Review Winners and losers - trade week 2024

Richmond have walked into the casino and exchanged nearly all of their money for chips. It's 8pm and they will be high rolling until the sun rises. Will their strategies see them leaving better off than they came in with?

I get that they've just about made the best of a terrible situation and they got great returns on every player that left, but the decisions will not pay off (if at all) for a very long time.
Richmond have invested in an ETF tracking the NASDAQ. Overweight growth in a high-growth draft. Maybe we'll return worse than we expect, but we've invested in a strong portfolio that has a decent chance to pay off above market.

Little worried about Carlton moving up in the draft... do they have their eyes on Fin O'Sullivan OR Sid Draper. There will be meltdowns galore if they pick Draper at 3 ahead of the Crows.

1.*Brisbane: Ashcroft
2. Richmond: Smith
3. North Melb:?? (Do North pick best available or go for a need here?
4. Carlton: O'Sullivan/Draper
5. Adelaide: Draper/Smille/O'Sullivan

Winners: Matt Owies (somehow secured a three-year deal).

Losers: Rory Atkins (no matter where he ends up, no one seems to want him).

How are suns losers?

Fixed our salary cap and probably the best its been ever trading out Atkins and lukocious.

Acquired 2 future first rd picks for next year

Acquired Noble and Rioli ( needed half-back flankers)

Banked enough points for a top 10 academy player in this draft
This

Richmond the obvious big winner despite the fact that they are in for years of pain they had no choice and got significant overs for departing players. 14 for Baker simply astounding.
West Coast could have gotten a lot more in the door so to me the biggest losers. They are not much further than Richmond in terms of rebuild but look at the difference in draft hands next 2 years, especially when Richmond live trade out their later first round early second round picks for futures.

Tigers traded out four of their most reliable, durable and best players. Three of their top 5 in their B&F are going to be playing against them next year. To expect they'll only be marginally worse in the short-term is very optimistic.
I understand what you are saying, but they finished wooden spooners and won two games.
Difficult times have already hit and those players were actively looking to greener pastures.
Rioli will be 28 next year, Baker 27. They have the majority of their careers in the rear view mirror. Bolton is great when he's switched on and in a good side, he's not putting a side on his back and giving grunt any time soon.
If it ends up a year-long stretch of belting after belting, that can leave a big mark, but it doesn't have to be that way and the point remains:
That was their starting configuration, and they traded incredibly well against that backdrop, plus it is apparently a year with a deep first round. Or they can stagger it.
It is obviously not ideal and you have to feel for Yze a bit, whether he will still be around when the rewards are reaped is iffy.

Shout-out to Hawthorn and Adelaide, too, fwiw.
Adelaide got in some handy players who are ready to go for a pretty modest outlay. Flew under my radar at least.
Hawthorn targeted some defensive help and got two blokes who are ready to go.

How many years now without a first round pick not sure your a winner Fly banking on this group to go for it again.
The trades will look OK if we win next year's premiership. Houston is a good pick up but our lack of young talls forward and back is a worry that the club has not seemed to keen on addressing. It's going to be a very boring draft for Collingwood supporters but an exciting one for the clubs with multiple picks in the top 30.

Micky son is not rd 1 selection mate shows promise.
The Collingwood faithful will howl you down on that particularly that our trading was conducting with not needing next year's first uppermost in mind. If he is not round one then we have made a mistake throwing away yet another first round pick.

Draper absolutely ticks all the boxes for the Blues 😎
And he would arrive with the twins which would be great in helping him settle in.
We do like dealing with young Reid though, maybe he might like to make us an offer to swap picks 3&4 … 😎

I see what Hawthorn are doing as fairly risky. No good draft picks this year. Relying on Carlton failing next year. Trading out good picks for a 29yo with injury history. With a few injuries and a tougher draw they could easily finish bottom 4 again imo.
Oh yeah… What else is new?

Every single year since 2016, the brain scientists on Big Footy have been saying “the Hawks will finish in the bottom 4 next year”

Interesting to note we’ve finished in the bottom 4 only twice in the past decade

2020: 5 wins, 12 losses

The Covid season when the AFL absolutely stitched us up with the WORST fixture EVER (constantly playing teams who had 5 or 6 more days of rest than us)

Forced to pull up stumps and enter a new ‘hub’ every 3 weeks (unlike poor Richmond who set up in their 5-star training camp 100m from Metricon for the entire season)

When Clarko complained about it, he was told by everyone in the AFL media to STFU and stop being a whinger 🤣

We were 3 wins, 1 loss before Gill re-did the made-for-TV fixtures with hubs and all that…

2023: finished 16th with 7 wins, 16 losses

Sam Mitchell basically expedited the rebuild by trading Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara (fast-tracking the development of guys like Day, Newcombe, Worpel, Ward, Mackenzie, etc)

He didn’t worry too much about defensive structures, but encouraged every player to attack with full speed through the middle “corridor” of the ground.

This provided some exciting high-scoring games. Naturally, we got burned whenever we (inevitably) turned the ball over. We copped a number of beltings as a result. But progress was made…

Things were corrected for the 2024 season. Tightened up, I mean… Our defensive setups were so successful, Champion Data rated the Hawks as the number 1 defensive team despite our lack of quality key defenders.

This trade period had been a pretty good one for the Hawks - we’ve improved our list for 2025 by adding a pair of good defenders.

Sam Frost getting injured and not playing in our Semi Final loss to Port proved to be very costly. We now have multiple options down back.

We’ll also be able to free up Sicily and Weddle to play more attacking roles. What a luxury that will be!!!!

Not sure what games you were watching mate, but the Hawks were putting opposition teams to sword by the end of the season. We also pantsed the highly-vaunted Bulldogs in our MCG Elimination Final

It’s easy to say “Hawks could easily finish bottom four”… except you have the same credibility as saying “Geelong could easily finish bottom four”… it makes zero sense.

We didn’t finish in the Top 8 because we had an “easy draw”…. Except for the top 3 teams, the Hawks beat every other team they came up against.

How many wins do the Hawks need before oppo fans concede it was no fluke?

I also doubt any kids from the 2024 draft are going to have much of a say in who makes the top 8 in 2025. Harley Reid was probably the most AFL-ready young gun ever and he didn’t exactly make a huge difference to West Coast’s W/L column. Hawks trading out of the 2024 draft might have some negative long-term effects, but you won’t see it next year…

Collingwood-yes they got Houston cheaper than he was worth but I really don't think he's a need for them and their tall stocks are poor. I can see them missing finals and no r1 again.
Ball movement from defence this year was literally our biggest issue and you think Houston isn’t a need for us?

Ok then lol

Do they have another academy kid next year?

Not that there were a heap of KPF options on the market but we didn't even hear any BS rumours about them asking haha Could have done something with Dev Robertson & Future picks?

Again though, they just won the flag and they have a quick fix in mind so power to them. Just thought we would hear something along the way.

Daniel Annable.

Captained the winning team in the AFL Futures (U17) GF curtain raiser, and had 27 disposals, 5 marks and 5 inside 50s. Potential top 5-10 pick.

Given the new points system next year, we needed to keep our first round pick.
