Why don't we match the Swans' deal?

This ^^

The Swans realise that in 2019-23 $1.1mill a season will be a LOT less than it is now. Plus with the inevitable demise of the COLA allowance they want to lock in $1million of "outside the cap" player payments now before it gets scratched. The guys on SEN confirmed that even if COLA was scrapped all contracts that were formulated under the current rules would be honoured.

The AFL statement tonight says otherwise. It states that the COLA is under review and that Sydney may need to manage the TPP without it. Sounds like they are pissed.

Nine Year Deal For Buddy

Buddy Franklin's deal with Sydney will be for nine years, according to Triple M News' Duncan McKenzie-McHarg.
It's believed the deal will include a playing contract for at least five years and a mentor/coaching component for the remainder.

This came from Triple M site. It certainly makes it easier to match, then trade him to Sydney for something better than pick 18 at present.

So, can't we just write him a 20 year contract (4 playing, 16 as a mentor)? This will surely make it easier for Hawthorn to match them and make a trade?

Its time for Hawthorn to press there advantage now and bury these cola scab pricks.

Make no mistake, the $wans are committed, they cannot back out. Bud cannot back out and accept Hawthorns matching offer.

The “wage” under the salary cap that Hawthorn has to match is not the issue now, nor the length of the contract. The $wans have painted themselves into a corner.

The people saying we can’t match it are not thinking. The actual footy contract is the tiny part of this whole equation. The $wans are committed to 3rd party deals now, as is Buddy, they cannot now walk away, the nine years is a bluff so we don’t bring this to light, as there will be some very interesting deals that would have been done outside of the trading/free agency rules to have been able to make this offer in the first place.

The only thing that saves the $wans from themselves is the afl commission denying Hawthorn the chance to bury them through asking for their top young players and draft picks in a trade that can not now walk away from. This will be like the afl commission saving Freo from themselves in 2001.

Either way a vote of no confidence must be brought against this afl commission, and in particular the fat nitwit, from the clubs.

Sydney back out of chasing Buddy for whatever reason or is offering less if he goes through the PSD. No other club is willing to offer him anywhere near a $10mil 9 year deal. Buddy shrugs his shoulders, and accepts the offer Hawthorn have matched that they can't back out of unless the player agrees.

Minute risk, but still a risk.

No point, the veteran's rule is no longer a percentage, it's a lump sum of 100k/year (or so).

Buddy will not be able to show his face back at the HFC now let alone play for 9yrs he couldn't do it. He's painted himself into a corner. He wants to be in Sydney and one way or another that's going to happen. It's a no lose situation for us to match it.

I agree - the afl coming out and saying that the contract needs to be signed off on by the integrity and legal departments suggests they are not happy. I know this was always going to be the case but for them to actually make a statement about it is interesting.

I can't see the afl offering ambassador money when their intent was to get a high profile player to GWS not Sydney

I don't want the club to attempt to match or play hard ball in case it bites us in the ass - let him go, he obviously doesn't want to be at the club anymore - let Sydney manage him and the Bungy boys

So we don't have to match cola, marketing, 3Rd party and can put him on veterans list for 8 years.

Right?

Mentor/coaching component? Have they actually spoken to Buddy?

Yeah, I agree. Earlier today I was thinking lets fight this and match the offer but now I think lets just let it go and see what we can do with the money that is now freed up.

Also, Andrew Ireland on AFL360 just stated they are not going to be chasing the ambassadorial $ for him. There is a lot of marketing built into his contract. They expect him to play to 35 years of age. I think their big play is to prevent him going to GWS as they are obviously Sydney's biggest threat and they're happy to screw the AFL too in the process.

Just hearing now on afl 360 that this deal was orchastratated by buddy himself over 12 months ago...I could handle him going to gws for the proposed 2mill but for him to just turn his back on us the way he has for Sydney no less, has left me absolutely gutted...I know he's not the be all & end all of our great club but the way he & his management have dealt with this is absolutely deplorable on there behalf, I for one will be taking great pleasure in booing him every opportunity I get.....watching his highlights brings a smile to my face & now watching those highlights picturing him in a Sydney jumper doing those things for those flogs really burns deep!...#screwyoubuddy

Thankfully I doubt you're going to have to do a lot of that. Will be retired by 30.

One thing that stuck in my mind is something that Jeff Kennett said last year.
He said he was concerned about Buddy post football and that Buddy was looking for a long-term arrangement.

Maybe Sydney just listened to him more than we did and gave him exactly what he wanted. Long term job security.

On another note, the contract doesn't say it's $1M each and every year.
His last 3-4 years when on staff could be just $300K which would still be a tidy sum.

Wonder if he will cry when we boo him next year?

He is a massive risk for Sydney.

Way too much money for a half-forward 18 possession 1-3 goal per game forward.

I must admit, it surprises me that Sydney would go to such lengths to secure him. Perhaps he is of significant value marketing wise. I don't see him being a great fit with what Sydney have built over two decades. Perhaps he has given certain undertakings. Don't see how the Sydney style of game will suit. No doubt Longmire will have planned how to incorporate him.

Anyway, good luck to him. Just as Geelong moved on without Ablett, we will do so without Franklin.

He won't do any of that stuff in a Sydney jumper. How many genuine highlights did he have this year? The pies goal. What else?

What if we match it and he goes on the psd to swans? then we don't even get a comp pick.

No one is gonna touch him on a 9 year deal.

Our only hope is the AFL find this 9 year thing is dodgy and veto it. Then they may do a trade to stop us matching it.

The 9 years has to be dodgy in some way

In what universe is the AFL going to veto anything that helps the Swans?

Pardon my ignorance, but how exactly does the AFL determine that a contract has been "matched?" Do both the total money and length have to be matched? Or could you offer the same total money but fewer years, or more years for less money per year, and still have it considered matched?

I ask because we may be able to make a shorter but slightly more expensive contract (per year) more palatable to a potential trading partner.

Even if the terms must be matched exactly, are we absolutely certain that no other team would take on that contract in a trade? Due diligence would require the phone calls be made, surely?

If I'm at the club, I'm spending whatever time is left before the matching deadline talking with the other 16 possible trading partners. If you can work out a trade before making the match, and get an ironclad guarantee that it will be executed, great. You can do what they call in the states a "sign and trade". If you can't, you have to let him go, I think. People are saying on here that it's just a matter of a few dollars more than what we already had on offer (1.1 vs 1.25) but the total value of the contract would more than double from 5.5M to 11.25.

Move on guys. This is the new system.
They are getting the 2014 - 18 Buddy, not the 2008 - 11 version.
Send him on his way.
We have lost on this one but we will win on the next one.
The only question now is who we play on him Round 1 @ ANZ?
