So we looked good today, brought the ball back in the corridor and kicked well for goal.
But in the 3rd and obviuosly in the 4th quarters well fell away badly.

WHY?

1) Was it simply a case of one game too many to pull from the bag after falling behind at 3 qtr time.

TBH we were a tad lucky to win vs WC and got out of jail big time last week vs Hawks. I thought we ran out of run and despite the Arizona training, we ran out of legs in the last no doubt.

2) Tom Hawkins vs Ben Reid

Tarrant had to go to Hawkins after the 2nd contest he won early in his dominant patch. Tarrant was the dominant KPB in the first half, and Hawkins ended up turning the game in Geelong's favour and was stiff to miss out on the Norm Smith IMO.

3) Poor games from too many players.

Can't carry half a dozen or more palyers in a GF.

Tooves was awful. Fumbled all day and turned it over all day.
I am a big Toovey fan but that would have to be one of his worst ever games in the black and white.

Blair was unusually quiet for a game style that suits him. Contests - spoils - front and square, that's his game in a nutshell. Just didn't him enough around the contest today.

Dawes found it hard today and didn't do enough. Again could have got a few frees within range for holding but they didn't pay much today if u looked for the free which Dawes often does.

Maxwell - poor game from the captain. A shadow of his games in last years GFs. I thought he really lacked confidence and conviction in a couple of key contests in the 2nd half that were really costly.

Reid + Jolly were ok early but as the game wore on got shown up and were dominated in their respective positions.

Krakour + Wellingham were two of many to missing in the last quarter.

OUR FORWARD STRUCTURE:

In the end, apart from a brilliant display from Tow Hawkins, I believe this is why we lost the match.

In the 2nd half we bombed far to often to a out-numbered contest in our forward 50. A lot fo this can be blamed on poor kicking into the F50, no-one could win a contest down there, and far too many marks were taken by Geelong backs. This allowed them to build from half-back and they had the greater run and scored from these poor entries into our F50.

Anyway I thought we could have won that game, we had wnough of the play in the first half but Geelong to be fair were much better in the 2nd half. All credit to Geelong but I think the Pies let one slip there and hope they bring some hunger for next year

We lost simply because we took in too many injured or under done players, against a champion, fit and in form football side.

Anyone says anything else, they are talking bullshit.

We had Maxwell, Toovey and Dawes with hand injuries they never really recovered from.

We now know Jolly and Reid shouldn't have played, and Luke Ball broke down with a thigh/hammy in the 2nd quarter, right in front of us on the Southern Stand wing.

Add Heath Shaw who never fully recovered his All Australian form after being suspended, and Dale Thomas, who also never recovered his top form after his suspension, and you have the simple and plain reason why we lost.

If we played that game 10 times, with those teams, on those terms, we would lose 9, maybe even 10/10 times, we fought hard for 3 quarters but had nothing left.

I'm proud of our premiership defense, we were the best team for a lot of the year, but the above mentioned circumstances cost us a flag.:(

2012, Bring On Bucks.:thumbsu:

So no one should have played? Underdone and injured, why didn't we put in a fit VFL team they haven't played for a few weeks and are fresh.

You read what he posted?

He's saying that's why we lost, not that it was a poor decision to play the team we played.

...

But that's the problem, no side has enough depth to cover more then 2-3 of your best 22 being out.

Once we lost MaCaffer, Beams and Nathan Brown, you can't exactly go and bring in players like Wood, Goldsack, Sinclair, Buckley etc, we would have beaten by more.

We went in with what we had, it wasn't good enough due to the circumstances, but what were we supposed to do? Drop Heath Shaw, Drop Nick Maxwell, Drop Heath, Dawes, Tooves, Jolly, Reid etc etc?

Nope, we did what we had to do, and what happened was because of a run of bad luck, that's about it.

Two simple points, already covered.

1, Hawkins against Reid.

2, Didn't want it as much/hard as Geelong.

Not trying to troll so don't take offense.

I thought Dawes, Didak, Blair, Reid and Jolly were what cost the Pies the match. Those plus Swan taking far too much time to kick (those few times he got it) and then being pressured and kicking a horrible pass.

Fasolo should've started ahead of Blair or Didak, Wood should've come in for Jolly and Goldsack should've come in for Reid. I said all of this all week but Pies supporters assured me I was wrong. Dawes was horrible since he came back from his injury, maybe he just isn't that good? I guess we will find out in 2012. Didak should retire and Blair is borderline best 22.

Pretty much right...our luck run out but MM was outcoached today as well by Scott.

Scott reacted to Cloke quickly...we didn't to Hawkins - benefit of the doubt would be that there were circumstances that we didnt know about to prevent the change.

I totally agree with this. You can't have injured players play.Hopefully bucks learns from this game. Geelong wanted it more.Simple as that. Its not the end of the world. I thought i would cry and be devastated instead i was fine.I think that 2010 win helped me a little bit today whereas 2002-3 hurt more becauase we didnt win one since 1990.They definitely deserved it.Go pies 2012 :D:thumbsu:

At half time, I thought we were travelling better, but also that was balanced by knowing Geelong are strong finishers and had an easier game last week.

For some reason, we started bombing it into forward 50 after half time, whereas we'd been looking for targets in first half. That hurt our chances of ultimately winning a lot.

Using hindsight here, but Goldy > Fasolo especially taking two dubious big guys in.

Pods going down hurt us as well, Duncan > Pods for their team balance today...the game pretty much turned at that very point.

Five goals to nil in final qtr = they deserved it.

Why did we start bombing blindly into the forward line the last three games? I just don't get it. All season we have not given the ball up. Now we kick horrible punt kicks not even to a contest, just toward our end of the ground. WTF?

Spot On - Team was no where near 100% in the Finals and it caught up to us Today

Terrible Coached, move out mick, move in bucks.

WTF is it with these pricks? Seriously? You wouldn't go and say that shit to someone in the street or you'd be moved in to a ****ing morgue. So pull your head in you moron.

Cards all round. I don't envy the mods, having to worry about moderating in their current emotional state.

You started to lose when you coach joked about the round 24 game as something he would not think about.

Just as we did in 2008.

Was astonishing to see your club do it. Knew we had you when Mick laughed it off.

To me Collingwoods preliminary final ended like Stkildas in 2010. Yeah great to win but the damage to key players would prove costly. Yes Kosi Dal Santo Gram played but like Jolly Reid they weren't the same.

What has become an obvious trend that has crept in to our game is that the players are too unselfish, we tend to share too many handballs in close vicinity for the same result.

Thre is a lack of continous movement of the ball forwards and players spreading to dangerous spots, the amount of hurried kicks forward has been obvious for a while and the fluency has dissapeared.

I think the long year and injuries got the better of us this time and it definatley showed today.

Too many injuries at the wrong time of year. Finals came 5 weeks too early for you guys.
Didak lost his mojo.
Maybe having a coach with his mind on other things may have added .05% in the negative.
Didnt need Beams in the room looking like it was a funeral.

But injuries and form is the biggie. Everything has to be right to win a Granny.
Is set up nicely for Bucks though. goodluck to him.

Haven't read this thread yet but basically they were just better than us.

It's that simple.

Now we regroup and prepare for next year; bigger, better, stronger.

Well done you guys. Classic game.

In the end, the team with more experience knew how to handle pressure and endurance better.

Good luck under Bucks.:thumbsu:
