Round 4 action...

Glenelg 16.14 110 d Central Districts 10.10 70

Sam Davis - 17 touches, 4 marks, 6 inside 50s, 2 goals

Ryan Falkenberg - 15 touches, 9 marks, 3 goals
Cooper Dahms - 19 touches, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 1 goal
Harrison Elbrow - 23 touches, 6 marks, 6 inside 50s

- After an interrupted start to the year, Sam Davis is making up for lost time. I still have him just ahead in terms of best 22 selection. While Ryan Falkenberg showed his versatility in going forward.

South Adelaide 15.8 98 d Norwood 12.4 76

Nathan Kreuger - 13 touches, 3 marks, 4 clearances, 1 goal

Lochie Charlton - 20 touches, 7 marks, 4 inside 50s

*Luke Valente - 24 touches, 5 marks, 6 clearances, 2 goals

- South Adelaide had a good win, largely thanks to it's non Academy players.

Woodville West Torrens 10.12 72 d Sturt 9.9 63

Isaac Moller - 10 touches, 5 marks, 2 goals
Cooper Gaffney - 23 touches, 6 marks, 15 tackles, 1 goal

Callum Coleman-Jones - 23 touches, 7 marks, 28 hitouts
Jordan Houlahan - 9 touches, 3 marks, 9 tackles, 2 goals

- With Sturt having a bye, Callum Coleman-Jones dropped back a grade and had a good day in the ruck. The WWT smalls continuing winning ball at will, whereas Jordan Houlahan is struggling to get into double figures but is still having an impact.

West Adelaide 13.11 89 d North Adelaide 9.9 63

Are there any highly talented key forwards coming through?
There's zero quality key forwards around the country from SA and it's getting embarrassing.

Not really.

Callum Coleman-Jones has potential as a #2 forward/ruck, good stong contested mark and should dominate at the Championships. Otherwise, SA have a lot of KPPs who are better defenders but can swing forward - Thomas Schmusch, Ryan Falkenberg, Nathan Kreuger.

Thoughts on Mitch Mead? He's eligible for father son for Port

Might be better off waiting for his brother, can't say Mitch has been overly impressive these past four weeks.

The 2017 McDonald’s SA Under-18 Squad has been released ahead of this year’s AFL National Championships in June and July.

Featuring 46 players from all eight non-AFL aligned SANFL clubs, the McDonald’s SA U18 Squad will begin training on Monday May 15 ahead of lead-up matches against Tasmania U18 (May 20 at Football Park) and North Adelaide U18/Reserves (May 26 at Football Park).

Speaking on SANFL Radio, SANFL High Performance Manager Brenton Phillips said the overall profile of the list was significant in terms of size and versatility in comparison to previous seasons.

Five players boast experience at Macca’s League level, with Sturt’s Mitch Crowden and Glenelg’s Alex Martini featuring in all of their teams matches this season.

Star Bays utility Darcy Fogarty made his debut on Saturday while West’s Izak Rankine is a nominee for the Round 4 Powerade Star Search award after racking up four goals and 24 disposals against North.

Norwood’s Lachlan Pascoe, who has been playing in the Redlegs’ Reserves, played three Macca’s League matches in 2016.

All five Level 2 AFL Academy members have been chosen, including Fogarty, Jordan Houlahan, Callum Coleman-Jones (Sturt) and Thomas Schmusch and Andrew McPherson (Eagles).

As many as seven of SA’s Level 1 AFL Academy players have also been included to gain valuable experience for next year’s campaign, including Rankine, Connor Rozee (North), Jack Lukosius (Eagles), Luke Valente (Norwood), Hugo Munn (Sturt), Ruben Flinn (Glenelg) and Jackson Hately (Central).

Interestingly, the McDonald’s SA Under-18 Squad also has four father-son players including Pascoe (Andrew Pascoe), Jackson Edwards (Tyson Edwards), Jake Weidemann (Wayne Weidemann) and James Rowe (Stephen Rowe).

Not really any surprises in that squad. Only four players who weren't a part of the initial Academy squad from earlier in the year - Denham, Oborn, Petty and Ballard. The rest is as expected, with underage kids to feature heavily.

From the looks of it, they aren't sold on the KPPs yet. Probably still working out what the best mix is, with no real standout KPF there. They've got a lot of 190cm+ guys who can rotate through the midfield and at either end. Charlie Ballard is 195cm, 77kg and has averaged over 20 touches a game for Sturt in the U18s this year. He's a bit like Taylin Duman from last year as a tall outside runner. Him and Nathan Kreuger could be options to get some real height into the midfield rotations, along with Darcy Fogarty who should be in the starting midfield.

The ruck position certainly isn't settled. I imagine they'll want Callum Coleman-Jones to be a focal point at full forward, despite him also being the best ruck prospect. Ben Oborn at 198cm, 93kg is the best performed ruck in the U18 competition so far, along with underaged Ruben Flinn. While James Siviour, Harry Petty, Simon Furnell and Bryce Denham are all other options. They've yet to add any 19 year olds to the squad, my guess is they've applied for Jordan Sweet to return. He has dominated Reserves level and is easily the best ruck prospect, but the overage rule is typically for players who missed out on playing in the Championships in their draft year. The AFL want young ruckmen, so they could bend the rules and approve him.

Do u think Darcy Fogarty will be played predominately though the midfield at the Champs?

Do u think Darcy Fogarty will be played predominately though the midfield at the Champs?

I'd say about 75% midfield, could play forward or back depending on what's needed at certain times in a match. And Brenton Phillips has pretty much confirmed that.

He's SA's only chance at a #1 pick. So I expect they'll show him off as much as possible to make that happen.

do you think his ability to play in several spots will result in him being a utility sort at AFL level? say a Goddard type positional wise? Or do you think he'll become an elite big bodied midfielder?

Saw Rankine a few times live last year and he is hands down the most naturally talented footballer in that squad. Absolute class act, no surprises to see him chalk up that sort of game at league level. Wish I got to see that game...

Solid squad with Fogarty, CCJ, Pascoe, Crowden, Giro ones that I will be watching closely. Pascoe is the consumate modern rebounding defender with an extremely high kick to handball ratio. Solid lad as well. Rozee, Rankine & Lukosius the main 3 to watch from the underage kids.

More indepth thoughts on kids when I have some time

I probably see him somewhere between Jake Stringer and Christian Petracca, in that I'd be leaning towards him playing as a forward/midfielder. Like those two, he can play anywhere from full forward to lead up half forward or through the midfield. It all depends on the game situation. I'm not entirely sold on him being a full time midfielder at the top level.

There'd be few, if any, U18 players in the whole country that are more naturally talented than Izak Rankine. SA could easily field up to 6 underaged players, and probably be better off for it.

Up to Round 5 already. And with the Academy squad named, we can focus in on specific players now...

Woodville West Torrens 18.10 118 d Glenelg 7.4 46

Jake Weideman - 30 touches, 5 marks, 6 inside 50s, 1 goal
Cooper Gaffney - 29 touches, 8 tackles, 8 clearances, 5 rebound 50s
*Jack Lukosius - 15 touches, 7 marks, 9 hitouts, 4 goals
Thomas Schmusch - 16 touches, 4 marks, 5 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 1 goal

Brad McCarthy - 24 touches, 5 inside 50s
Jackson Edwards - 26 touches, 5 clearances, 1 goal
Liam Denton - 23 touches, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50s

Who knows how SA are going to line up in regards to their talls, but after some strong performances down back Lukosius and Schmusch both went forward to good effect. They could feature at both ends during the Championships. Adelaide fans meanwhile will be happy with the performance of Edwards in his return.

North Adelaide 8.13 61 drew with South Adelaide 8.13 61

*Conor Rozee - 21 touches, 7 marks, 8 tackles, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50s
Bryce Denham - 11 touches, 6 marks, 12 hitouts, 2 goals
Ben Oborn - 10 touches, 24 hitouts

Nathan Kreuger - 19 touches, 5 marks, 4 inside 50s, 2 behinds

Once again, Rozee was the standout through the midfield. While the talls put in solid performances and like with the KPPs from WWT, Krueger played more in the attacking half this week.

Norwood 14.11 95 d Central Districts 12.14 86

James Siviour - 26 touches, 7 marks, 32 hitouts, 1 goal
Isaac Hewson - 39 touches, 8 marks, 7 tackles, 7 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s
Jacob Coles - 25 touches, 6 marks, 4 clearances

Ryan Falkenberg - 15 touches, 8 marks, 5 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Massive game from Hewson who dropped back to the U18s from Reserves, well and truly the focal point in the midfield and put on a clinic. Probably more interesting going forward was the game from Siviour, he's in the mix to be the backup ruckman and a performance like that could well put him to the top of the list.

Sturt 12.17 89 d West Adelaide 9.6 60

Jordan Houlahan - 28 touches, 7 marks, 8 tackles, 6 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 1 goal

Josh Smithson - 23 touches, 9 marks, 6 tackles, 9 inside 50s, 1 goal

Last week I commented on how Houlahan has been quiet so far this year, well someone must be reading this. After a month of playing in the forward 50, he moved into the midfield and showed his obvious talent. Here's hoping for more of that.

Reserves

Stefan Giro - 27 touches, 10 marks, 6 clearances, 1 goal
Lachlan Pascoe - 31 touches, 7 marks, 7 rebound 50s

Both these guys should be playing league football for Norwood, they're a clear step above reserves level. Pascoe really is looking like a complete medium defender at the moment.

Can you tell me about houlahan Chris ? Potential as a mid? Kicking ? Ballwinning ?

Any other mids with a high ceiling ?

Houlahan certainly has a lot of potential, what he does with that over the rest of the season will be interesting. He had an interrupted start to the season with a shoulder injury, but should peak nicely come the Championships. He played one game in the U18s this year as a starting midfielder and dominated with about 30 touches, but otherwise has played largely inside the forward 50 and averages around the 8-10 touches in that role.

I see him a bit like Will Hayward from last year, being that half forward who can play deep forward or push up through the middle. I don't really see him becoming a genuine midfielder, I just don't think that's his game. But he's a strong mark and a nice kick, so let him run and get involved in the play. He's the type who can kick a couple of goals from just a handful of touches as a forward. Forward half is what I'm expecting at the Championships.

As for other 'mids with a high ceiling', the real top line ones are for next years draft in Connor Rozee and Izak Rankine. This year, SA have a lot of solid midfielders you'd expect to see drafted anywhere from pick 50 to the rookie draft - Weideman, Rowe, Crowden, Giro for example. Someone like a Charlie Ballard may interest clubs, otherwise it's really just Fogarty and then Hewson, Edwards and McPherson as a running defender.

Jackson Edwards - 19 touches, 5 clearances, 4 inside 50s

U18s
Jack Lukosius - 23 touches, 10 marks, 5 inside 50s, 4 goals, 2 behinds, 6 score assists
Thomas Schmusch - 21 touches, 10 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal
Ruben Flinn - 10 touches, 4 marks, 34 hitouts

Messenger Shield (school football)

This competition is three rounds in now. Without stats, some of the more prominent performers so far have been versatile talls Charlie Ballard, Lochie Charlton and Sam Davis. Hugo Barry has stood tall for Prince Alfred College as the focal point up forward, with captain Cole Gerloff winning the midfield battle.

Now that there's a specific South Australia thread on the U18 Championships board, I guess I can venture out into a more broad draft thread now.

And I'll have my top 25 posted a bit later on today. Couple of different players, with a new name for BigFooty featuring in the top 10.

My draft board for May...

1. Jaidyn Stephenson (189cm, 76kg from Eastern Ranges)
2. Luke Davis-Uniacke (187cm, 85kg from Dandenong Stingrays)
3. Darcy Fogarty (192cm, 88kg from Glenelg)
4. Jarrod Brander (195cm, 90kg from Bendigo Pioneers)
5. Lochie O'Brien (184cm, 75kg from Bendigo Pioneers)
6. Adam Cerra (186cm, 85kg from Eastern Ranges)
7. Sam Hayes (203cm, 93kg from Eastern Ranges)
8. Jack Petruccelle (184cm, 73kg from Northern Knights)
9. Cameron Rayner (187cm, 88kg from Western Jets)
10. Nicholas Shipley (190cm, 90kg from St George/GWS Academy)

It's going to take a lot to knock Stephenson off the #1 spot on my list. I just think he has the most natural talent of any player, and he's one of the few genuine match winners on offer this year. I'd have taken him ahead of Taranto last year and since he went at #2, there's only one spot to really have Stephenson. Otherwise, it's hard to go past Davis-Uniacke as the best performed midfielder on offer. And he has the size that clubs love too.

The one who hasn't been spoken of much is Nicholas Shipley, a product of the GWS Academy. But what I saw through Division 2 of the Championships was excellent. For someone still relatively new to the game, he's shown some quick improvement with plenty more to come. At 190cm, he's a ball winner through the midfield and has the added versatility and speed to play in the forward half. Unlike previous drafts, there aren't a lot of these big bodied midfielders. Still has some work to do on decision making, but his skills are improving. I'm betting on him performing well for the Allies and climbing the rankings in the coming months.

11. Joel Garner (183cm, 81kg from Eastern Ranges)
12. Andrew McPherson (186cm, 75kg from Woodville West Torrens)
13. Paddy Dow (184cm, 78kg from Bendigo Pioneers)
14. Charlie Spargo (175cm, 73kg from Murray Bushrangers)
15. Lachlan Pascoe (190cm, 89kg from Norwood)
16. Hunter Clark (186cm, 79kg from Dandenong Stingrays)
17. Noah Balta (194cm, 92kg from Calder Cannons)
18. Ryley Stoddart (183cm, 73kg from Eastern Ranges)
19. Jack Higgins (178cm, 76kg from Oakleigh Chargers)
20. Connor Ballenden (199cm, 96kg from UQLD/Brisbane Academy)

Maybe my SA bias is showing a little here, but I really value good ball users off half back and for me it's hard to go past McPherson and Pascoe. Pascoe in particular could play AFL football next year, but while I rate him highly I don't expect to see him go anywhere near this highly come the draft. And Stoddart is right up there with those two rebounding defenders too. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Higgins won the MVP at the Championships and even the Rising Star next year, but I consider his ceiling to be lower than others.

As for the talls, Balta has shown some good signs around the ground and athletically for the Cannons but I wish they wouldn't play him in the ruck. I don't think it helps his development or draft stock. While I think Ballenden is one of the better KPPs in the draft, but talked up a little too much based on the Academy bias that always exists. Hopefully he performs more consistently in Division 1 of the Championships.

21. Jack Powell (181cm, 81kg from Ainslie/GWS Academy)
22. Jake Patmore (182cm, 79kg from Claremont)
23. Callum Coleman-Jones (199cm, 98kg from Sturt)
24. James Worpel (185cm, 84kg from Geelong Falcons)
25. Thomas Schmusch (192cm, 78kg from Woodville West Torrens)

Just a couple of players I like here, probably more so than others in Patmore and Schmusch. Patmore has had a good start to the Colts year, winning more ball than he has previously so hopefully he can handle the step up over the coming months. While I'm hoping Schmusch can settle in the back half for SA, as I think he's the best KPD - despite his ability up forward.

As for Powell, I'm not sure the Giants end up matching whatever bid comes. He's a very good midfielder, but doesn't necessarily offer a huge point of difference. Which given how deep the GWS list is, is what they'd be looking at now. He is from Canberra though, and I suspect that will work in his favour. There's a chance a bid wont come until the second round though, which would make it a bargain for the Giants.

Thanks Chris25 , great stuff. I'm a big fan of Stephenson, interesting you have him at number 1. I think you are the first PD to have him there.

I've turned into a real draft/trade nerd over the last few years, of late its been about all we Lions supporters have to look forward to. We are highly likely to have pick 1 this year, Chris Fagan has said we need midfielders and small forwards who exert extreme pressure. A few questions on Stephenson-

1) Can you compare him to any past or present player?
2) Do you see him as a forward who can do stints in the middle or is he a player that could transition to a full time midfielder?
3) Strengths and weaknesses?

Thanks for your insight Chris it's much appreciated .
Can you please give me your thoughts on Darcy Fogarty and Jarrod Brander either are my dream selection for the Baggers.

Who did you rate number one last year?

Really interested what your long term projection for Stephenson is?

From a Brisbane perspective, if Schache stays I'm very keen on Luke Davis-Uniacke (even though there is a genuine perceived flight risk with LDU). If Schache goes, I'd lean towards Darcy Fogarty.

Other players I have a keen interest in are Lochie O'Brien, Jack Higgins and James Worpel. Also very interested to follow Jack Petruccelle, to see if he has some genuine x factor about him other than pure speed.
