The biggest winners, West Coast and Richmond easily.

Won premierships in the last 2 years, which is why we play the game to begin with.

Eagles add Gaff.
Tigers add Lynch.

No one of substance has left.

Each will contend again next year.

They did well given the shitty situation they were in. AFL needs give them more help because them being perennial cellar dwellers with mass exodus’s in not going to be good for the competition.
For me the AFL need to help fix it or fold it , my strong preference is they fix it and the sooner the better.
Vicious cycle of poor results meaning players leave, meaning more poor results and more players wanting out.

That original list just didnt work out. Patience and avoiding any wrong moves is key now. This draft will be the first of many they need to get right

North are the losers IMO...

I dont see Polec Hall Pittard offering a lot, Tysons strengths are not an area of weakness for North.

The big one is missing out on A grade talent the last couple of years.
I get it's hard, and I applaud them for having a crack, but the more stars that say no, the more ????? it leaves in the mind of future stars they target...

It's actually a difficult call, but they aren't going anywhere for decades yet. It looks like pour resources in now l, but that could change quickly if they rocket up the ladder and threaten existing clubs.

I'd be inclined to say they have draft currency, and quite strong local comp and Metricon crowds to build from. If they need money for facilities and infrastructure, or even specialist staff, then a grant sure.

Was thinking more along the staffing and administration assistance as a first step.

But your right IC it’s a difficult one.

I am hoping both new teams become well supported and followed .
I also like the way the increased draftable talent in the North is progressing , this can only be good for the game in totality.
Onfield succes will accelerate this process as will competent management both on and of the field. Premierships start in the front office .

I believe that a supporter base of 50,000 is essential for long term sustainability so marketing has a crucial role to play in the games popularity and and game development.

Just my two bobs worth .

WC losers, tried to lowball/bluff the Cats and got called.

Cats winners, get to keep Kelly for an extra year on low coin, won't lose any trade value next year.

I don't think WC tried to lowball the Cats at all. They offered up their first two picks in 20 and 22, but weren't prepared to give up next years first round as well which is what Geelong wanted. No need for WC to sell the farm after Gaff re-signed. Both clubs are taking a risk on where Kelly sits next year.

We needed run - Polec just finished 5th in Ports B&F and can run. Hall in a better side will offer more run through the middle and Pittard in an attacking side will add more run from the backline.

Tyson keeps Ziebell forward. He is a much better medium forward than midfielder. If his goal kicking can improve from the 35.29 as well as being a permanent forward he should be looking at pushing into the top 15 in the goal kicking comp.

I agree with Jay.
JAY CLARK SAYS: Super trade period for the Roos, despite missing Andrew Gaff. Aaron Hall was an absolute bargain and can light up games, while Jasper Pittard and Jared Polec add some electric outside midfield run. Dom Tyson will play 20 matches onball, helping keep Jack Ziebell forward. Plus they still have salary cap room for Josh Kelly next year.

GRADE: A

Agree, people under estimate Tyson as he is not consistent, find the right role and he can do well at North.

Polec is also underrated whos best is also very good, Pittard will be a good VFL player - not sure why you picked him up.

Just on Collingwood, we did cash in our chips but we still get the players we want in draft.

Richmond are obvious faves for the next flag.

However if Pies don't win 1 flag with Beams, this trade could be a worry.
And this year you had the comps easiest draw and will be tougher next year. Going to be a chalenge.

SA analysis

Adelaide - lost McGovern & pick 40 and future 3rd and 4th rounders
Gained - McAdam & Stengle & pick 13

Losing McGovern is a loss as he was an x factor forward. The hope is that McAdam and Stengle will replace that and add extra pace. McAdam will be really interesting as his draft numbers were something else a few years back but it never happened then he bobbed up in SA and has had a dynamic season with Sturt and deserves a crack. If he can get really fit he could be a steal. Stengle is the speculative punt as a betts replacement over time. Has the skills but does he have the legs?

We now go to the draft with 4 picks inside 21 and even if we don't look to trade up, will be able to take 4 very good kids and add them to the team with 'new recruits' Brodie Smith and Brad Crouch. If the injury curse can be kicked, I think that the crows can motor back up the table

Port
Gained - Pick 5, Pick 15, Burton, Mayes & Lycett and some 2019 4th round picks.
Lost - Picks 23, 30 and some later picks, Wingard, Polec, Hombsch, Pittard

I know from a crows perspective that come showdown I no longer have to worry that Wingard will have a day out and hurt us. Polec's outside run won't cause us real problems either. This alone makes me think they won't be as dangerous as they have lost pace and guile. They have gained what I have always thought they were lacking and that is a class defender to go with Jonas and Burton is exactly that - a class defender and a step up from Hombsch. Lycett is a big get as Ryder can now play forward for them and relieve in ruck more than have to carry it and with his foot problems it will help extend his career. Mayes is somewhat of a free hit for them and will add outside run. If he can get back to his best he could be a real get for them but like McAdam and Stengle for the crows - the Jury is out.

Where Port have done really well is their draft haul. Picks 5, 10 & 15 will get 3 great kids for them. There has been talk of them trading up further but in reality they would be silly to lose extra picks to move up maybe 1 or 2 spots when pick 5 is in all likelihood going to get them Connor Rozee who is their main target. They then still get 2 others inside the top 15. A great position draft wise.

All in all, I think both clubs have taken the hits and come out the other side with promise and very strong draft hands. I would give the crows a C+ overall mainly due to the strong draft hand and port a B for their strong draft hand. Of the 2 teams, I think the crows are primed to come right back after a very bad injury riddled year. Port are a harder one to get a handle on as I think the lost outside run and craft they have lost will be harder to replace and they may still struggle to get back into the top 8..time will tell

Gov may or may not be a loss, he has enormous potential but has only played half a season each of the last two years as his body isn't holding up, If gov applies himself at training he should be right if he doesn't he will spend a lot of time on the sidelines

yeah. i don't think its too bad for GCS> they will finish bottom 2-3, but i don't think they are gonna be there for a decade.
It's going to be difficult because we all imagine the picks/players they have access to in the draft, and how they can build to the future, but until they sort out the player retention issue, there's just no light at the end of the tunnel.

It makes sense for Gold Coast to pick the Kings at 2 and 3, then 3 quality mids/ halves with picks 6, 24 and 29. And, I'm sure people have scratched out a best 22 with these types of players in the team. But it doesn't mean much if they lose Martin, Swallow and Wright at the end of the year. They're forever chasing their tail.

Imagine a Gold Coast with Ablett, Prestia, Caddy, Swallow, Bennell, O'Meara, Lynch, May, Dixon and Matera.

I think West Coast's final offer may have even been too much. If they put in their future 1st in place of that future 2nd I think they'd be really harming their long term in favour of a slight boost to their chances of going back to back (and even that is debatable).

They really don't need Kelly, so offering anything over what their final offer was would have been disastrous

IMO you give up a future first every day of the week for a talent like that, and thrice on Sundays, we were in a similar situation with Beams, when you have the chance you just get it done.

I personally wouldn't have accepted what you offered, considering he's contracted on low coin for another year, the Cats weren't freeing up any cap space by moving him on so they were better off keeping him.

Pretty close to my view. Depends what you call supporters. I would say 30k dedicated members. Given we have a lot of casual members, supporters of other clubs who are resident in Sydney or Cannerra 50k paid members is about the same number.
Not sure about the Suns but I imagine a somewhat similar mix. This numbers are achievable for both clubs, it was always going to take time.

Problem was that West Coast were expected to give up a 1st rounder, an end of 1st rounder, plus a future 1st for Kelly. That is enormous overs, and they were right to decline. They can just as easily get him far cheaper next year by not selling the farm right now, especially since they really don't need him next year.
> Dom Sheed stepped up massively in Gaff's absence
> Shuey is elite
> Yeo is elite
> Redden is approaching elite territory
> Duggan has potential to run through the middle when needed
> Gaff returning
> Ainsworth should improve further this year
> Masten just had one of the best years of his career
> Hutchings plays his role when needed, and is otherwise useful depth

With a list like that, I just don't see a reason for them to give up all early draft picks over the next two years for one players who arguably only thrived because he played alongside 3 of the best mids of the modern game

Your spot on application and attitude is vital in all sports, if we had not snare Andrew Russell & Teague whom I'm sure was are of the strategy I too would have been sceptical.
However given our refreshed structure, I’m hoping and thinking positively hope Mitch McGovern will be a ripper for the Baggers.

Massive expectations on freo now.. they are predicting a 2019 flag on their board

Wont be able to hide behind the endless list of excuses
Haven't seen that myself. You must be a real avid reader of the Fremantle Board if you manage to to find a poster who predicted that.

The most ambitious prediction is for Freo to make the top 8, full stop, nothing further.

Most Freo followers want more wins and less blow outs. So 10 wins and no massive blow outs, with team improvement through the season, is acceptable. To get something like 12 and into the finals, would be a distant dream in 2019.

I think given the loss of Neale best case you’d be looking to break even with last year.

True, but we have a new toy to play with, a thing called a forward line. We are going to have fun working out which type of batteries this think takes !!!.

Neale is a loss, but if we can get fit a fit Blakey, SHill & Fyfe + incremental improvement from Brayshaw, Cerra and the forgotten man, Logie. Yes, a lot of if’s, but’s & maybe’s.

The main thing is, no major blow outs.
