Carlton have won 12, 13 and 13 games the last 3 seasons. Hawthorn ended up with 14 wins last seasons despite losing the first 5

Hawthorn were missing either their 2nd or 3rd best player as well
The original comment made was that the "pinnacle" wasn't that good which I assume is referring to Carlton's peak. From mid-2023 to mid-2024 Carlton went 22W 6L (including finals).

Our issue has been consistency within a season not our best football not being good enough.

Blues made a Prelim final in 2023 and were 2nd on the ladder for a lot of the season up until round 20.

I'm not sure the Hawks who finished 7th and had a big melt at Ken Hinkley after losing to a Port Adelaide team missing their 2nd best player peaked much higher than that.

Imo Hawks go backwards this year and miss finals, Blues finish top 5 due to an extremely soft draw, but aren't seen as real contenders - a bit similar to Port last year.
It doesn't matter where you start the season. Yes you made the prelim but were outside the top 4. You have never made top 4. History shows that a few teams have made a prelim from outside the top 4 and then disappeared. Yes we have had Brisbane and Bulldogs recently win the granny from outside the top 4 especially the bulldogs but they have been in the top 4 in other seasons. Making a prelim for a single year doesn't change what I said. You are yet to prove that you can be consistent performer in season. It's not to say you can't improve but I was responding to another comment about age and how that counts.

Oh day.

Shows the knowledge of Carlton supporters when they're questioning whether Day is in Hawthorn's top 3 players...
Id have Sicily, Newcombe, Moore and then a toss up of Day and a few others for the next wrung down.

He may be the most talented of that lot but he's yet to break out into a genuine star player.

2023 he was very good but compared to others in his position it's hard to argue he's in the top 20 midfielders in the comp currently.

Right... But neither have the Hawks?

At the end of the day list rating is a waste of time. No one knows about injuries, no one knows which name players may plateau or fall away, no one knows which no name could have a break out year. I guess it kills an off season but has no basis in fact or reality.

Here is an indication of the importance of Day. He doesn't play the first 6 rounds in 2024. Hawthorn lose all but one game during that period. The only win was North. Newcombe has a poor start as he is the focus of the opposition without Day. Day comes back we start playing a lot better Newk plays a lot better. Its no coincidence that Days return changed our fortune for the year and he was sorely missed when he got injured again especially against Port

Importance is different to best. Cripps and Curnow are better players than Weitering but I'd argue we'd struggle a lot more missing Weitering than we would either of those two.

Newcombe's top level is better than Walsh, has Walsh ever taken a huge final apart like Newcombe did against the Dogs?, he backed it up the week after by being our best player in a loss. Walsh is consistently very good but I rekon he can't go up a level from here whereas Newk hasn't reached his ceiling yet.

LMAO

Did you start watching footy last season?

Not much would split Carlton and Hawthorn's lists overall.
Would argue our depth is much better. The best 22 on the AFL website had these as our emergencies

Emerg: Luke Breust, Mabior Chol, Finn Maginness, Cam Mackenzie

That also didn't include Gunston, Ward and Morrison.

I would think all but Chol and Morrison would be able to fit in Carlton's best team

Gunston/Breust the only ones that would have a chance. No way the others get in imo

But I wasn't measuring whose side batted deepest from emergencies and beyond.

Carlton's best 10 players give more than Hawthorn's top 10, then that difference is cancelled out by what happens from players 11-30. So they end up pretty close.

I hate Carton but I can see them finishing top 4. If they don't cop any long term injuries to their key players. They also have a great fixture considering where they finished last season.

Hawthorn, should be up there if you believe in their upward trajectory but not sure they will.
