lol i'd love to know how you came to your conclusion. just completely ignore my post and repeat your original point?

why even bother..

The rugby link said teams had to qualify for the 2011 WC, no mention of the host nation automaticaaly gaining entry, same for cricket.

OH & the other idiot saying the Olympics, countries don't have to compete against each other for inclusion, but keep trying. :thumbsu:

Automatic qualification

Unlike recent tournaments (where all eight quarter-finalists from the previous tournament automatically qualified for the subsequent world cup) automatic qualification for the 2011 World Cup has been awarded to the twelve teams which finished in the top three of each of the 2007 World Cup groups (pools) [4].

that's 12 teams that automatically qualify..

did you even bother reading it? it also said that prior to the 2011 world cup the HOST, previous winner and previous runner up gained automatic qualification

Really? So why did the Olyroos (Under 23 Aus soccer team) have to play about 12 matches against different Asian nations just to qualify for the Beijing olympics, with the last one being held on a frozen pitch in North Korea?

I think the more pertinent question is, who is to say Australia will still have a national soccer league by 2018/2022. Interest in the A-League seems to have fallen away outside of Melbourne, if attendances are any guide. How long will team owners wear heavy losses on their investment? You can't be making money on crowds of 5k & the revenue from A-League broadcast rights isn't in the same 'ball-park' as AFL broadcast rights.

I did read it, never saw the host automatically gained entry, but if they did a deacde ago, it seems they aren't anymore.

the

excatly, except of course for the year 2000 when the olyroos didn't have to play qualifying matches because they had automatic entry into the olympics due to the fact that Australia was the host nation!!

I think you will find it is common for most World Cups, if not all, that the host is guaranteed to participate. The only reason that doesn't apply to cricket and rugby is that they go off seedings (or performances from the previous competition) for the first 8 or so qualifying spots and in every instance to date that has included the host.

Other examples are -

Hockey
"Germany (Host and defending champion)"

Basketball
"Turkey is automatic qualifier as the host country"

It's not just Football that has to qualify for the Olympics. Let's not forget sports such as Baseball
Eight teams will qualify for the Olympic baseball tournament. The host nation qualifies automatically. Additionally, two teams will qualify from the American qualifying tournament, and one team will qualify from both the European and Asian qualifying tournaments. The field will be rounded out by the top three teams from the world Olympic qualifying tournament.

Basketball
An NOC may enter up to one men's team with 12 players and up to one women's team with 12 players. The reigning world champions and the host country qualify automatically, as do the winners of the five continental championships (plus the men's runners-up from Europe and the Americas).
The best teams from the continental championships that did not automatically qualify participated in the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament or FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women to determine the final spots in Beijing.

Euro Handball
12 Nations will compete in the 2008 Olympics in China.

6 Places to be awarded directly

Host: China
2007 World Champion: Germany
Pan-America: Brazil
Asia: South Korea
Europe (2008 European Championships, 17-27 Jan 2008 in Norway): Denmark
Africa: Egypt

6 Places will be awarded via 3 qualification tournaments
Note: The teams in these tournament will shift depending on who wins the 2008 European Championships

And Softball
The eight teams in the Olympic softball tournament will qualify through a series of tournaments. China, as the host nation, is guaranteed one automatic entry. The top four finalists at the 2006 Softball World Championships will be qualified for the Olympic tournament. Finally, there will be continental qualifying tournaments for Europe/Africa, Pan-America, and Asia/Oceania, with the winners of each tournament earning a spot in the Olympic tournament.
