Yeah look, I got Foxtel at the start of the year specifically for Fox Footy. Having all but come to the end of the season I’m probably watching Fox League over Fox Footy at a ratio of about 3:1.
Rugby League was always my game of choice until I lost my club years ago, and AFL (Port) took completely over for me. Time has healed some wounds and I’m really enjoying the stress free environment of watching 100% neutral games of rugby league.
I don’t know what it is specifically I’m finding so irritating about AFL now. Gil and his 24/7 PR machine, annoying commentators who think they matter, the constant desire of all and sundry to always be seen as Australia’s #1 solid citizen, Port sucking, or a combination of all. But if Port suddenly ceased to exist I doubt I’d watch a game. I just don’t love the game as a sport enough these days. It’s become a bit of a chore actually. Bring on spring and the warm weather pls.

Port is the only club in the only sport that I've followed. I've never followed any other sport.

Two boys keen to latch on to what Dad likes and I'm struggling to get them involved. Trying to explain rules to kids shows how ****ing shitful the AFL has become.

Premier league has crept in to our household recently. To be honest, I can't see the AFL winning out. AFLX, AFLW, VFL-centric, Rules change mid season, media bias every which way you look... it's losing the focus on what made it tribal.

I've suggested to the boys that we each pick an EPL team and we watch those games together. Feels false and flat but it seems like this is the way things are now.

I'll be there...

Sometimes I contemplate a life where I don't care about footy. The problem is there really isn't anything else I take more than a passing interest in. Pretty sad really.

I’ve watched more Friday night league than AFL this year.

Roosters/Bunnies was about the best game of football of any code I’ve seen this year.

If I had to pick a team it’d be Souths, mostly because they earned a soft spot when they took News Ltd to court and won. Plus I have friends who were intimately involved in that.
Quite enjoying the way Penrith are playing this year. Finding I don’t even really hate Manly anymore now they’re down the bottom and struggling.

Also, the quality of programming, commentary, and general presentation of Fox League is streets ahead of Fox Footy. Love the transformation of Ben Ikin the player to Ben Iken the Bill Gates-esque nerd NRL 360 presenter.

The EPL as a league in comparison with the AFL is so far and away a better competition. Play every team twice?! Surely not.

I’ve been a lifelong supporter of the chooks for three weeks now. Everyone I know in Sydney hates them so they are the team for me. It was Balmain in a big way in the 80’s but West’s Tigers as an organisation and living in Balmain... yuk. I’ve actually moved out west to Five Dock where the Tigers Leagues Club is now and they are pretty parochial out here.

Do you still see John Elias at your local?

Yeah still catch up with him fairly regularly. Had a beer with him last Friday.

The merger did it for me. I was done. Balmain now only have a 20% controlling interest in Wests Tigers anyway, but Balmain brought all the supporters so the Magpies side of the merger know they’ll be next to useless if they try and rebrand to the Western Suburbs Magpies.

I see the old Balmain Leagues on Victoria Road now exists in dystopian, graffiti covered abandonment. It’s quite sad but also looks kind of cool.

It’s pretty funny the stories and lifetime of that building.

Benny Elias thought he had stitched up a deal to buy it for a dollar I think. He had all these great plans of “giving back” to the community if the community made him filthy rich by giving him prime real estate on one of Australia’s busiest roads for the princely sum of one dollar.

He got told.

As a youngster I wore his number 12 on my back. Turns out he really is a piece of shit, hey.

I haven’t been over there in years and until recently had no idea about the current post-apocalyptic state of the joint. There’s some great photos on that Lost Australia page.

Of course I'll renew.
My membership entitles me to say what I think and have it carry some weight.

Anyone who posts here and doesn't have a membership should pull their heads in.
Just on this (and I am a member), but do you need a club membership now to post on an internet forum?

He’s an odd bloke.

I lost someone close to me in October last year and he was the first bloke on the phone, do you need anything? Can I help in any way etc messages of support etc and you think what a guy.

then you remember he went to jail for shooting a bloke... then you remember Ryan Tandy....

Yes you do, Frodo, Macca, forza and the fishing guy are currently going door to door with IP addresses checking memberships.

Lol hang on. I’m talking about Benny Elias. I think you’re talking about John Elias. I don’t think Benny ever shot anyone. He’s just a grubby little businessman as far as I’m aware.

Hmmmm yes my mistake.

Benny is a little campaigner. Everyone hates the grubby little ****er.

Right now we’re on the same page.

Serious questions.

Interested to know if there are any examples throughout the AFL where a large membership drop occurred due to performance/coach issues and it's made the club sack a coach or at least helped push them along? Or any examples of a large outcry at a clubs AGM leading to the sacking of a coach?

I know its too small of a sample size, but the poll in this thread has 23-39% of people either downgrading their memberships or not renewing. How much of a total membership drop would be required for the board to consider drastic action?

I don’t think I could follow a league that only the same handful of teams have a chance of winning every year. At least with ports I get my hopes up only to be crushed by our own ineptness rather than some dude with a cheque book.

I wish I could turn off footy for a bit but my 5yo is a full on footy nuff. His enthusiasm for the game is infectious so that keeps me going.

At least I have The Baggy Green to look forward to, sigh.

Are you actually certain about this? 'cause I'm not.

Yeah, it’s not an even playing field but you can’t buy a flag like you can in most soccer leagues. I get where you’re coming from though. The league has a real early 90’s feel at the moment, it’s the VFL and we should be thankful we’re invited. I’ve always thought the non vic clubs should work closer together the to get a bigger say. Victoria didn’t invent ANZAC day, queens birthday, saints north on Good Friday FFS. But I’m just as angry at kochie for not standing up to them. We ask for a home game ANZAC round, **** that we should be demanding a game on ANZAC day.

Leicester say hi ;)

But, if choosing a team... just choose a good one. Haha

Think about the clout of a combined Eagles, Docker, Crows, Port, Lions, Swans and then wonder why this hasn't been leveraged.
It's because the AFL owns our collective arses.

Hopefully this is an isolated case but just found out a long term Port supporter who has throw the towel in since the collingwood game and bought a west coast membership and associated clothing (verified). Ken's tenure will well and truly go down in history one way or another.

What the ****?
Tossing your membership is one thing, but to immediately go out and sign up for another team is pretty gross.
I hope they never return.

Doubly gross because it's West Coast.
