Peru are definitely more talented and under Ricardo Gareca they've been a well-organised side.

They deserved to be favourites and squeaking by them was a very good effort, especially because Gallese is a good penalty stopper.

It's completely insane, 16 groups of 3 teams, then knockout matches starting with a round of 32.
If you don't survive the group stage, you only play 2 games in a World Cup.

The other two teams went through a coaching roulette and both were dumb enough to hire Reinaldo Rueda, who hasn't accomplished anything for years and whom Ecuadorian fans criticised for being tactically inept a decade ago. Ecuador really only made the world cup under him because they got to play many of their games in Quito (higher ground), plus Antonio Valencia/Christian Noboa were still around. The former was a talisman; the latter was a decent captain. Plus they had some capable wingers (Enner Valencia came into his own then) and a moderately capable defence.

Peru on the other hand kept their coach since he helped them qualify for their first WC in 35 years. Said coach knew how to organise the side as a result.

TLDR; Tactics > talent.
