Why can't Adelaide retain players?

A lot to do with the position he plays. When the midfield is being smashed it’s not easy to make a difference as a forward. Tex was the leading Goals Contributed player in the Afl

I'm sure the stats will probably refute it but it seems whenever I watch the Crows he can only kick goals in junktime - when the games on the line he invariably misses set shots with a relatively easy degree of difficulty. Similar to Riewoldt a few years back.

It’s actually quite logical. Currently he is probably our second best key defender, and about 4th or 5th best overall, for a team that is in premiership contention, and needing to pay the salaries of a premiership contending list, we simply cannot afford to do this, off the top of my head there are seven or eight crows who would deserve more than him at this stage.

However, barring injury and if he’s able to improve in one on one contests he will probably become the best defender in the league. Match this to the price Melbourne are paying and you are talking about his value being around no. 1 pick territory. Melbourne don’t have access to that so it seems fair to get two first rounders. Realistically for Melbourne that’s a fair deal, they have a slim chance of getting someone of Lever’s quality at those picks. If you’d ask the Crows if they could forfeit their next two first rounders to keep him, they’d do it in a heartbeat.

If Lever is worth pick 1 what would Dusty Martin be worth on the open market?

Ah no mate, this is just not right. He's actually one of the most technically correct kicks in the AFL, in fact I would suggest has THE best technique. Kicks more goals from outside 50 than any other player as far as I know too.

I’d give up two number one picks for him frankly.

The last 10 no 1 picks are Andrew McGrath, Jacob Weitering, Paddy McCartin, Tom Boyd, Jonathon Patton, David Swallow, Tom Scully, Jack Watts, Matthew Kruezer and Bryce Gibbs. Let’s say all of those are three year players, if you were the clubs that have them and were offered any of them and got Lever in return, you’d take it wouldn’t you?

Are you saying Lever is half a good as Martin? Lol, no.

lololol, dont understand why people are laying the boots into us.
pick cameron up in the rookie draft, get pick 18/19 in return.
a net gain in draft picks/position.
good business.
then compare us to melbourne
pick watts up with pick no.1, get a mid 2nd rounder in return.
a net loss in draft picks/position.
terrible business.

troll post.

the reason why carlton and melbourne are being unreasonable on the trade table is that they want as many high draft picks as possible so there is a better chance they might draft/trade someone decent instead of the spuds they normally get.

Nope I'd take Weitering, Patton (With no knee reco), Scully, Kruezer and Gibbs over Lever and it's to early to tell on McGrath.

Port seems to keep their players much better then Adelaide. Is it culture? Maybe no-one wants to live in Adelaide?
Perhaps they draft more country kids

I’d definitely disagree there, but you’d at least agree he’s in that category, suggesting you’d expect an early first round pick, Melbourne don’t have that so two mid to late first rounders will have to do.

I don't think he is worth two first round picks, Melbournes picks 10 and 27 should be enough to be honest.

im sure more would stay if we overpaid them.
This is the answer. They don’t overpay compared to what’s available elsewhere.

Absolutely nothing wrong with players wanting to be paid like others in. The league and good on the club for not buckling.

It’s not really a big dilemma, they’re still a good team.

Port have 140+ years history, club rooms, a culture.
Adelaide are a manufactured franchise.

I’m not trolling that’s genuinely probably the reason they can’t retain players.

When interstate players come to port I have heard port make sure they do everything possible to make the family feel welcome as well. Ollie wines family are at most games/functions since coming here. They are just as much as part of the footy club as Ollie is. It’s simple, keep the players happy in a good culture and you won’t have any issues.
The Crows have more history (And Premierships) than Port though.

Pick 10: Patrick Dangerfield, Phil Davis, Jake Melksham, Daniel Gorringe, Liam Sumner, Joe Daniher, Nathan Freeman, Nakia Cockatoo, Harry McKay and Jack Bowes
Pick 27: Andy Otten, Sam Wright, Callum Bartlett, Kieran Harper, Sam Kerridge, James Stewart, Sean Lemmens, Lukas Webb, Darcy Tucker and Zac Fisher
So the Crows give up a star (possibly even a league best defender) for a 20% chance at best of getting one in return?

You're not in a position of strength in this, he's out of contract push it too far and he could just leave via pre season draft and you get nothing.
As unlikely as that sounds it could happen. I did read something saying it could be Melbournes 2017 1st and 2018 1st for lever and a crow 2nd.
I'm a little bemused you're asking more for lever than you got for danger

We’d already gotten three all Australian seasons out of Danger, Lever is leaving before with really been able to get much out of him.
