True, but we have a new toy to play with, a thing called a forward line. We are going to have fun working out which type of batteries this think takes !!!.

Neale is a loss, but if we can get fit a fit Blakey, SHill & Fyfe + incremental improvement from Brayshaw, Cerra and the forgotten man, Logie. Yes, a lot of if’s, but’s & maybe’s.

The main thing is, no major blow outs.
No doubt you’ve improved the forward line. But unless you can get it to them they’re pointless. Hit the draft with picks you have, add 3 more good mids and in 2-3 years you’re back in the 8

Hawks won for mine. Freo 2nd. Pies did well to get beams back and look really scary.

Melbourne I am the most unsure about. Mostly because I am unsure of how good May is. 6 for Kolo and May could be huge unders or overs, I'm not sure. Losing Hogan could be selling him at the right time due to injury and mental health risks, or it could be a big loss.

Problem was that West Coast were expected to give up a 1st rounder, an end of 1st rounder, plus a future 1st for Kelly. That is enormous overs, and they were right to decline. They can just as easily get him far cheaper next year by not selling the farm right now, especially since they really don't need him next year.
> Dom Sheed stepped up massively in Gaff's absence
> Shuey is elite
> Yeo is elite
> Redden is approaching elite territory
> Duggan has potential to run through the middle when needed
> Gaff returning
> Ainsworth should improve further this year
> Masten just had one of the best years of his career
> Hutchings plays his role when needed, and is otherwise useful depth

With a list like that, I just don't see a reason for them to give up all early draft picks over the next two years for one players who arguably only thrived because he played alongside 3 of the best mids of the modern game
No. When you have the chance to win another flag you pay overs to improve your side. Bulldogs did it unwittingly with Boyd. Winning the flag vindicates this decision.

Same would have been the case with Kelly. Their midfield with Gaff and Kelly would ha e seen them strengthen their chances for the flag next year with Kennedy and Nic Nat nearing their end.

We needed run - Polec just finished 5th in Ports B&F and can run. Hall in a better side will offer more run through the middle and Pittard in an attacking side will add more run from the backline.

Tyson keeps Ziebell forward. He is a much better medium forward than midfielder. If his goal kicking can improve from the 35.29 as well as being a permanent forward he should be looking at pushing into the top 15 in the goal kicking comp.

I agree with Jay.
JAY CLARK SAYS: Super trade period for the Roos, despite missing Andrew Gaff. Aaron Hall was an absolute bargain and can light up games, while Jasper Pittard and Jared Polec add some electric outside midfield run. Dom Tyson will play 20 matches onball, helping keep Jack Ziebell forward. Plus they still have salary cap room for Josh Kelly next year.

GRADE: A
Agree with this. The recruits will improve the Kangas. They will be contenders when Tyson, Pittard and Hall aren’t best 18 however.

I think given the loss of Neale best case you’d be looking to break even with last year.
I am a bit more optimistic than that, and look forward to seeing how our emerging midfielders respond to the challenge. The real key to how well we do is injuries. Fyfe in particular, but now Hogan as well. We really can't expect to do well if as well as losing Neale we also miss Fyfe for large chunks of the year.

With both the Hawks and Freo you really need to wait on the fitness of Scully and Hogan and the performance of Wingard/Burton and Lobb.

Winners are Carlton, I have based it the one trade. Nic Newman will prove to be a fantastic trade. I think he will be a gun!

Loser are most of the Melbourne fans on BigFooty. They were ****ing pathetic throughtout the whole process, a few are still going!

Just an opinion of course but north dosent have any ‘x factor’ players other than Brown.Their recruits this year are either b or c graders which may improve their side a little but not top 6 material. If you look at the top 4 or so sides they have star quality across their teams:
Degoey,Viney,Shuey,Whitfield,Martin etc. just to name a few.

Adding Gaff to the premiership side certainly indicates they Eagles have a strong midfield, so no point selling the farm for Kelly when you're still favourite for him next year.

But I don't agree Kelly's form was improved by the Cats big 3 mids. If anything I think they stole midfield minutes from him and he would've been even better in a more balanced side. Of course Selwood's ball winning and Danger drawing the tag helped Kelly, but Redden or Yeo can provide that ball winning and Shuey is the guy to get tagged.

My ladder of trade week.
1. Richmond - after lunch with Lynch. Lost players who were depth players but have young players developing to replace.
2. Hawthorn - Mitchell needs help and Wingard is the answer. Scully for nothing, seriously WTF. Scrimshaw will do well for nothing.
3.
I think given the loss of Neale best case you’d be looking to break even with last year.
People need to study our last two seasons more careful.

Last two years we were a total 12-13 before the bye (most wins against easier teams but some good wins as well).

Then we dropped off badly after the bye due to injuries and too many young guys getting tired.

Plus our Sandilands,Darcy and Taberner were out injuried and we played the likes of Jones and Apeness who fitness levels are not AFL standard.

Plus injuries to B Hill, S Hill, and Fyfe, Blakely made us play too many kids.

Now Neale goes out and we bring in Hogan,Lobb, Conca, and Colyer.

This coming season we won’t have to play all the kids all the time and our ruck and key forward are a lot better.

We are a chance for the bottom half of the 8. Hard to beat us at home.

I think Collingwood is one of the hardest to judge. Bringing in Beams is a good move by the looks of it. I mean who wouldn’t want to add a gun to the team. My only issue is it costs 2 firsts and he is 29 at start of next season and the midfield is already their strongest area. No early bids on Quanor and Kelly will help in terms of trading this years first. But of course there are no guarantees.

I think Polec really addresses a weakness and will have a big impact in generating run. North always seem to prefer to move it by foot, but you need multiple dimensions to keep the opposition guessing. I get predictions he will be used off half back at times.

Crazy trade period.
You could mount a case on any of the following who won the trade period yet they had lost something as solid going the other way.
Melb-May>>Hogan.
Freo-Hogan>>Neale.
Bris-Neale>>Beams.
Haw-Wingard>>Burton.
On that basis you could say Ess as one of the winners as they gained Sheil and only lost picks(unknown kids at afl level).
Along with West Coast who managed too keep Gaff despite he was 99.5% off to North by most scribes and didn't sell the farm to get kelly this year.
Even the Pies trading in Beams with their window open i can't blame their rationale behind it.
Of the 1st 4 mentioned i think Freo did the best with the addition of Lobb.

May is a very solid key defender and Kolo is a good running half back when fully fit. But Hogan is a proven elite key forward entering his prime - it's a massive risk letting players of this calibre go.

Anyone who brings in quality players into their club is a winner without doubt.
When you make your team/club better with elite players- it's very hard to get it wrong.

Richmond- Tom Lynch
Brisbane- Lachie Neale
Carlton- Mitch McGovern
Collingwood- Dayne Beams
Essendon- Dylan Shiel
Fremantle- Jesse Hogan
Melbourne- Steven May.
Hawthorn- Chad Wingard
North Melbourne- Jared Polec

The only "question mark" I have is the Melbourne one---Jesse Hogan going out and Steven May coming in.
Hogan is definitely the better player comfortably.

North Melbourne have better depth than Richmond now.

Who would you you rather be?

It's not always about the depth, big reason but not the end of the world
Imo depth is the 'in' word for the AFL these days, but it really only applies if they are good depth. The problem with this is, most clubs target other clubs' depth with big pay rises, so depth isn't like it used to be.

And clubs really have to choose between an even deep spread or Spend the cap on the top shelf.

Just on Collingwood, we did cash in our chips but we still get the players we want in draft.

Richmond are obvious faves for the next flag.

However if Pies don't win 1 flag with Beams, this trade could be a worry.

Tigers midfield depth prohibits us from starting favs next year. Our forward and back lines excellent. Mids depth will be the issue.

I think West Coast's final offer may have even been too much. If they put in their future 1st in place of that future 2nd I think they'd be really harming their long term in favour of a slight boost to their chances of going back to back (and even that is debatable).

They really don't need Kelly, so offering anything over what their final offer was would have been disastrous

They will get him end of next year anyway for very little. No need to handover 2 1st round picks.
