Will we make finals?

The concept of "deserving" in sports becomes especially wrong to me when people start talking about it in reference to before the event has started. For example, "because we won more games than you during the season we deserved to win that game" or things along those lines. Then it gets into the toxic realm of entitlement. This is something that has historically been used against us as a small club by bigger, more arrogant clubs. It can become a way to belittle and keep "the battlers" in their place.

Did we deserve it? Meh we did enough to still be a chance and Carlton blew it. Its their fault and theirs alone they won't play next week.
No such thing as 'deserving' finals. You make it if your record is good enough, which ours was (by a bee's dick).

Did we 'deserve' top 4 after falling apart at the end of last season? Same story for Carlton and finals this year.

More than any group, we should know that finals are a different ball game. We can win games.

A wise king once summed up the idea of ''deserving'' nicely:

Moreover, I have seen that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor wealth to the intelligent, nor to the skilful. For time and chance happen to all.

True dat.

A clip of Triple M's call of the final moments of the Carlton v Collingwood game. Intriguing to look at some of the reactions in the adjoining radio booths when Elliott puts Collingwood in front. Andy Maher looks as though he is sucking a lemon. Watching The Front Bar this coming week will be interesting.

How good is it watch Maher in the background

After a rich, powerful Carlton taunted us for generations, welcome to our past. How does it feel? I truly feel sorry for their fans, but it is healthy they feel this, because, more than anyone, we can remember those days.
The arrogance of cheating has created 2 decades of pain, and now the stifling, choking fear of failure instead of the confidence of self belief. Essendon too is still climbing out of the cheating hole.
Ego, arrogance and entitlement are traits I hope we never display or live at Footscray.
This Carlton group hasn’t got that arrogance, but they are paying for that past culture that hangs like a fog over all they do until they shrug it off and win a flag fairly.

All I can say feel sorry for their tragedy "Pigs Arse".

As a rule I'm not a believer in curses, but when the Blues are tragically denied yet again and the winning goal to sink them is kicked by J.Elliott, you've really got to wonder if big Jack's excesses have permanently f@$&ed his wretched hole of a club.

Mick Malloy has plenty of material this week!

I hope he's ****ing relentless.

I'd be happy if they postponed all the other segments of the show and just had Mick roasting the living shit out of Carlton for 60 minutes.

Why not?

Remember 2016, you guys limped into the finals, looked terrible

Amazing what a 2 week break can do

In 2016 we had 15 wins pre finals (more than any club before at 7th), so the views on us at the time we entered were subject to a bit of recency bias to outside observers. The injuries had also cleared up by the time we played.

This time we are a clear 8th, have been poor all season, not really any glimpses of the form needed to get it done and no major injury excuses to pin it on.

Unfortunately very different!

Sadly, spot on. In 2016, we were really a top 4 side and went into the finals with an intact list, Murphy and Wallis aside.

I shouldnt encourage this, but I for one would thoroughly enjoy the melts if the Dogs somehow pull it off from 8th

"They shouldn't even have been in finals! Carlton gifted them the spot, they were the ninth best team maybe even worse!"

"Umpires, umpires, umpires - how else can you explain how such a shitty team did this!"

"Week off before finals just kills the top four teams - it's pathetic. Bulldogs gifted another flag."

"Luckiest team in the history of the comp - gifted the best player in the draft for two years when they were one of the better teams. It's bullshit!"

I mean, it won't happen because we are genuinely the worst team left on exposed form. Could we beat Freo? Yes. Could we win four finals? Incredibly low chance.

But yes, it would be thoroughly enjoyable :)

Laugh imoj doesn't do your post justice. You must have a satirical, just sufficiently warped, mind. Back down to earth, good post.

This is a great post, and it makes me think of just how irrelevant the VFL is nowadays. It is telling that “the big four” have struggled in the AFL era (post 1990). Collingwood in my opinion managed it best and Richmond are now leaders too. Essendon and Carlton are average to below average on many measures given their incredible resources.
Post 1990, the big four are WC, Gee, Syd and Haw in my opinion. With Collingwood and Richmond have the financial clout, and Richmond’s recent success demands respect.
On many measures the Doggies are punching well above our weight in the AFL era.
Long live the tragic history of Carlton and Essendon.

Bitter, warped. That aside, a fair analysis
