I've just identified that it was just a 20 year period that Carlton outperformed Collingwood - 1968 to 1987.

So for OVER 100 years of the history of the Competition, Collingwood have owned Carlton.

Anyone who has read any history of VFL is aware that Carlton's glory period was a result of former Carlton president giving them a cushy country zone, and they won 7 flags in 20 seasons as a result. The other team to get a great country zone, Hawthorn, they won 8 flags in 21 seasons.

Once country zoning was removed and they had to actually compete on a level playing field with a draft and salary cap not to mention proper list management and player development practices being needed, Carlton have been the worst performed side in the competition.

Unlike Carlton, Hawthorn have evolved and understood how to win in the modern era, and they have already once again built a better list and gone past Carlton.

A few crusty old Baggers wont care that Carlton will once again be mediocre in 2025, because they have their memories from 50 years ago when they once were a strong club.
