Worse Loss I can remember

If that is the worse loss that you can remember you haven't been watching Freo for very long!

I thought that we had a whole year of last quarter fade outs a few years ago? That year is the year that makes every Freo supporter question every game when we are ahead until the final siren.

When was the last time we absolutely flogged a team?

Collingwood 2005?

Being totally honest, you could almost see this loss coming. Fremantle don't play 4 quarters of football, let alone possess the ability to ensure a win with a 5 goal lead. The Hawks were bound to click in to gear eventually and our guys just stood back and spectated. In that regard, this loss probably wouldn't even make our top 10. We're all angry, yes, but that anger is moderated by the fact that seasoned supporters have grown accustomed to it.

In hindsight, I could imagine if we were a further 2 goals up at 3 qtr time (30 pts). We still would have crumbled and i'd be a lot more frustrated than I am right now. Agree with Leeloo, if this is the worst loss you can remember, you must be a supporter of all of 4 weeks old.

Goodresponses PBG. I've just sat and watched the game right through (only caught bits and pieces of it live), and there is no way that is up there with our worst (the Melbourne debacle is miles in front in that race). It was bad, but not that bad. It was disappointing, demoralising, frustrating etc. etc. - but we've had worse I'm afraid.

More the point, there's a good deal that we can take away from that game in a positive sense - there's been plenty of games where it was just a write-off.

No, actually we've handed out a couple of floggings since then - Norfs last year at Subi and Port this year in SA stand out as fairly solid floggings...

We got smashed from the clearances in the 4th, smashed.

Skill errors resulted in rebounded goals.

Very disappointing.

How did people see Griffin/Clarke today?

I thought Griffin was very solid.

Clarke was promising, to be honest I would look at moving Clarke forward and Pav back next week.

I think Pav in the backline isnt the greatest move, in the last few weeks he is having great trouble picking the ball up from below his knees and i may be wrong but his disposal hasnt been great - these two points to me suggest that it wouldnt be a great move.

I dunno i really thought it wasnt that bad. If it was at subi you would have won. disappointing maybe but not bad.

That's the thing, people around here are confusing disappointing (emotionally) with genuinely bad (poorly executed/played). It was certainly emotionally depressing, but we actually played a half decent game for a good part of it.

I thought Griffin was very good. Better than last week and I hope it continues, though one of his issues when at Adelaide was his lack of consistency. He's more mobile than I remember him.

Clarke showed some very good signs today - he's got the raw goods there, but still a bit away from holding his own. Still needs to get that marking going, and his few field kicks were suspect to say the least, but he's athletic and good in the clinches. I think the way Harvey used him would be great for his development, but I reckon we had better options (eg. Palmer) the way he was used today.

Im pleased with Griffin after today. Bar Mcpharlin the majority of the squad had a shocker against the Saints, but for Griffin, second game at the club and playing away from home and correct me If im wrong but over the last couple of years he hasnt played many games? the signs he showed were good, even if he was up against a weak hawthorn ruck duo.

In fact, if you rank it with other games we've previously played at the MCG, it probably ranks as one of our better games there...

That's perhaps the most depressing fact I've read in this thread.

I haven't been able to watch a great deal of Freo this season due to a new job, higher involvement in footy and cricket clubs but I got to watch the first 3 quarters of this game. I thought even then that we wasted an unbelievable amount of chances to put the Hawks away. The worst thing is that when I left at 3 quarter time I just knew "we aren't going to win this". I don't know why, I guess it's a rather pessimistic 6th sense I have about us these days after seeing it for years, you can learn to read the tell-tale signs. That's why I wasn't suprised to see the pocket news updates of Hawthorn coming back and overrunning us.

I wouldn't be so upset about this loss as we did have bugger all blokes to choose from, the most important player to any side in the afl out and a horrible record at the MCG. Yet I find myself very much saddened by this loss despite all the positives we could take out of it. I guess for me it's more about the fact that despite having the worst record and the worst injuries, today displayed more than ever that we are completely devoid of that intangible quality that wins flags: That spine to come back away from home, that killer instinct to keep going to make up for any mistake we make or to create another opportunity when we fail to take one. We lack this and that's why I'm more downcast after this loss because it makes it harder to believe that when the time comes for finals and the time comes to have a crack at the Grand Final that we can overcome the obstacles required for glory.

That's just my take. A lot of positives to take from this game like the fact that we can be better than top 4 sides away from home...but that's not the biggest thing I'll remember this game for :(

BUMP:

This is definately a bad loss without a doubt but I had a go at trying to rank the top 10 capitulations in Freo's history. I defined a capitulation as similar to what happened on Sunday (i.e. winning position only to throw it away)

It was a tough exercise and unfortunately turned into an essay length article as I attempted to provide a small background on the game and what subsequently followed

There were many games I could've put in but that list is what I came up with once I used process of elimination

Here's my top 10 Freo capitulations in history to date at the link below
If this is your material, you can post the whole article with a link at the bottom. Otherwise, we've been asked to treat it like spam.

This one was worse than the Hawks loss that started off this thread, but it still isn't close to our worst loss ever. I'd even argue it isn't our worst loss this year - I reckon the losses against the Saints and Richmond were worse, given the sides we had out there for those games.
