Did Aish deserve to be all Australian or was he picked because of previous good performances, I saw him against vic country I thought he was okay. Is AA picked solely on performances at nat champs

Bit of an update in the OP. Not 100% finished, but I didn't see the point in holding onto it.

I think he deserved it. He didn't get as many disposals as some other midfielders, but you could easily argue that he had the greatest impact of any midfielder. And you'd take 15 Aish disposals over 30 from a lot of the others who played.

Just a few thoughts . South Aussie kids were super impressive for mine.
Chris, your thoughts on Luke Reynolds ? Reminded me so much of Lucas it wasn't funny.

My thoughts are largely in the OP. And obviously I rate him quite highly, what with him being South Australian and all. :p

He is another one of those medium forwards, who I don't see his height as being a major weakness. It's all well and good to say that defenders are getting taller, but what happens when the ball comes in low or hits the ground? There will always be a spot for those third tall forwards. And just don't play them as your #1 key forward, it's not rocket science. Play them to their strengths. And for Reynolds, that's to get him up around the 50-60m mark, and let him use his foot skills to deliver it forward or kick long goals.

Read your OP again. Sensational draft for Freo nailing our requirements beautifully, including 1 more Pearce.

I was a little generous with Fremantle - good chance neither McCarthy or Battersby are available when I have them going. Considering what Battersby has shown in the SANFL and now in the Championships, he'd be one of the more underrated players in the draft. If you ever want to see who I really rate, just look at who I have going to Fremantle. :D

And of course we needed another Pearce.

I was going to ask the exact same thing seems to be living off pre champs reputation because he wasn't anywhere near the hype he was talked up prior to it in the games i saw.

This is not to say the hype is unjustified just I expected more.

Dom Sheed smashed it imo.

Considering Aish didn't play a single game of football prior to the Championships this year, I'd say he exceeded expectations. At least he did better than I expected, I would have been happy with him just getting through the tournament.

13 touches in just a half of football in the first match, BOG in the second game against Queensland and in the final game many judged his 14 disposal game to be more influential than Dunstan's 22 touch performance. His only down game came against Vic Country, when he was well held by Billy Hartung.

would it be wrong to suggest that because the afl have invested so heavily in the ais lads they only have to show a little to be selected in aa side. Are the selectors the guys that travelled with them to Europe and helped with their development

Ah k didn't realise he had missed so much footy prior, puts it into perspective.

Absolutely love this, there is so much conflict of interest around the whole National champs. From the commentators describing the games, even down to the players themselves. The Vic metro v Vic country game was almost an embarrassment, the lack of intensity, players not giving the best option to give to their mates in worse positions.

We are just beginning to see some of the clubs ignore the hype on players and make their own decisions on players.

My prediction is the % of players being drafted who played Nat. Championships for the big 4 teams will reduoften the next few years as recruiters become even more accountable for decisions they make on players outside the round 1 picks.

I really think the selectors should be impartial,Kevin Sheehan and mick ablett seem to promote ais kids with too much consistency. It taints the selection process

Considering the AIS boys are supposed to be the best of the best, you'd expect (and hope) that they would be the best performed players throughout the Championships. I've got no issue with any of the All Australian selections.

As for the focus on the 'big names' you can hardly blame the commentators, or the guys in the match review videos. Most people are only interested in the early selections after all, and these guys have been following the AIS Academy all season. It's only natural to focus on what you know.

By the advanced stats from the champs there are some question marks but I only saw one game so hard for me to judge, if the ais are the best let them get to the top by merit of performance not publicity from people who seem to be serving two masters

Yes the AIS players have been considered the best at a place in time, and on the whole they continue to be. However we expect impartial and balance commentary from people not agenda driven politics. If an AIS player is struggling say so and more than that be complimentary of others who are doing well.

Guess we'll agree to disagree. I don't think the AIS boys have gotten any special treatment. Just the big names, getting spoken about after good performances. And, it's not like Isaiah Miller, Nicholas Bourke and Tom Cutler got talked up. They are AIS members too after all. While the AFL website gave plenty of attention to the likes of McCarthy, Marsh, Kennedy-Harris and Nankervis too.

But ultimately, does it really matter? It's not like recruiters would even watch the reviews or listen to the commentary. It's like saying teams will trade for someone because Brian Taylor likes them.

I wonder if recruiters have the commentary on or off.

Updated my draft with profiles for the West Australians, maybe the Division 2 teams next?

What are your thoughts of North Adelaide's Campbell Combe?

He had a ripper tournament for South Australia. Just a contested ball winning machine, continued on with his clearance winning work from the SANFL. Currently playing Reserves, wouldn't surprise me to see him make his league debut at some point this year. I would personally have James Battersby and Todd McKay ahead of him, but he should well and truly be in the draft picture - maybe more towards the rookie draft at this stage.

Talking of Tod McKay - where is he at? He showed good form at the champs, surely he deserves a chance at AFL.
