I myself (and I'm sure most of you guys) are hesitant when telling people that we watch wrestling because it always followed up with "You know it's fake right"? That has to be the stupidest line I've ever heard. It's as if someone says that they love the Harry Potter series and someone tells them "You know it's fake, right"? Well wrestling is the same thing, only wrestling involves a lot more physicality and athletic ability, giving it a more sporty feel about it compared to movies. It doesn't make sense. Why should we really be embarrassed to wear a wrestling shirt in public? Why should we be embarrassed to tell someone that we like wrestling?

Eh, there's always going to be that stigma associated with professional wrestling. You'll get the, "you know it's fake, right?" and "so you like watching sweaty naked guys grab each other?" comments.

I'm guessing it's because they assume people who enjoy it think it's real. They see people getting excited in the crowd, or exciting watching the tv, and wonder why. Just an inability to see it for what it is, I suppose. The answer is as obvious as it is dumbfounding.

I have no problems telling people I enjoy wrestling. If they give me a weird look, I just say to think of it like any other tv show. If that doesn't work, there's no point defending it, they wont get it :p

Whenever i tell someone new I watch professional wrestling almost every time I get this exact response.

" You know it's fake? UFC is better because it's real blah blah blah... "

This is when I change the subject and decide never to attempt a conversation about pro wrestling with them again.

Almost everyone important doesn't care that I like wrestling and have most games, but there was this one specific person who told me "WWE is fake, watch TNA" when the Original MEM was about. Jaw dropping idiocy.

Eh. As a man on who is now on the wrong side of 30, I'm too old to care what people think of me. I have no problems telling people that I watch wrestling - my job is hard, I simply tell people that wrestling is my mindless entertainment escape in the way that they play nerdy RPGs on the computer, or they watch Home and Away or whatever.

One of my favourite lines comes from the Mick Foleyism that 'the real world is faker than wrestling', or the Ken Andersonism that 'wrestling is real, people are fake.' If I know they watch Survivor or the Block or *insert talent show here* I will sometimes suggest that those "reality" shows are faker than wrestling.

I'm sure we all have a vice that others would consider embarrassing. Maybe wrestling fans are just a little more sensitive to it - especially those who are old enough to remember a time when wrestling was cool.

or if you're watching the show with a non-fan, an embarrassing segment/match is guaran-damn-teed to happen. :$:$:$:$:oops::oops::oops::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Funny you say that... I've just started seeing a girl.

She came round to my house on Tuesday last week just as the Bella/Springer segment was on :(

I had a friend watching, and that was the night Stardust debuted...

I just don't bring it up because I really can't be bothered getting into an argument or getting laughed at. If I know the person well enough then I'll tell them, otherwise I just don't want to get into the inevitable debate.

It's especially hard to introduce someone new to wrestling when you've been watching for a long time yourself. You know the conventions and the history of the business and particular characters, so you're more accepting of certain things than an outside who doesn't "get it" yet. Stupid is stupid, no matter who's watching, but the wrestling fan is more likely to persist and keep watching, whereas the newcomer is likely to be turned off, and simply turn off.

I think also being PG and the talent being under utilised would make it hard for someone new these days to get into it.

I know nothing about the WWE, but I'm channel surfing and I just fell on the channel. Oh no, this fat bloke with the beard is being under-utilised in this segment. I'm off. :drunk:
