retirement? If not maybe look outside of the AFL system for some coaches that know how to win and build winning culture. If all else fails get Ted Lasso
Why not as a future football director

Here's my current list of requirements for our next head coach

MUST have been an assistant coach for at least three years under Longmire, C. Scott, McRae or Hardwick

Must not have been sacked or demoted or moved on to a lesser position after working with those elite coaches. In demand coaches only.

Ideally should have been part of a premiership winning environment as a player or coach. Some leeway for significant experience under elite coaches.

Must not have been coached by Neil Craig at any point

Must be a current coach, not someone who moved into an admin role after coaching years ago

So Dean Cox, Scott Selwood, James Kelly, Ben Matthews, Corey Enright, Blake Caracella?

Couple of very decent prospects in that list

Another one is Andrew McQualter

Justin Leppitsch is probably the best credentialled previous AFL head coach in terms of getting a second chance

If we’re able to outline and deal with the systematic flaws in our administration and how we develop players, I’d love an untried assistant, primarily Rahilly or Cox.

If we’re not able to do the above ourselves (looks likely) I’ll settle for a name like Buckley that has enough pull to do the above himself.

You'd say no to Bucks?

You'd say no to Bucks?

People get very excited by him on the back of his media career. However what you don't see is the other current assistant coaches in the media and how they would perform if given a similar platform. I imagine many would be as good as Buckley.

His record at Collingwood is not great and almost all of his experience is at the one club

He wouldn't be at the top of my list

Nathan Buckley. He understands the game better than anyone. Knows what high expectations are and would command respect.

Would have a premiership if West Coast didn’t take 4 huge contested marks in a row before kicking a 1/50 shot.
Nicks would have coached finals too (and we will never know just how far into them he could have gone last year) if the umpires had given Keays' shot as a goal V Sydney instead of a point.lots of people have sliding doors moments

Yeah - apart from having a 52% win percentage, taking his team to a GF and 2 other PF (one he lost by a kick). Also made finals in 5 of his 8 full seasons.

Which looks good compared to Nicks for sure. He had enough time to prove himself at AFL level with the most amount of elite talent you'll ever see. I think his level is senior assistant.

Just for interest,

Another coach who had a 55% win record (same as Buckley), hadn't won a flag, but made 3 GFs came to Adelaide after 2 years in the media.

Not making any predictions on how good Bucks would be, but a few years out of the game isn't that much?? Or maybe it is nowadays?

He was at the Port Norwood game today.
A lot of talk coming from that function about him being at the Crows. Norwood would like him in some capacity back at the club but they know where he’ll probably head. He’s practically applying for a job here.

Fair. Until this...

Ooooffff...

Not so much his time out of the game, but his performances as head coach

Blight's record at Geelong was far superior to Buckley at Collingwood

Leppitch's credentials as an assistant coach are exceptional. Four flags as an assistant since leaving Brisbane with success following him.

Brisbane were shit before and after he was senior coach there too

I don't want him as senior coach but as far as failed senior coaches go you won't find a better record since being sacked

Made more GFs. Win percentage was slightly better for Blight if you only include Geelong, and not North Melbourne. Superior, but not far superior I'd say.

Blight took a middling Geelong team and did all he could to put them in a position to win flags except win flags. Four top four finishes in six years, three grand finals. Probably the best record you'll see from an unsuccessful coach.

Buckley took an actual premiership winning team and spent the first six years of his coaching career sending them down the ladder

Right place right time.

He was an assistant from 2006 - 2013 with zero success. Then joined Richmond and rode the 3 flags before joining Collingwood.

This is just laughable. You really giving credit to Richmonds 3 flags and Collingwoods flag last year to Leppitsch?
