This is a touchy issue becuase of obivous reason.
not being religious myself i like to be opened mined towards other relgions but not having a game on every holiday for every religion gets a bit too much, even if it is one day per religion.

The way i see it a certain % of us believe in this sort fo stuff where as we are all australians and this makes anzac day relivant to ALL of us. Good friday football should of come about before the anzac game.

having said that I am not opposed to there ebing a game on that day, just saying to me anzac day is of more significance than good friday.

Also im a baker so it would be good to break up the crap i have to go through EVERY damn easter!

efa. Pretty sure the other two Abrahimic religions don't believe in the original sin. You're an educated man and hopefully you can see the merit in believing in a higher being after looking at the origin of the universe and coming to a 'logical' conclusion that differs only in interpretation that "everything created has a creator, but there must be an origin of it all" + "something can't come from nothing"

Change it to Abrahamic and I'll give it my rabbinic stamp of approval.

Absolutely shameless zee!

...I like it.

i really think you're trolling now. but it's always fun to argue religion. especially when arguing with trolls =P

That maybe Harker, but faith is something we need, more people should read the Bible instead listening to and watching the crap on TV and in the media. Satan is the father of lies, and the media and our current society is the perfect tool for him.

You may need faith.

I Don't. I don't feel the need for faith...

I believe in the right to believe whatever the **** you want.

I have no problem with you believing in anything. you can believe in a giant spaghetti monster for all i care. But i don't force people into having my beliefs and i don't want others to try and force me to have their beliefs

But I am not forcing anyone into believing anything, these are just my thoughts and opinions, and no I am not trolling. Religion always gets a good debate going and this is just that a debate, I think people are too scared these days to say they believe in God etc, because they feel that if they do say something they will get shouted down and hammered from pillar to post.

Yes but "we" have also been dictated to by those who see no point to religion, so "we" need to make a stand, is it ok for "us" to be dictated to by those of "you" who are anti-religion?

But only as long as it won't interfere with the anti-religious front from enjoying themselves of the holiest of holy days?

Sorry I need clarification.

I think you are not you, you are us, he is you, but he is not us, we are us...am I me?

holiest of holy days

FOR YOU.

To me. it's a good friday becuase it's a day off.

Do the muslims feel the need to disrupt everyone when they have ramadan?. or any of their other holy days? no. Christians have some crazy idea that they are the focus of the world and that their beliefs should govern the world. But no. you are no better than any other religion. and don't ahve any more right to disrupt the working day than ramadans or pastafarians

Good Friday is only considered the holiest day because Australia fundamentally and overwhelmingly a Christian-Judeo society. Yes, there are other religions practiced in Australia now but we are still essentially a Christian-Judeo society. Its why we used to sing God save the Queen, its why we still swear on the bible in court and its why we get a public holiday on Christmas Day and yes at Easter. I dont think any Christians are forcing their beliefs on anyone else. They are just asking that you respect the religious/cultural system that is the basis of our society by not playing a game of football on that one day. One day. Surely that is not an unreasonable request?

FWIW we USED to have God save the Queen and we can actually swear on anything in court it doesnt have to be a bible.

Buuuut anyway, as I've said earlier the community is divided I just hope we can come to a compromise. Holding an event day based on giving money to a charilty for sick children is probably one of the most 'Christian' things we could do.

I agree with you. Many people who claim to be Christians do not practice as Christians as the bible instructs them. But i'm sure most of those who claim to be Christians have an underlying belief in Jesus which is the most fundamental part of Christianity. I also believe that most of those who claim to be Christians respect the day as holy. In any event, the thrust of my argument is that it is one sacred day that Christians, however you define them, ask that you respect their beliefs and simply forego a game of football. One day, thats all. Surely that is not too much to ask?

I know what you're saying rhys but as others have mentioned there are so many religions in this country why don't we have holidays for their religions also? We aren't a mainly Christian country anymore and I do respect people's beliefs but it's not everyones, and therefore shouldn't speak on behalf of everyone else.

It actually is a lot to ask when this is not my faith, Christians can surely still celebrate their faith whether there's a game of football going on. As can Buddhists, athiests, scientologists etc etc etc

Mmmmm ... "overwhelmingly" ... and yet the percentage dropped by about 15% in the 15 years from 1991 to 2006. From about 77% to about 62%.

Religion in Australia

62% is hardly overwhelming and at that rate of decline, they'll be in the minority by 2020 (would already be down to about 58%). If you are generous and say that about 1/2 of that 62% are devout, then 31% of Australians are controlling the Good Friday habits of 69% of Australians ... hardly democratic don't ya think?

I do believe that our society was also based on the Westminster system and last time I checked, it was a democratic system.
