The best part is a carlton supporter talking about finals

The weirdest part is agreeing with a WCE supporter lol

I don’t know if they’ll make the 8. It’s such early days. I do know that with Hogan, Lobb, Conca and Colyer added to the team, it’s a very different side. Still have to find room for Connor Blakely (one of our best) and Darcy or Sandilands. I think the new structure suits Freo’s play as well.

Last year we had no Brad Hill for most of the season, and the same with Blakely and Walters. Taberner was out very early on.

With how close the teams are this year already, it’s going to come down to other factors like injuries, playing conditions, and pure luck.

I don't see many Freo games, so I was unsure where they were going wrong in recent times. One thing I did know was that Neale would be a big loss in the midfield.

So far, the loss of Neale hasn't seemed to have affected things all that much. I don't buy the line that Freo's midfield is better without Neale. Neale is a gun mid who would make every side in the comp's midfield better. It's like when Adelaide supporters said they were a better side without Danger.

Having said that, the net gain from losing Neale perhaps cannot be overstated. Hogan and Lobb have been excellent aquisitions and more than made up for the loss in other areas.

At this stage, you'd have to say that Freo is every chance to make the eight.

I wouldn’t have them in my top 8 at the moment
I’d have
Geelong
GWS
Collingwood
WC
Richmond
Essendon
Port
Brisbane

They’re in the bunch of teams that could jump in if one or more of those teams falters (which, let’s face it, is certain).

I’m very doubtful about Essendon being in the mix. GWS and Richmond could be struggling with injuries. Brisbane have only beaten easy sides (other than WCE in the heat). I think too much is being based on previous seasons.

If Neale is such a ‘game changer’ then Freo would have done much better. We’ve always had great mids like Fyfe and Blakely, but nothing for them to aim for in the forward line, especially after Pav retired. That was topped off with us losing most of our forwards to injury, early last season.

Last year Neale looked great when you went over the statistics on paper, but quite often his deliveries went astray. It could have been because he had nobody up front to kick to, or he was just a hungry possession getter. Either way, we weren’t winning matches because we had him.

Injuries unfortunately will shape the 8 more than the draw for every team i think.
I think geelong, pies and even port will make the top 8.
With carlton ,sydney ,north no chance realistically.
The rest is up for grabs really.
Plenty of teams with players dropping like flies so its gonna test the depth of clubs.

Freo definitely inproved a deficiency in their team with a better forward line it will go a long way to making the finals.
They have got ample midfielders to cover neale and with a fully fit fyfe firing look out comp.

As I said it’s more than likely one of those teams will falter and Freo are in the mix to take that spot. But which of those teams could you point to and say Freo will make finals instead of that team? Not ‘if such and such happens’ - because that could happen to Freo too. Brisbane is most arguable, but I’m happy to agree to disagree.

I think you’re still looking at Freo from previous years in your predictions. Freo would have easily beaten WCE the other week with Fyfe in the team. Both of their losses have been by one kick (hence the great percentage).

GWS lost to us last week in Canberra. That just doesn’t happen! GWS beats an out of form Sydney this week (with no Buddy) and suddenly afl.com is all over GWS as flag favourites.

In the past I would have expected Freo to lose last night, but this season they’ve been playing out their four quarters.

Depth is what Freo has this year, which they haven’t in years. They still have Sandilands, Blakely, Stephen Hill, Cox, Darcy, Griffin Logue and a few other players who want to come back in. Even Banfield and Ballantyne are missing from last year’s automatic starters.

I'm sure Neale would have loved to be delivering the ball to Hogan and Lobb last year. Who were your forwards last year? Taberner? Yep, he was your only decent one. Get rid of the potato, Kersten, and add two very solid tall marking forwards and the composition of your side looks quite different.

Don't kid yourself though, your side would be better with Neale in it. Thankfully for you guys, you've been able to cover his loss well. Your young mids are developing well and Mundy has turned back the clock, so that helps a lot.

Who knows, you may have a home sick (spouse) mid reconsidering your mob if you keep up the great form this year. Honestly, if we lose Kelly, I would prefer to see him go to Freo. It means we won't have to deal exclusively with West Coast and that numpty manager of his.
