So we looked good today, brought the ball back in the corridor and kicked well for goal.
But in the 3rd and obviuosly in the 4th quarters well fell away badly.
WHY?
1) Was it simply a case of one game too many to pull from the bag after falling behind at 3 qtr time.
TBH we were a tad lucky to win vs WC and got out of jail big time last week vs Hawks. I thought we ran out of run and despite the Arizona training, we ran out of legs in the last no doubt.
2) Tom Hawkins vs Ben Reid
Tarrant had to go to Hawkins after the 2nd contest he won early in his dominant patch. Tarrant was the dominant KPB in the first half, and Hawkins ended up turning the game in Geelong's favour and was stiff to miss out on the Norm Smith IMO.
3) Poor games from too many players.
Can't carry half a dozen or more palyers in a GF.
Tooves was awful. Fumbled all day and turned it over all day.
I am a big Toovey fan but that would have to be one of his worst ever games in the black and white.
Blair was unusually quiet for a game style that suits him. Contests - spoils - front and square, that's his game in a nutshell. Just didn't him enough around the contest today.
Dawes found it hard today and didn't do enough. Again could have got a few frees within range for holding but they didn't pay much today if u looked for the free which Dawes often does.
Maxwell - poor game from the captain. A shadow of his games in last years GFs. I thought he really lacked confidence and conviction in a couple of key contests in the 2nd half that were really costly.
Reid + Jolly were ok early but as the game wore on got shown up and were dominated in their respective positions.
Krakour + Wellingham were two of many to missing in the last quarter.
OUR FORWARD STRUCTURE:
In the end, apart from a brilliant display from Tow Hawkins, I believe this is why we lost the match.
In the 2nd half we bombed far to often to a out-numbered contest in our forward 50. A lot fo this can be blamed on poor kicking into the F50, no-one could win a contest down there, and far too many marks were taken by Geelong backs. This allowed them to build from half-back and they had the greater run and scored from these poor entries into our F50.
Anyway I thought we could have won that game, we had wnough of the play in the first half but Geelong to be fair were much better in the 2nd half. All credit to Geelong but I think the Pies let one slip there and hope they bring some hunger for next year
