Hill the least meh for me. Young with potential.
McStay and Frampton are the two head scratchers.

McStay out and Gunston in seems a good win for BL. Not sure what they see Frampton providing.
Needed a whipping boy for their BF posters - they got one guaranteed to deliver.

Strange dealings at the Pies but after this year you have to wait and see rather than doubting them.

They won't do it. GWS didn't do it for Diacos last year who is the clear best player of that draft so no reason why they would do it this time.
GWS did it for Darcy last year.

Don't give anyone a break, it may just be the team that narrowly beats you in a future important game

I just want to see 7 picks evaporate in one go to show what a farce it is that you can get the best player in the draft for that many junk picks

The two picks in the 40s May end up ok if you have a gun recruiting team. Not sure North even has a full recruiting team at the moment, let alone a good one. But at least you have some picks in those range to keep building.

And yep, you got more for JHF than Rankine, Jackson and Taranto. And so you should have. He was the player with the highest value in the draft by a mile. I’d prefer JHF to those three and pay more for him. As North fans have said over the past 12 months, he could be a generational talent. Just needs to get his professionalism right, which is a question mark.

1 for 3, 40 and 43 is an average return for a prized pick. But your club obviously doesn’t rate key position talent at the top end of the draft so some will claim that the downgrade means they get the player they always wanted at one anyway. That narrative will help sooth some and time will tell whether Brady got this right. Personally I think if there are three kids all rated the same you go with the tall, especially if that’s where there is a lack of talent on the list.

JHF for 2 and 10-14 is ok. They were never going to get 8, 10-14 and a player like Marshall like some fans were demanding.

Adelaide would definitely breathing a sigh of relief North didn’t take them up on their offer for him last year. Rachelle, Rankine and Dawson are three quality additions.

Hopefully pick 2 this year and 10-14 next year provides North with similar output.
Port are making finals and maybe a prelim?

Last year the picks in the range I gave were held by the following clubs and their finishing order…

11. Freo (pick 10)
10. St K (pick 11)
9. West Coast (pick 12)
8. Essendon (pick 13)
7. GWS (pick 14)

So yeah I think it’s totally reasonable they finish around the mark of the clubs above.

Our trade period was awful, no doubt.

Idea was sound to clear wage that was playing in the VFL, but went about it an absolutely awful way.

I can only hope they clearly have a target in mind for next year, as the club have said we aren't over the salary cap, and this was a deep cutting of salary for list improvements in the future. Time will tell, but at this point in time, the trade period was a disaster on face value.

Hawks clearly the biggest losers, but it was a move they probably had to make. Didn't expect them to sell their stars for cents on the dollar though.

Crows also a huge loser. Giving pick 5 for a inconsistent sook who can go weeks without impacting games is a dumb move.
They could have used that pick to improve the worst midfield in the league, yet they just added someone who won't improve them much at all.

Why didn’t Hawthorn move on some of these players in 2019- 2021, where they would have got a few top 25 picks for them ?

Also, who are they currently paying to reach the minimal salary cap amount ?

I look at Geelong’s list and Hawthorn’s and think how the hell are they within 12 % of each other ( or whatever the max And minimum salary caps are)

Is Winguard on 3.5 million this season ?

They were pushed back with bids for Daicos and Darcy. They aren't in the 2023 draft.

What did the Swans do to warrant an 8.5?

"Premiership coach John Longmire wanted to get his hands on Aaron Francis, who the Swans think has sharp closing speed and is a strong intercept mark. They watched behind the goals footage and revisited his past VFL form before swooping on the out of contract Bomber who should enjoy life out of Melbourne’s footy fishbowl. The Swans kept their Francis interest top secret so it didn’t distract their grand final-bound team and have signed the 25-year-old on a two-year deal with incentives for a 2025 contract. Could he be their next Ted Richards, another straggling Bomber they turned into an All-Australian? They’re still exploring ways to trade into the top seven picks at next month’s national draft. Francis is the 33rd player on the list and picks 14, 17 and 42 will complete their senior roster after a spring of long-term re-signings in spring. Two first-round picks off a grand final is a great hand."

Geelong and Richmond and then one of Port, Brisbane and Melbourne.

All these trades make 2023 really interesting. Geelong still start as favourites but do their ins (offset by outs (Selwood)) actually extend their advantage over the rest of the field. I think Richmond gain ground on them. Collingwood might too. Melbourne very intersting with Jackson and Hunt offset by Grundy and Hunter. Brisbane getting Dunkley and Gunston in, signals that their time is now.

So they poached a 25 year old who's shown **** all and the person who wrote this think he may be an All-Australian in the making.

Ok then.

The winner is Brisbane. Dunkley Ashcroft and Gunston give them a real shot at the flag.

Cats and Tigers also good.

The loser is Gold Coast having lost Rankine they then lost pick 7 and a former top 10 pick for nothing. If Geelong were genuinely into Bowes before the salary dump rules were changed they could have off loaded him and still had pick 7.

People forget that the Hawks got Amon at the start of the trade period and Cooper Stephens could be alright so I don't see us as the worst

In terms of playing impact, I think Richmond are the biggest immediate winners as Hopper and Taranto will turn the sides biggest weakness into a strength (at minimum it will improve significantly). I think it puts us back into contention. But we paid a significant and fair price for that improvement.

In terms of cost to return (e.g. bargain), then Geelong by a country mile. They picked up 3 handy and young players that will keep them ticking along in future, and managed to get pick 7.

Some of the losers, don't even want to mention. There's some seriously poor run clubs in this league and you wonder how people get/justify their jobs in these scenarios.

The herald sun - the same paper who employs Robbo and thinks hird coaching ess again is a good idea.

Sun are bottom, the bowes deal as is makes no sense.

Swans and plenty of other clubs keen to move up and trade for a higher pick. Pick 7 to high a price to pay to unload the contract. Reverse negotiating tactic.

We will take bowes for a top twenty pick and the suns countered offer is actually just have a top 7 pick. Gauged interest and then paid overs anyway.

We won't have 2 in the first 5 like last year - there will be 1 max in the top 10.
Yeah who knows.

But some that are experts project two gc academy kids to be in the top dozen at this stage. Who knows what the next 12 months brings with other kids development.

Have to expect at least one and maybe two to jump be top twelve each year (or fa compo for a top club losing a player) to slide natural picks back a couple.

It’s not unreasonable to assume the clubs that finish between 7-11 each year will have their first natural picks slide back to 10-14. That’s the mark I have on Port for 2023, but others will differ.
